About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

SimpleRockets 2 recently arrived on the Play Store as a pre-registration listing. It comes from Jundroo, the same developer behind the successful simulation games SimpleRockets and SimplePlanes. Currently, SimpleRockets 2 is available on Steam as an early-access release, but the recent pre-reg listing on the Play Store should mean that we can expect the rocket space sim to land on Android sometime soon.

Activision and Tencent have teamed up to bring Call of Duty: Mobile to the West as a free-to-play release. The shooter was recently announced during a Unity keynote at the 2019 Game Developers Conference. This upcoming release is expected to bring together fan-favorite maps, modes, weapons, and characters from across the Call of Duty franchise, and it's currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store.

The Pokémon GO team has announced today that Pokémon GO will receive an update that brings new Pokémon from the Unova region (Pokémon Black and Pokémon White). This update is not live yet, though it should land sometime today. Along with these new Gen 5 Pokémon, players can expect new hatchlings, additional Pokémon for raids, and unique region-specific Pokémon for Asia, Europe, the US, as well as the Western and Eastern hemispheres. New shinies are also expected, and the Unova Stone makes its first appearance, which will allow specific Pokémon to evolve.

It would appear that mobile games with high refresh rates are becoming more and more popular now that there's a slew of Android devices out there that support 90-120fps. For the uninitiated, the higher the refresh rate for a game, the better it looks in action, which is why gamers are often concerned with refresh rates. Of course, it's difficult to keep track of the many phones that support high framerates, so in this roundup, I'll first go into the devices available and which ones stand above the crowd. Then I'll list out some of the standout games that support high frame rates, and after that, you'll find a full list of supported Android games. Essentially this is a roundup of everything to do with the games and devices that support high refresh rates, compiled by yours truly.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have a quality indie adventure game themed around running a small-town Sheriff department, a new Slender Man release, and an adorable food-themed puzzle game. So without further ado, here are the most notable games released this week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous two weeks or so. Today I have a dark theme app for Android 10 users, a beta listing for the Vivaldi browser, and the first regional app launch for the Disney+ streaming service. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android apps released in the last two weeks.

Welcome to the start of the weekend, everyone. As always, I've highlighted the more interesting titles in bold to make discovery more accessible. I'm also excited to announce that we have a sponsor today, so please give Scrolling Words - Search Word from Moving Letters a warm welcome for supporting our work to report the best sales available on the Play Store.

PUBG Mobile appears to be on a monthly update cycle, and since we received the 0.14.0 update on August 14th, it makes sense that 0.14.5 would drop this week. While it would still appear that 0.14.5 has yet to be pushed out to the Play Store, a recent tweet clearly states that we can expect the update in the afternoon. This announcement also signals the start of Royale Pass Season 9, and of course, a few new additions are in tow, including a new season timer, redesigned missions/ranking pages, and an upgraded Royale Pass sharing page.

Back in December of 2018 we received Weappy Studio's indie simulation adventure game This Is the Police on Android, and today the sequel has popped up on the Play Store for pre-registration. An official announcement released today states that the game is coming to both Android and iOS sometime soon, and if you'd like to pre-register for the Android release, you can do so on the new Play Store listing.

Square Enix has announced that Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa: Scarlet Grace Ambitions will be coming to Android in the West. Both games have never been available with an official English translation, so this will be the first time many get to experience these RPGs. Romancing SaGa 3 will offer a brand-new HD remaster that comes with new dungeons as well as a game+ mode, and SaGa: Scarlet Grace Ambitions will provide an enhanced version of the original title from 2016.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. The week is almost over, so that means it's time to once again check out the current sales on the Google Play Store. As always, I've highlighted the more interesting titles in bold to make discovery more accessible, and two of my personal favorites are the games Space Grunts and Slayaway Camp, so don't forget to give those titles a look. I'm also excited to announce that we have a sponsor today, so please give Magi+: Magic Video Editor a warm welcome for supporting our work to report the best sales available on the Play Store.

Last month we learned that the construction management sim Tropico was finally coming to Android, and today I'm here to let everyone know that the title is officially available on the Google Play Store. Despite its name, this is actually a mobile port of Tropico 3 that has been available on iOS since 2018, and today Android users can finally get in on the fun, all thanks to Feral Interactive.

Two weeks ago 2K released the companion app MyNBA2K20 on the Google Play Store, which is a yearly ritual that usually signals the launch of the annual release for the NBA 2K series is right around the corner. We already knew that the console and PC version of NBA 2K20 would arrive on September 6th, but it looks like the mobile version is here a day ahead of its brethren.

For many people in the West, the Fist of the North Star anime film was their first introduction to Japanese animated cartoons, and so holds a special place in their heart. I recall being blown away by the movie in the early '90s, and luckily Sega has seen fit to bring its upcoming Fist of the North Star: Legends ReVIVE mobile action game to the West in its first English-language mobile debut, complete with new art designed under the watch of the original manga illustrator Tetsuo Hara.

Of course, this is a short list today, so if you're looking for a sales roundup with some meat on it, don't forget to check out Monday's sales.

Back in March of 2014 our own Ryan Whitwam took the original release of Out There for a spin, and he came away impressed with the fledgling sci-fi roguelike. Eventually, the game was reworked to improve its graphics and add extra content. This version is known as Out There: Ω Edition, and the developer Mi-Clos Studio has announced that its sequel will be coming to Android in the winter of 2020. This title is known as Out There: Oceans of Time, and supposedly it will offer a much more ambitious game that brings along many new features to the series.

The latest Star Wars movie should arrive in theaters at the tail end of 2019, and so it makes sense that Warner Bros, LEGO, and Lucasfilm would want to capitalize on the film with a new mobile strategy game slated to arrive on the Play Store sometime in 2020. This title is called LEGO Star Wars Battles, and it's specifically designed for mobile devices to blend LEGO Star Wars characters, vehicles, and locations with real-time 1v1 multiplayer battles.
