About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Early this morning Bloomberg broke the news that the South Korean copyright suit brought against the Fortnite creator Epic Games by PUBG Corp. has been dropped. Apparently PUBG Corp. sent a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games Inc.’s attorneys on Monday, and as a result, the case has been closed.

Sega's Shin Megami Tensei series has been running since 1987, and in the last thirty years some great titles have come and gone including a few offshoot series such as Persona or Devil Summoner. So, of course, it was only a matter of time before a Shin Megami Tensei game was created for mobile. Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 is the result of that creation and it was released in Japan back in January of this year. I'm also glad to report that an English version is indeed coming over to the West, and you can pre-register for a notification upon its official release starting today.

Supercell's mobile multiplayer combat game Brawl Stars has apparently found a lot of success on iOS despite its year-long existence as a soft launched title that few could access. The thing is, Android users never heard one word about a release on our platform, so as you can imagine, fans on our side of the fence were starting to get real antsy. Luckily the devs hinted at an Android version over the weekend and have delivered today by soft launching the game in a few select countries around the world. The official date of the iOS and Android release is still unknown, but it's definitely great to see some movement from the company in this regard. So let's hope we all get to play this real soon.

A few months ago I received an email from 4L Games that first introduced me to its upcoming black and white puzzler Fracter. I was so impressed with what I saw that I decided to write an article about the forthcoming release. Now that I have gotten my hands on an early access build, I have to say I am still left feeling very impressed. The design and gameplay remind me a lot of Monument Valley, but the puzzles lean more on the "escape room" side of things with a few enemies scattered about that you must avoid. Fracter strikes a great balance between its monochromatic design and puzzle-filled gameplay, plus its darker themes will keep you on your toes more than you may first expect.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. This week we have a bunch of paid upfront games with fair pricing, plus there are quite a few other standouts worth installing too. Most notably Evoland 2, Westworld Mobile, and Gorogoa, but you should also take a look at Toca Mystery House, King and Assassins, Suzy Cube, and The Franz Kafka Videogame. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android games released in the last week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous two weeks or so. Today we have some of the biggest players out there including the likes of Google, Adobe, Instagram, and Yahoo. Heck, I even have a live wallpaper and a WTF listing to round out the list. So get ready because these are the most notable Android apps released in the last two weeks.

Sega may have slowed down the release schedule for its SEGA Forever program, but the company is still plugging away by providing us with a few new classic games every so often. The latest classic to join the ranks is everyone's favorite '90s run and gun platformer VectorMan. Like all SEGA Forever releases, you can choose to play for free and deal with numerous advertisements, or plunk down $1.99 through an in-app purchase to remove those ads and enjoy a premium experience.

Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn't get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can't wait for our weekly roundups, and don't want to wade through a whole day's worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we've got a spooky kids game, a digital adaptation of a board game, a 2D/3D platformer, a point-and-click adventure game, an artistic puzzler, and a line-drawing brain teaser. Without further ado:

On the 18th, the official Westworld Twitter account announced that the release for the Westworld Mobile game would take place on the 21st of June. A bunch of sites instantly jumped on this, but I refrained as it's painfully obvious very few publishers can actually hit their target date. In my experience the vast majority of mobile games tend to release a day or two early. In this particular case it would appear my insight paid off. Westworld Mobile is available right now on the Google Play Store, an entire day early.

Pokémon Quest was recently announced at E3 and was also released for the Nintendo Switch on the same day. The blocky design, touch-friendly UI, and casual collection gameplay signify that it's best suited as a mobile game, but alas it wasn't released for Android or iOS. Mobile users were given a tentative "June" release date. Well, I have some good news; not only is Pokémon Quest supposedly releasing on mobile on June 28th, but you can also pre-register for a release announcement on the Play Store right now.

The developers for the mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds aren't wasting any time by adding many new features before the inevitable release of Fortnite on Android. Lucky for us that means we get to play around with a few new changes thanks to the recent 0.6.0 update. The two most notable additions are the new Royale Pass system that earns players various rewards, and a first-person perspective mode that finally gives fans an easy way to enjoy FPS gameplay.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. This week we have quite a few soccer apps thanks to the World Cup just starting, so make sure to check those out if you are a fan. Of course, the release ARK: Survival Evolved is probably the most significant news this week, but Bloons TD 6 and the quirky Silly Walks are also a couple of great titles worth exploring. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android games released in the last week.

Bloons TD 6 is the long-awaited sequel to Ninja Kiwi's hit balloon-popping tower defense game Bloons TD 5. It's been six years since the fifth entry was released on the Play Store, so as you can imagine this sequel has been a long time coming, but the question remains, is the $4.99 cost of entry worth it? Well, that all depends on how you view upfront paid games that also contain a bunch of in-app purchases.

Earlier this month Studio Wildcard announced that its hit dinosaur action-adventure game ARK: Survival Evolved would release for Android on June 14th, and as long as my eyes aren't deceiving me, it would appear that the studio has stayed true to its word. You can grab the dino adventure off of the Play Store right now. Just make sure you have a beefy device, as you will need at least 3 GB of RAM and 2.11 GB of free storage.

The Gears of War franchise is coming to Android, but it's not going to offer what you would expect from the series. Over the weekend at E3 Microsoft announced Gears Pop!, and the game will combine Funko's cutesy Pop! vinyl figures with the Gears of War franchise in order to create something new and exciting for mobile. Sadly we'll have to wait until next year to play it, so make sure you don't get too excited just yet.

Last October PlayRaven and CCP Games announced an official EVE Online mobile game. At the time it was known as Project Aurora. In April of this year, Kongregate made it known that they would publish the game and that it would be called EVE: War of Ascension. Last week it was released on the Play Store, but there is one little problem, it would seem very few Android users can actually install it. Play Store user reviews have been trickling in since June 8th, and apparently they have been coming from players located in the Philippines, which should explain why so few can actually install this game right now. New territories should follow shortly.

Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can't wait for our weekly roundups, and don't want to wade through a whole day's worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we've got a space platformer, a digital board game, a tile-movement puzzler, a side-scrolling platformer, a match-3 dungeon crawler, a falling block puzzler, and a dinosaur-themed survival game. Without further ado:

Studio Wildcard's hit dinosaur-themed survival game ARK: Survival Evolved is coming to Android this spring, and you can pre-register for the release right now on playark.com. Interestingly this upcoming on-the-go version of ARK is being designed and developed by War Drum Studios as a free-to-play release. It's supposed to closely mirror the online survival experience contained in the PC and console versions, though there will be some necessary changes with the shift in monetization, which leaves me apprehensive as to how the finished product will turn out.
