While we enjoyed Diablo Immortal's hack-and-slash action, its aggressive monetization strategy leaves much to be desired. It's hard to enjoy the game without it bombarding you with countless reminders of in-game purchases, so if you've reached your breaking point, we recommend exploring some of our favorite alternative ARPGs on the Play Store.

These ARPGs focus on top-down hack-and-slash gameplay, and we've picked a variety to suit everyone. While we recommend an Android controller for the best experience, they can all be enjoyed with your device's touch screen. If you'd prefer a game with a more narrative bent, try one of the best RPGs on Android instead.

1 Eternium

Eternium's Play Store listing describes it as "a tribute to classic RPGs." Anyone familiar with the original Diablo will notice that while Eternium doesn't overflow with originality, it's clearly made by people with experience of what made the classics great. If you wish Diablo Immortal stuck closer to its roots, it's the perfect choice.

Eternium has microtransactions, but the game can be played offline, so you enjoy it without interacting with other players. These microtransactions aren't intrusive; Eternium won't bombard you with notifications and pop-ups.

2 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance

This classic ARPG dungeon crawler has been ported to numerous platforms since its original release in 2001. While its retro hack-and-slash gameplay may feel clunky to those familiar with modern games, this spin-off of the Baldur's Gate franchise is a unique ARPG that can't be missed. Like the other games in the Baldur's Gate franchise, Dark Alliance is set in Dungeon & Dragon's Forgotten Realms setting. It doesn't suffer from the switch to real-time combat, and you can even play local co-op.

There are no in-app purchases here. Dark Alliance is available for a one-time purchase of $9.99, which is a third of its price on other platforms. So if you want to get back to ARPG basic, and are willing to put up with quirky 2001 gameplay features, then Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is the first Diablo Immortal alternative you should play.

3 AnimA ARPG

AnimA provides the closest experience to Diablo Immortal out of any game on this list. It's challenging, but not in the same way as Pascal's Wager's Soulsborn-like mechanics. Instead, AnimA encourages you to explore all areas of the map and think carefully about how to defeat each boss. It's a game of strategy, exploration, and fast combat, precisely what a hack-and-slash ARPG should be.

There are in-app purchases available, but they won't give you a fast track to success, thanks to the game's balanced monetization. You can even grab a friend to join you in the trickiest dungeons or play through the entire game solo. AnimA is an excellent choice if you want the Diablo experience without the pay-to-win mechanics.

4 Titan Quest: Legendary Edition

Released in 2006, Titan Quest has been remastered for a new generation. In Titan Quest, you'll explore the ancient worlds of Greece, Egypt, Babylon, and China. You'll fend off a wide variety of creatures from each culture's mythologies with various weapons and combat skills.

Titan Quest is a must-play for those who love ancient mythology. However, as it's a direct remaster of the 2006 release, you may find the gameplay and mechanics slightly clunky. At $19.99, it's also a little pricey, but it's easily worth the money since there's a variety of DLCs to expand the game, with no pay-to-win mechanics to be seen.

5 Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Crystal Chronicles is free to download, but a paywall blocks its gameplay beyond the first three dungeons, so it's initially just a free demo. If you'd like to unlock the full title, this will set you back $24.99. It's a fair price considering this isn't a cheap mobile RPG. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for Android is the same game you'll find on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and iOS. Cross-platform functionality is available across all platforms.

Essentially, this release is a remaster of the original game for GameCube. Crystal Chronicles is a fun hack-and-slash RPG that holds up remarkably well alongside modern competitors. So if you're a fan of the original, this is a worthwhile remaster. The dated mechanics might slightly put newcomers off, but there's a fun experience to unearth if you're willing to invest the time.

6 Pascal's Wager

Pascal's Wager doesn't offer the top-down camera of Diablo Immortal, but it's a must-play for people who want a genuinely challenging ARPG. It feels a little like Dark Souls, with a plethora of challenging bosses, a gritty world to explore, and a color palette inspired by the muted tones of dirt. The base game is $6.99, and there are optional DLCs available for purchase. None of the in-game purchases are pay-to-win, so victory is down to your skills alone.

Play Pascal's Wager if you want a challenging ARPG that will push you to your limits. Controls can sometimes be a little clunky, so we recommend playing this with an Android gaming controller for the best experience.

7 Almora Darkosen

Almora Darkosen is a carefully crafted retro RPG experience. Released in 2014, this game was designed to invoke nostalgic feelings of classic ARPGs. It's free to play with ads. However, you can remove the game's ads for $4.99. It's a purely single-player experience, so if you liked the multiplayer aspect of Diablo Immortal, give this a pass.

While its lack of multiplayer might be a problem for some, Almora Darkosen is worth a shot. Its retro animations are charming, and the fast-paced gameplay will have you hooked. It offers over 100 quests, an original story, and a variety of quirky mini-games and non-combat skills to relax with. It's worth a shot for anyone missing the days of Diablo 1 and its kin.

8 Sands of Salzaar

Despite suffering from the same bugs and mistranslations that plagued the PC version, Sands of Salzaar is still one of the best alternatives to Diablo Immortal. It's an ARPG that includes open-world mechanics reminiscent of the Mount and Blade series. You'll collect soldiers as you adventure around the world, engaging in real-time battles with hundreds of characters on screen.

Sands of Salzaar is a sandbox experience, so if you felt like Diablo Immortal was too restrictive, this might be the perfect game for you. It's got plenty of content to explore, but the narrative is lackluster so try one of the above games if a good story is the most crucial part of a game.

9 Undecember

Undecember's unique gameplay gives you complete control over your character customization; there are no class locks. This ties into the somewhat grindy gameplay, as you must spend countless hours playing to unlock every weapon and item. However, if you enjoy losing yourself in MMORPG, you'll get the same satisfaction from Undecember.

Undecember does have microtransactions, but these aren't egregious. They'll provide a handy way to streamline gameplay but don't make the experience pay-to-win. We recommend Undecember if you felt Diablo Immortal's gameplay was too restrictive.

10 Aether Gazer

Aether Gazer is an ARPG with gacha mechanics. This means microtransactions are a given, but these are easily ignored by those uninterested in spending money. Aether Gazer is also an excellent game for casual gamers; you'll find that the game doesn't overwhelm you with unnecessary information like most gacha games. But for those still on the fence, our beginner's guide will get you started.

Try out an alternative to Diablo Immortal

From niche indie RPGs to high-production value gacha games, we've included a wide variety of subgenres. We guarantee you'll find a worthy alternative to Diablo Immortal that treats your wallet as optional, not mandatory.

If you prefer the "action" part of ARPGs, try one of the best action games on Android.
