About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Zombieland: Double Tapper is a new release that comes from Sony Pictures, and it's a tie-in product for the Zombieland: Double Tap movie coming to theatres on the 18th. Like most branded titles, this is a free-to-play game, and it's essentially an idle tapper that contains gacha mechanics. So you better believe you can expect heavy monetization that's tied to the game's many loot boxes and currencies, all wrapped up in a title that serves as an advertisement for a movie. That's right. Sony would like everyone to sink money into an advertisement disguised as a game, which just about sums up the current state of F2P mobile gaming.

Over the weekend, Fortnite went dark as a massive publicity stunt where the game's battle royale island was sucked into a black hole. Today marks the launch of Chapter 2, and it brings along some significant changes. The most notable being the addition of a new island that replaces the last, but you can also expect new water-based gameplay, new hideouts/explosives, plus combat has been upgraded with a streamlined weapon arsenal. You can also expect less of a grind thanks to a brand new XP system and Medals for Chapter 2's Battle Pass. All in all, the launch of Chapter 2 appears to be a big one, so if you're eager to play, I'm happy to report that that the first season in the latest chapter is live.

Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Don't Dry is a point and click adventure game that's the newest title in the franchise. The game has been available on PC and consoles for some time now, but as of today, it has been officially released on Android. Much like the previous titles in the series, this is an adventure game for adults, and since I grew up playing these classics, I'm happy to report that you can still expect the same potty humor as the originals. This means Wet Dreams Don't Dry isn't a game for children, though if you have a penchant for sexually-themed puns, it would appear today's release is a return to form.

Welcome to the roundup of the latest Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have a new Digimon game that offers single-player and PvP battles, a fantastic action game themed around Lovecraft's horrors, and the continuation of the Xenowerk series with a competent offshoot strategy title. So without further ado, here are the more notable Android games released the week of October 7th, 2019.

It was recently brought to my attention that it's often difficult to find quality tower defense games on the Google Play Store, and since this is a subject I've yet to cover in a roundup in my three years at AP, I figured it's about time I rounded up the best TD games currently available, so that's what I've done. Below you'll find 15 of the best tower defense titles on Android. I've primarily ordered the list by the number of downloads on the Play Store, though I did place a personal favorite at the top since it's a recent release most people may not be familiar with. So if you're a colossal tower defense addict, get ready to discover the best titles available on the Play Store in 2019.

I suppose with Google's Stadia on the horizon, it makes sense that Nvidia would be looking to expand its own game streaming service, and since this service has been in beta for some time now as the company retooled the platform, it's nice to know that we are finally nearing the official release. I'm also excited to see what Nvidia's new mobile-focused app brings, as I would love to finally be able to stream my GeForce games on my phones, non-Shield tablets, and Chromebooks. Nvidia has mentioned that physical controllers will be necessary for many of the compatible titles, much like the Shield TV offering, so nothing much has changed on this front. For all intents and purposes, it looks like Nvidia is going to take its game streaming service seriously by offering a quality competitor to Stadia. While it's still early days, I have to say I'm excited to see what the future holds.

The indie studio La Belle Games has revealed today that its gorgeous adventure game The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature is coming to Android this November. The title offers handcrafted watercolor environments themed around the story of Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein. This is a narrative-based adventure game where player decisions will evolve the landscape and soundtrack throughout the title, so essentially plays like an ever-evolving painting inspired by the Romantic era.

Bandai Namco's RPG battler Digimon ReArise has been available in Japan since 2018, and today we've learned that the studio will bring the game to the West before the end of 2019. This newly-announced English version is already available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, and the description details a free-to-play game that offers an original story where players will face off in 5v5 battles while actively building friendship bonds between their Tamers and Digimon.

Welcome to the roundup of the latest Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have the official release for Call of Duty Mobile, a new Clash Royale clone from Sega, and an adorable perspective-based puzzler staring an octopus. So without further ado, here are the more notable Android games released the week of September 30, 2019.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous two weeks or so. Today I have a snapshot release for the Vivaldi Browser, a new messaging app from Instagram, and a new release from Duet that makes it easy to turn your Android device into a secondary display. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android apps and live wallpapers released in the last two weeks.

Back in March Activision and Tencent officially announced Call of Duty: Mobile at the 2019 Game Developers Conference, and in the middle of last month we learned that the mobile shooter would be officially released on the Google Play Store on October 1st, which means the game is now available on Android. As expected, this is a free-to-play release. In-app purchases, loot boxes, and a premium pass are included, not to mention a plethora of cosmetic items and an expensive in-game currency. Still, the amount of nostalgia offered in the title is hard to ignore, and the gameplay luckily holds up, which is why the game is definitely worth a look.

League of Wonderland is a strategy game themed around fairy tales, historical figures, and popular myths to create an ensemble cast where players use hero cards to defeat their opponent's tower within a 2-minute timespan, much like Clash Royale. It will be up to you to lead your characters to victory to become the best player in the League of Wonderland.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have Nintendo's free-to-play mobile racer Mario Kart Tour, a port of a premium tower defense game, and a delightful card-based puzzler. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android games released the week of September 23, 2019.

Lock's Quest was originally a Nintendo DS tower defense game released in 2008, and it eventually made its way to consoles and PC in 2017. This means the game was originally a premium release with an upfront price, and a mobile port just arrived on the Play Store for $7.99 without any in-app purchases or advertisements in tow, retaining the title's fair monetization. While reviews are currently mixed on the Steam listing, it's still nice to see a new premium port arrive on Android.

At the tail end of August we learned that Mario Kart Tour would land on Android on September 25th, and early this morning, the racer was officially released on the Play Store. Now, the thing to remember is that this is a game that has been delayed more than a few times, with announced dates coming and going, and now that I've played the end product, it's clear why. At its core, Mario Kart Tour is yet another bland gacha game with a famous brand slapped on top, but things get much worse than this, so strap in, because this ride's about to get very bumpy.

Amazon has introduced a new perk for Prime members that offers exclusive mobile game content, and to start this new feature with a bang, Amazon has chosen PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile as the first game to participate. The title's exclusive Prime content can only be claimed in-game, and you'll have to ensure you're on the latest version to participate. There are six loot drops total that will be available for PUBG Mobile, and this initial campaign will run until December, but only the first item (Infiltrator Mask) is currently available to Prime members, with the rest rolling out in the next three months.Besides the Infiltrator Mask, Prime members can also expect to claim the Infiltrator Jacket, Infiltrator Pants, and Infiltrator Shoes to complete their Prime-exclusive set, plus the Black Magma Parachute and brand new Blood Oath – Kar98K is also expected. These items will be released on a schedule, so you'll have to wait patiently to claim each one. If you'd like to view this schedule in full, I've pasted it below.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have the return of Downwell (and it's currently free), the sequel to SimpleRockets, and an interesting soccer management game that sports a unique story. So without further ado, here are the most notable games released this week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have an early-access release for a new feature-filled email app, a new video streaming app from BET, and a new open-source Reddit app. So without further ado, here are the most notable Android apps released in the last week.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. Now that the week is almost over it's time again to go through all of the major sales currently running on the Google Play Store. As always, I've highlighted the interesting titles in bold, and there are a lot of good games in the list today, so make sure you don't miss out on titles like Downwell and Line Rider. I'm also happy to announce that we have a sponsor today, so please give a warm welcome to World Conqueror 4 for supporting our work to report the best sales available on the Play Store.

For those that didn't hear, Downwell was removed from the Play Store by Google in June over a technical issue with the game. It would appear that this issue could not be fixed, and so a new version had to be created. This new version arrived on the Play Store yesterday after a brief stint in early-access last week. Since there are many people out there that had already paid for the delisted version of Downwell that would also have to repay to gain access to the new listing, Devolver Digital is going to offer the game for free for seven days starting on September 20th.
