About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is the latest cash-grab from Zynga, now available on the Play Store

Just what everyone wanted, yet another money-grubbing match-3 game

By

Zynga has officially announced that it's working on a Harry Potter match-3 game for mobile. This game is called Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, and of course, Zynga has yet to share a single screenshot or video of the title. Paradoxically Zynga has noted that the game is already available as a soft-launch release in the Philippines, which means the studio is already publicly testing the title, which begs the question as to why there are zero screenshots or videos shared with today's announcement. Could it be that Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is such a shallow cash grab that it's in the developer's best interest to hide what the game looks like before an official worldwide release?

Welcome to Friday, everyone. Now that the weekend is almost here, it's time once again to check out all of the app and game sales currently available on the Google Play Store. It looks like discounted icons are the name of the game today, thanks to a plethora of releases from coccco28. Rest assured, I still have a few standouts to share with everyone, including the idle clicker A Dark Room. If you're looking for something a little more relaxing, then perhaps the hidden object game Hidden Through Time is more your speed. Asmodee Digital is best known for bringing many board games to Android thanks to its penchant for creating worthwhile digital ports of physical games. Despite the fact that board games are now more popular than ever, it would seem Asmodee has already worked through its catalog of easily-recognizable titles, such as Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne. This means Scythe: Digital Edition might not have the same name recognition as its forebearers, but it's still a quality release that captures the physical version's asymmetric competitive play.

RedMagic 5S review: Great at games, but not much else

Bugs and a lack of polish are too frustrating for long-term use

Gaming phones are a newer niche for Android devices, and Nubia is one of the companies running headlong into this fledgling field. This past May, we took a look at the Red Magic 5, and we did not come away impressed thanks to numerous bugs and compromises. Now that the Red Magic 5S is here, and we can say for certain that features like internal cooling and a high refresh rate come at a cost: the Red Magic 5S is good for gaming but not much else.

Don't miss out on the sales for Space Marshals, Templar Battleforce RPG, and Hexologic

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. Today we have more than a few apps and game sales to share with everyone, along with a handful of standouts, such as Pixelbite's excellent top-down shooter Space Marshals. There's also a sale on Templar Battleforce RPG, a fantastic strategic role-playing game from Trese Brothers. We also have the enjoyable minimal puzzler Hexologic, which is a great title to wind down with at the end of the day. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 18 temporarily free and 47 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Tree Men Games racing series PAKO has found a fair bit of success thanks to its breezy controls and casual obstacle avoidance gameplay. The last title we covered was PAKO 2, which was released two years ago, and expanded on the original title's gameplay. It was an enjoyable release. Today Tree Men Games has launched PAKO Caravan. It, too, offers a bunch of casual avoidance fun, but it also provides a new mechanic where you'll collect cars in a line, much like the classic video game Snake, making for a familiar but unique experience for seasoned fans of the previous titles.

For the last few years, Rovio has really been scraping the bottom of the barrel with its Angry Birds franchise. It would seem the dev has been slapping the property onto just about every casual gaming genre out there, from bubble poppers to match-3 titles, and then right back to bubble poppers, Rovio is clearly out of ideas. This is probably why the company is currently testing Angry Birds Legends in the UK, Sweden, and Finland as we speak. It's a card-based gacha RPG that stars Angry Birds characters, and since it's currently in testing in select regions, I've gone ahead and sideloaded the APK (v2.0.1) in order to take a closer look.

PUBG Mobile was initially released on Android in 2018, and over the last two years, the game has seen many updates and improvements, but it still hasn't reached version 1.0. Well, this will all change on September 8th. PUBG Corporation has just announced that a slew of improvements are coming with the update to version 1.0 this September. This is so the game will offer a smoother experience for eSports. You see, PUBG Mobile World League and the World Championship are going to be combined this November into one event called PUBG Mobile Global Championship (absolutely nothing confusing about that), which will offer a $2-million prize pool.
