About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Last week we learned that Command & Conquer: Rivals would be launching worldwide on December 4th, which is today. Lo and behold EA has stuck to the release date as the game is now available for download from the Play Store. It's billed as a fast-paced real-time strategy game, but really it's just a Clash Royale clone with a C&C skin.

The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a game that many people remember fondly. Sure, it may not be the perfect skateboarding game, but it definitely nailed the fun of the sport to the point that it's now considered a classic. This is why I'm sure more than a few of you will be excited to hear an official Tony Hawk skateboarding game is coming to Android. It's called Tony Hawk's Skate Jam, and it just popped up on the Play Store for pre-registration.

So without further ado, here are the most notable Android apps released in the last two weeks.

Bethesda has announced that The Elder Scrolls: Blades will now be released in early 2019. Back in June our own Corbin Davenport went hands-on with the title on the show floor of E3, which is where Todd Howard had teased the original release date of fall 2018. With the current kerfuffle surrounding Bethesda's Fallout 76, it would appear that it's probably not in the best interest of the company to publish a free-to-play game that takes advantage of the fan-favorite Elder Scrolls license, potentially explaining this unexpected delay.

There's a new bundle available on the Humble Bundle website, and it contains a bunch of digital board game adaptations from Asmodee Digital. CSR Racing 2 originally released on Android back in June of 2016. It's now over two years later, and the game is still running strong. But in order to keep fans happy over the years, new features have to roll out, and so Zynga has just announced a significant update to the game that adds sixteen new cars that span from the '60s to today. So if you have a hankering for collecting iconic vehicles, make sure to check out the new Legends update.

Last month Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed Rebellion would be releasing for Android on November 21st. Well, it would appear that the strategy RPG is here a day early. It's a free to play title with that heavily leans on a hero collection aspect, so if you've ever wanted to assemble your favorite assassins into the ultimate team, now's your chance.

Gameloft is throwing its hat into the battle royale ring with a top-down shooter called Royale Rising. A team based in Brisbane Australia is developing the title, and if you'd like to take a look at how their work is progressing, you can jump into the limited early access beta today to give it a spin. It has been seven years since Mojang released Minecraft on Android. There used to be a demo on the Play Store back in the early Pocket Edition days, but it was removed in 2013. Well, that's all in the past now. Mojang recently added a new demo listing to the Play Store, and it's called Minecraft Trial. It's a soft-launch title, so it isn't available in the US just yet, but if the reviews are anything to go by, then it's clearly available in a few other regions.

Back in June Supercell soft launched Brawl Stars on the Play Store for a few select regions, and today the studio has announced that the game will finally open its doors to the rest of the world this December. You can pre-register for the upcoming release right now, and there are even a few rewards you can earn by doing so.

Details have been few and far between over the last year, though the title was expected to release sometime in 2018. Today Niantic has finally broken its silence to release a teaser trailer for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. We have also learned that the game has been pushed back to a 2019 release date and that there's a new website available for those of you that would like to sign up for future news about the project.
