Microsoft makes a lot of apps for multiple platforms. It also makes a lot of tools that are used by other developers to build apps for multiple platforms. It only makes sense then that the company would be interested in buying Xamarin, one of the leading platform providers for mobile app development.
The G5 has just been announced by LG in Barcelona prior to the start of Mobile World Congress. During the press conference, LG didn't clarify the price, availability countries, or dates of its new quirky modular flagship, but the details are starting to surface right now.
Read the title. Now read it again. Yes, itshappening.gif and you better be ready for it. The CheetahPhone is officially a thing.
OPPO might have just blown everyone's mind with its Super VOOC fast charging technology, but that doesn't mean that the company's MWC announcements are over. SmartSensor is its new Optical Image Stabilization technology and it happens to be the smallest, fastest, and most precise sensor available on smartphones right now.
Do you like Qualcomm's Quick Charge? Are you impatiently waiting for all devices and accessories to be compatible with Quick Charge 3.0? Then OPPO is about to rain on your parade with its Super VOOC technology. And I mean really rain.
Many of those who use Telegram swear by it. Not just because the messenger app is great, but because the developer keeps adding cool and innovative features, expanding to other platforms, and generally outclassing the competition in several areas. But what Telegram lacked so far are active users. It doesn't matter how awesome your messaging client is if no one you know is using it.
Are Microsoft Garage's resources infinite? I sure think so. The program keeps fostering and releasing new Android apps on the Play Store faster than Kairosoft can pump out simulation games. Sometimes, they're quirky apps that just want to make your mornings worse and other times they're interesting apps that grow to become useful projects like Next Lockscreen and Arrow Launcher. Today's new releases could be either: they're limited in scope but have what is needed to be very useful in their niche.
For more than a couple of years, WhatsApp has offered releases of its app on its own website at whatsapp.com/android. Often times, those were small incremental changes over the public version available on the Play Store, but sometimes they had awesome features that were being seeded out as a test, on a limited scale, to those who were willing to live on the bleeding edge. That's how we always got our first hands on whatever new thing WhatsApp was cooking behind the scenes, like voice calling, Material Design, new emojis, Google Drive backup, and more.
When it comes to podcast applications, we often talk about Pocket Casts and BeyondPod here on Android Police, but one of the unsung heroes of the category is Player FM. The free app has over 1M downloads on the Play Store, a web client, Google+ sign in, and a lot of cool features to keep podcast fans happy. It's usually my first recommendation as a free podcast client, especially for those who are new to the medium and want to see what it's all about.
Part of me can't help but wonder whether Cyanogen Inc. still lives under the shadow of its forefather, CyanogenMod, especially when announcements like these are made and the company introduces an eerily named "Cyanogen MOD" platform that has nothing to do with the custom ROM every enterprising Android user has known for years.
Out of this year's Mobile World Congress flagship announcements, the LG G5 has been one of the most leaked and just as equally intriguing. Now the smartphone has been officially unveiled at the company's press conference in Barcelona and it's not coming alone. Instead, the modular approach to the G5 has allowed LG to introduce a slew of extensions and accessories for the phone. There's a lot to go through, so let's get right to it.
Since the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and LG G5 have already been leaked to death by almost everyone on earth, Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, is turning his attention toward lesser known devices. He already showed us a family portrait of 6 color variants of the midrange HTC A16 and he's back with another press render, this time for a Sony Xperia device.
Unlike Samsung and LG, HTC doesn't seem to be ready to reveal its next flagship, the One (M10), at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. But the company's portfolio doesn't stop at the One lineup. There's the Desire range as well, and one of its impending models is codenamed A16 and pictured in the leaked photo above, courtesy of Evan Blass (@evleaks). There are six color variants including plain black and white, and starry / sparkly black, white, red, and navy. Or at least that's the way my eyes see it.
In January, Outlook's team announced a couple of additions to its app, including Skype call scheduling, improved views, and an option to change the first day of the week to Monday or Saturday. The first two features went live immediately after that in version 2.0.25, but the last one wasn't implemented until now.
Ever noticed how your Android Downloads folder easily gets cluttered with useless files and documents that you viewed once and never needed again? This is especially true of PDF files since Chrome can't open them natively and thus hands them over to other applications, the default being Google Drive's PDF viewer. Well, I noticed a strange thing recently: sometimes PDF files would just load in Drive directly and it seemed that my phone's Downloads folder clutter wasn't getting out of hand as fast as it used to. Some investigation was in order.
Earlier this month, we reported the news that Facebook seemed to be testing multiple account support in its Messenger application on Android. The feature had been turned on for beta testers and some non-beta testers as well, likely to iron out some quirks and bugs before being officially rolled out to everyone.
OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage solution, is a nice alternative (or additional) option to Google Drive. The Android app has offered automatic photo uploads since Feburary 2014 when it was rebranded from Skydrive. However, for the past two years that the feature has been available, it has suffered from one major limitation: no automatic uploads from any folder except your camera roll.
LG is still cheekily announcing bits and pieces of its G5 flagship before the phone itself. After hinting at the always-on display and unveiling a fancy touch cover for the phone, it's now ramping up expectations about the audio performance of the G5 by announcing a collaboration with B&O PLAY, a sub-division of Bang & Olufsen, the well respected Danish audio and video company.
If you have a connected security camera somewhere without a dedicated application, chances are you're using tinyCam to login remotely and stream the video feed to your device. The app is one of the best in its niche and gets frequent updates to stay current with design guidelines and add cool features like a Wear client and a built-in web server.
It's no secret to many of you that I'm a fan of Enpass Password Manager, and last month some of you were able to grab the app for free thanks to a momentary deal and try it out to see if it worked well for you. But whenever I've mentioned Enpass on Android Police, one of the most asked questions and requested features was autofill support. The developer had promised it would come in version 5.0 and today is that day.
