[Update: OTA Link] Android 5.1 OTA Update Now Rolling Out To The LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition

Before you ask, yes, this article is basically just another excuse for me to use Android Police's favorite device abbreviation, LGGP83GPE. (That's the short-lived Google Play Edition of the LG G Pad 8.3, from way back in 2013.) According to at least one Twitter user and, hey, my own tablet, the LGGP83GPE is getting its Android 5.1 update right about now. If you're running stock software, head to the usual spot (Settings>About tablet>System updates) to check for yours.

Play Store 5.4 Makes The Notification Bar Transparent On App Pages [APK Download]

Play Store 5.4 Makes The Notification Bar Transparent On App Pages [APK Download]

The Play Store is where you go to watch your other apps get updated, but occasionally it's nice to sit back and watch as the store gets its own renovation. Sometimes the changes are stark. Other times, there are just a few new lights here or there.

What's New?

In version 5.4, it's not about what's been added, but what's been taken away. The notification bar has lost its color. Now Play Store pages appear with banner images that reach towards the top of the screen.

Google Reader Rises From The Grave With New (Material) Update v2.0 [APK Download]

Google Reader Rises From The Grave With New (Material) Update v2.0 [APK Download]

For any readers visiting this post on or after April 2, check the post date before continuing :)

In 2013, Google announced the death of its RSS reading platform Google Reader. At the time, Google cited declining usage as the official reason for Reader's closure, wrapping it up along with things like Cloud Connect, Voice for Blackberry, and Building Maker as part of a second round of "spring cleaning."

It comes as a huge surprise then to see the app back in the Play Store almost two years later with a new icon and brand new interface, jumping from version 1.1.8 up to 2.0.

News & Weather v2.3 Brings Important News Notifications, Personalized Suggested Reading, And A Settings Screen [APK Download]

News & Weather v2.3 Brings Important News Notifications, Personalized Suggested Reading, And A Settings Screen [APK Download]

The News & Weather app is a bit of a dark horse among Google's lineup. It's also not as talked about as Google+, or as vital as Gmail; and it doesn't fit in with the Play-branded apps like Newsstand, which it is effectively a direct competitor to. For many people, News & Weather is just another widget that came pre-installed on a Nexus device, at least until it was made available on the Play Store, in late August. Since then, a few really big updates have drastically improved the once stale app. This trend continues as a bump to v2.3 adds notifications for important stories, an easier interface to configure the weather card, and a 'Suggested For You' section that allows users to fine-tune their topics of interest.

[Update: Changelog Posted] Maps 9.6 Update Gives Users More Control Over Voice Output And Dresses Up Zagat Reviews [APK Download]

Update Wednesday has come and gone, but most of what we've seen can be described as bug fixes and relatively minor adjustments – not that we aren't happy with improvements of any kind. Google just set loose Maps 9.6, and like most of the other apps, the changes are mostly about fine-tuning. This version slightly improves the visibility of Zagat reviews and adds an option to determine if the voice should play over speakers or Bluetooth during turn-by-navigation.

Google Play Music v5.8.1836R Adds YouTube Music Videos In Search Results [APK Download]

Play Music's v5.8 rolled out last month with a slew of fixes and improvements to make the app fit better with Material Design's guidelines and provide some added functionality like biography and history for artists, and a previous song button in the collapsed notification. The app has since seen a few incremental changes, but the latest v5.8.1836R got a rare treatment from Google: an official changelog. So it must be something important, right?

Well, yes and no. If you don't subscribe to Google Play Music All Access (or Unlimited as it's being referred to recently), you may not notice any significant difference in the app.

Google Releases Quickoffice Update To Finally Push Users To Install Docs, Sheets, And Slides [APK Download]

Google Releases Quickoffice Update To Finally Push Users To Install Docs, Sheets, And Slides [APK Download]

Google has a well-earned reputation for funding multiple redundant and competing products, then unceremoniously eviscerating the ones that don't quite fit the company's vision. <cough>messaging clients, Currents, and that other one</cough>. Now, it looks like the selection of document editors is also about to undergo such a diet. Google is finally getting ready to pull the plug on Quickoffice. An update to the app now warns users that support has ended, and that it has been replaced by Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Last summer, Google announced that development on Quickoffice had come to an end because all of its pertinent features had been integrated into the suite of Drive apps.
