About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Project CARS is a popular motorsport racing simulator on PC and consoles, and apparently, the developer Slightly Mad Studios is teaming up with Gamevil to release an offshoot of the IP on mobile. It's currently going by the name Project CARS GO, which shouldn't be confused with Square Enix's Go series of puzzle games. Details are still very light, but if there is anything interesting about this announcement worth pointing out, it would be the fact that this is Gamevil's first foray into the racing game scene. Let's just say I'm a little trepidatious about this news.

Thanks to a partnership between world-renowned YouTuber PewDiePie and the development studio DoubleMoose (the people behind Goat Simulator), the existence of a goofy physics-based adventure game called Animal Super Squad is a thing, and not only that, it's a thing we can all play on Android right now. If you are at all familiar with the gameplay of Donkey Kong CountryTrials, and Bridge Constructor Portal, then you will start to understand some of the components that make up this ridiculously hilarious release.

With the recent announcement of a Red Alert game coming to Android in China, I started thinking about what other classic properties have yet to find a home on Android. Now, I know we have gotten plenty of garbage that uses the branding of popular classics for a quick buck, but that's not what I'm talking about. I mean more ports or HD remakes that stay true to their original roots and pricing models. So I have put together a wishlist of the top titles I would love to see brought to Android with the love and attention they deserve.

Tencent's release of PUBG Mobile has naturally garnered a lot of attention thanks to its high profile name and solid gameplay on mobile devices. But as we all are well aware, shooters often control poorly on touchscreens. This is why many players have resorted to using Android emulators to get their PUBG Mobile fix. The main reason, of course, would be to take advantage of the superior mouse and keyboard controls.

I can't say I have ever heard of 4L Games before today, but since their first release Fracter isn't coming out until this summer, it stands to reason that they would be mostly unknown. After taking a quick look at their upcoming isometric puzzle adventure game, I have a feeling the studio isn't going to stay unrecognized for long.

Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn't get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can't wait for our weekly roundups, and don't want to wade through a whole day's worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we've got a psychological horror game, baseball simulation, arcade shooter, point and click adventure, platformer, puzzle game, and a side scrolling shooter. Without further ado:

Marmalade Game Studio already has a few digital adaptations of popular Hasbro board games under their belt, so it makes sense that they would be the company to publish an official Battleship game on the Play Store. The thing is, they are very late to the party. For years there have been nothing but clones available on Android, and some of them are actually pretty good. That means BATTLESHIP: Official Edition is going to have some stiff competition on its hands if it wants to succeed.

Gameloft's Dungeon Hunter is a very well known action RPG series for Android, and it looks like the studio is trying to evolve it into something new so that they can latch onto the latest trend of MOBA gameplay. That's why they created Dungeon Hunter Champions. Not only does it contain all of the ARPG gameplay you enjoyed in their earlier Dungeon Hunter titles, but there are also a few different PvP modes thrown into the mix including a 5v5 MOBA battlefield. I suppose the devs feel this will appeal to old and new fans alike, which really isn't a terrible strategy.

Nintendo hasn't released a new game on Android since Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp landed in November 2017. Well, I'm excited to report that I finally have some news on this front. Nintendo and Cygames have announced a new mobile RPG for Android. It's called Dragalia Lost Read. The initial release will take place in Asia this summer, and there should be a worldwide launch sometime after that.

Sometimes it's nice just to sit back and play through a relaxing game on your phone or tablet. No competition, no timers, just a good old fashion single-player experience. In my constant quest to find the best new games on Android, I came across the newly released Still Here... A cute Adventure. It's a beautiful 2D side-scrolling platformer that takes place in a charming dystopian world, and you can grab it today for $3.99.

Hi-Rez Studios is best known for their console and PC games. Most notably their 3rd-person MOBA Smite is one of their biggest successes, though many may have the opinion it has seen better days. It would appear that Hi-Rez is no longer satisfied with the console and PC market, as they are now branching out into mobile gaming with the release of Paladins Strike. If the name sounds familiar, that is because they already have a hero shooter available for consoles and PC called Paladins: Champions of the Realm. This release simply takes the characters and lore from that title to create an offshoot game that is better suited for play on mobile.

Electronic Arts have struck a deal with Tencent and Aiyou Interactive Entertainment to create Red Alert Online for Android and iOS. It will release in China sometime in the near future. There is no word if it will ever see the light of day in the West, but I imagine if it does well, we may actually see a release here. At the very least, this means the franchise isn't dead and forgotten just yet. So maybe if there is a lot of interest, EA will get off its behind and finally give us a new AAA PC game worthy of the license.

Earlier this month we learned that Jam City was planning to release their officially licensed Harry Potter choose your own adventure game on April 25th, and it looks like they have held true to their word. This means you can grab Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery from the Play Store and start on your wizarding adventure as you attend your first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
