About Ryan Whitwam

Ryan is a tech/science writer, skeptic, lover of all things electronic, and Android fan. In his spare time he reads golden-age sci-fi and sleeps, but rarely at the same time. Commercials on Hulu getting on your nerves? Now there's a way to skip them, provided you're willing to pay a little more each month. Hulu has announced a commercial-free version of the service that will cost $11.99 per month rather than the usual $7.99.

It's been a long time since there's been a new Android Wear watch available for pre-order, but this is the big day for the much anticipated Huawei Watch. This device starts at $349 and will eventually go all the way up to $799, but the expensive gold versions aren't part of today's pre-order. You can get the other versions at Amazon, Best Buy, and more.

People are apparently interested in the Nextbit Robin smartphone with its cloud-centric features. The Kickstarter campaign has already hit the modest $500,000 goal, so the company is doing a $1 million stretch goal. If the campaign hits that, everyone gets a quick charger included with the phone.

Google's new branding is already starting to worm its way into all corners of the company's design. The web interface is already being updated with new icons based on the sans-serif G, and now app updates have started to show up. No need to wait for update Wednesday this time. So far we've got Maps and Translate.

It's new logo day at Google, and that means your favorite apps are getting a few icon tweaks. Several of Google's apps had the little 'g' somewhere, but that's no longer part of the logo. Now it's all about the big G, and Google is already updating icons on the web to reflect that.

We've been waiting for Motorola to announce a timeline for the new Moto X after previously deleting multiple mentions of a September 3rd date. We still don't have a final release date, but you'll be able to give Motorola your money tomorrow, September 2nd. That's when pre-orders go live in the US.

There's finally an official Pokémon game on a mobile device, and that's great. It's just... well, it's not the game that everyone really wants. Pokémon Shuffle is a matching puzzle game with hefty in-app purchases and a timer system. It was released in geo-restricted beta a week or two ago, but now it's live for everyone. Maybe if we give them enough money they'll release a proper Pokémon game?

Your phone and the services connected to it know a lot about you (creepy, right?), and Bento Launcher is designed to use that data in order to bring relevant information to your home screen. Bento is entering a new phase today, starting with a name change. It's called Scout Launcher, and it's now available to everyone.

Android 5.0 brought major changes to the platform, and that made it hard to get the Xposed system tweaking framework functional. The project's developer has finally announced that Xposed for Lollipop is ready after months of betas and unofficial builds. That doesn't mean it's completely without risks, but nothing should be obviously broken.

Look, you're going to have to deal with the TSA, baggage fees, and all sorts of other junk to hop a flight, so why not make paying for the ticket a little less painful at least? Hopper might be able to help. It came to iOS a few months ago, and now it's on Android. Just tell it when you're flying and to where, then Hopper figures out when you should buy.

GoPro owners can capture all sorts of daring stunts with their rugged action cams, but at the end of the day they still have to deal with an app that hasn't always been the best. Although, the official GoPro app is getting an update today that makes a few useful changes.

There's a new LTE tablet headed to AT&T, and it looks pretty familiar. The LG G Pad X 10.1 will launch via the carrier's online shop on September 4th and will appear in stores on September 11th. AT&T has been stingy with the specs, but this device looks like a tweaked version of the recently announced G Pad II 10.1.

OnePlus came out of nowhere last year with a phone that appealed to a lot of cynical smartphone-using curmudgeons. A device with great specs, capable software, and a reasonable price? What's the catch? Oh, invites. Well, the OnePlus One still managed to win a lot of fans, and now the company's followup, the OnePlus 2 is (sort of) available. This device also has an invite system, and the price is a little higher. Is it worth scrounging and begging to get an invite to buy this one, though? After all, they claim it's a "2016 flagship killer." Let's find out.

T-Mobile's bombastic CEO John Legere does not mince words. Following an impromptu Periscope broadcast on Sunday, he's published an open letter on the T-Mobile website that lays out his plan to go after those dirty, rotten data thieves. You know the ones—people who use their unlimited data lines to get unlimited tethering data, bypassing the 7GB cap. Legere seems deadly serious about this, and there's a full FAQ detailing what Tmo is doing about it.

Sony kind of announced the Z4 a few months ago, but now it's moving quickly toward a do-over with the Z5. There will actually be three phones called Z5, which could be announced in a few days at IFA. You don't have to wait, though. A video from the French site Clubic was leaked showing off the Z5 in moderate detail.

Do you have more money than sense, and also use Android phones? Then the $17,000 Apple Watch Edition isn't an option for you. You'll have to make do with the somewhat less insane (but still pretty ridiculous) LG Watch Urbane Luxe. It's a $1200 version of the Urbane with a nicer strap and 23k gold plated body.

Hollywood is bringing The Martian by Andy Weir to life on the big screen in a few months, but you can get the original novel for a pittance if you act quick. This book is usually $9.99 on Google Play, but it's on sale for $1.99 right now. Amazon has also lowered its price to match, as it tends to do.The Martian is a mostly first-person story of astronaut Mark Watney's attempts to survive on the Red Planet after being left behind on a mission. It's a fascinating tale that makes the hard sci-fi elements much more relatable. You don't have to be a huge space nerd to follow and enjoy the story, but if you are a space nerd, you'll find The Martian to be incredibly well-researched.The Martian starring Matt Damon opens on October 2nd, so you've got time to devour the novel before seeing the movie. I say this as someone who loves sci-fi and has written a sci-fi novel—The Martian is great. It's one of the best books I've read in recent memory. It's a no-brainer at $1.99.Source: Google Play Books, AmazonThanks: Cris Castillon

Are you ready for the weekend? Impossible, because you haven't splurged on discounted apps and games. Hey, what else are you going to use all that Google survey money on?

Regular charging is just so lame, right? Quick Charging is totally where it's at, but many phones that support Quick Charge 2.0 don't come with compatible chargers. Even when they do, you probably don't have spares for around the house or in the car. Well, now you can pick some up for cheap thanks to Newegg.

If you've been using Android for long enough, you might remember the days when the only swiping keyboard in existence was Swype, and you had to sign up for a weird private beta program to use it. Well, it's been in the Play Store for a few years now, and it's getting a big v2.0 update today. It's going where no man has gone before.
