Razer already has kernel source and factory images available for the Razer Phone Oreo update

The Razer Phone is one of the few devices that caters to developers and enthusiasts with an unlockable bootloader, factory images, and so on. It was stuck on Nougat until recently, though. Razer just started pushing the Oreo 8.1 update, but you don't have to wait on the OTA. There are already factory images available for download, and the kernel source is out.

Xiaomi promises to change its ways and release kernel source code within 3 months of device launches

Chinese OEM Xiaomi has a poor reputation when it comes to OS updates and the timely release of kernel source code. It took a Twitter backlash and criticism from several tech blogs to get the company to finally release the Nougat source code for the Android One-toting Mi A1. A similarly lengthy wait had to be endured before the Oreo code was provided last month. Xiaomi has now stated its intention (again) to release kernel source code within three months of a device's launch.

Inevitably, some get it spectacularly wrong, and in the Android community this year that unwanted accolade goes to LineageOS. The team behind it has now issued an apology.

In a follow up to its original and harmless announcement of the legitimate cryptocurrency LOSCoin, LineageOS released an update that featured a persistent notification and a warning.

After much anticipation, LineageOS 15.1 (based on Android 8.1) was announced last month. Only a handful of devices had official 15.1 builds at the start, but over time, more have been moved up to Oreo. The Nexus Player, OnePlus One, and Oppo Find 7 were recently added to the roster - and now three more devices are coming.

Motorola releases Android 8.0 Oreo kernel source code for 2016 Moto Z

Motorola hasn't been doing well lately. Several planned phones have seemingly been delayed or cancelled, and half of the company's engineering team in Chicago was laid off earlier this month. While Oreo has yet to be released for the company's 2016 flagship (at least beyond carrier testing), developers can now download the updated kernel source code.

LineageOS 15.1 Oreo arrives on the Nexus Player, two more devices get 14.1

After three years of official support, Google confirmed yesterday that the long-lived Nexus Player would no longer receive Android updates. While Android Oreo will continue to serve most users just fine, the custom ROM community will likely keep it updated for years to come. LineageOS already supported the set-top box with Nougat builds, but now it has been updated to Android 8.1 Oreo.
