Google+ Beta Brings Open Signups And Updated Android App With Tons Of New Features

Just as some were speculating that Google's invite-only signup system for their latest social networking venture would be its eventual downfall, the Google Mobile blog announced that Google+ is transitioning into beta, bringing open signups with it.

That isn't the only change Google has cooked up, though. Google+ has been updated with a host of new features in an effort by Google to show how fast they can implement users' "most requested features."

Perhaps the most exciting change to Google+ is the addition of Hangouts to the mobile app with the v1.07 update.

TouchPad Update: Now With Working Wi-Fi, Sound, Accelerometer, 3D Games, And Video Acceleration

The HP TouchPad Android port has been a fascinating journey to follow. Last we spoke of the device, Team CM showed off multitouch and GPU acceleration; and, since then, great strides have been made in the way of the port. Basically everything works as it should now, including Wi-Fi, sound, the accelerometer, 3D games, and video acceleration.

While everything appears to be running smoothly, Team CM reminds us that this is still a closed alpha build and it's not quite ready for the masses, as "things still aren't as reliable as [they'd] like."

For more information on the status of the project, check out this thread over at RootzWiki.

[Update x2: It Was Fun While It Lasted] Is The Amazon Appstore Officially Rolling Out Globally?

Update 2: Just like we expected, Amazon has pulled the plug on the Appstore's international availability. No reason was given, but we already knew that the global launch was unintentional in the first place, so it makes sense.

Of all the gripes surrounding the Amazon Appstore, its lack of international availability has been among the top since its release back in March of this year. However, we're starting to hear that Big A may have quietly unleashed its third-party Android market to several countries outside of the US.

HTC Rhyme Shows Up Just In Time, Has All The Ladies Standing In Line

For all the Android-lovin' ladies in the house, HTC has just announced the Rhyme for Verizon: a mid-range device coated in a metallic plum (read: purple) finish with matching accessories. Previously rumored as the Bliss, the Rhyme was designed with the woman in mind (see what I did there?), complete with "charm indicator" -- an accessory that will glow purple when the phone is ringing, so you never miss another call because you didn't hear your phone beneath...

Zynga's Hanging With Friends Now Available In The Android Market

Zynga, creators of the ever-popular Words With Friends, have just made Hanging With Friends available to Android users in the U.S. following its global release. The game is Zynga's twist on the children's game Hang Man, but it is not as gruesome as it sounds. The game features "cute characters in perilous situations," by which I mean adorable, doe-eyed cartoons hanging on to balloons suspended in mid-air over a pool of lava.

Verizon Wireless To Begin 'Network Optimization' In September, Will Slow Data Speeds For Top 5% Of Users In 'Congested Areas' After 2GB

Ah, the data saga continues. Throttling has been a long-time practice of T-Mobile, which drastically slows data speeds for users who go over their set-amount of high-speed access. AT&T recently announced a similar practice, slowing the top 5% of users who were grandfathered in on unlimited data plans.

Verizon also made a drastic change to its smartphone data packages recently, switching from an unlimited-only offering to a tiered setup. Now, even furthering the changes to its data structuring, Big Red will begin implementing "network optimizations" to all existing customers with unlimited plans on 3G devices in September.

Pricing And Specs Revealed For Meizu MX: First Quad-Core Android Phone

That glut of quad-core awesomeness that Nvidia claimed was to begin this August didn't exactly happen. While this is a disappointment, it is clear that the second doubling of cores is on the not-so-distant horizon.

Today, Chinese manufacturer Meizu announced the pricing and specs of its newest handset: the MX. The Meizu MX comes in two flavors, the 16GB dual-core variety and the 32GB model with a quad-core processor. Both devices sport 4.3" qHD displays and A9 CPUs, but they do vary in price.
