About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Trading stocks is currently a hot topic, all thanks to a recent event where redditors figured out how to stick it to a hedge fund that was trying to short GameStop. On top of this, stocks, in general, have been blowing up during Covid, which is also driving the current interest in trading. This is why I've decided to compile a list of the more notable trading apps currently available on the Play Store. Now, I don't fancy myself a day trader, so I'm not here to review these apps. This is simply a list for our readers to pore over as they consider the available options on Android. Essentially, this roundup serves as an entry point for those who are thinking of dipping their toe into the stock market in preparation for the next wave of stock market fever.

Re-Logic confirms Terraria will continue to be supported on the Play Store

But future games from the studio will not be coming to Google platforms

4
By

Andrew Spinks is the primary developer behind the hit indie survival game Terraria. He's the founder of Re-Logic, the development studio that created Terraria, and this studio was planning on bringing Terraria to Stadia, but this may have changed thanks to Google locking Spinks out of his Google account. You see, Google sent Spinks a ToS warning for a YouTube violation, which was ignored thinking it was sent in error, and so Google did what is does best and banned Spinks' account for this violation, which has caused Spinks to hit back by announcing that the Stadia version of Terraria will no longer happen.

Slay the Spire brings its deck-building roguelike action to Android

Humble Games delivers again — this studio is on a roll

By

It's official. Humble Games will be bringing Slay the Spire to Android on February 3rd, which is only a few days away. The game was initially released in early access back in 2017 for PC, and then was officially launched on PC and consoles in 2019, and last year the game made its way to iOS, and now it's clear Android users will soon be able to get in on the fun. If you're unfamiliar with the title, it's a roguelike deck builder where you'll use your cards to battle enemies as you make your way up the spire in an effort to reach the top.

FIFA is coming to Stadia on March 17

Only a few more weeks to go

4
By

Madden and FIFA were the two hotly anticipated releases for Stadia this year, thanks to Electronic Arts announced that both games would come to the platform back in April of 2020. Madden arrived last week, and today EA has confirmed that FIFA 21 will come to Stadia on March 17. This news comes hot off the heels of yesterday's announcement from Google that it's shutting down its internal development studios, so the fact we've learned today that FIFA is indeed coming soon feels a little bittersweet.

Titan Quest: Legendary Edition launches on Android for $20

Yes, this release includes all DLC

By

DotEmu initially brought a mobile port of Titan Quest to Android back in 2016, though it would appear HandyGames took over the reins at some point. Oddly enough, the iOS version of this action RPG has seen a few different releases come and go, and so it looks to now be Android's turn. That's right, there's a Legendary Edition of Titan Quest coming to Android sometime soon, and it's already available for pre-registration.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have the early access release for a mobile adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, a new Slashy puzzler from Blue Wizard Digital, and the latest gacha cash-grab from Square Enix. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Magic: The Gathering Arena enters early access on Android

Wizards of the Coast finally brings its collectible card game to mobile

4
By

Over the years, we've seen a plethora of collectible card games come and go. Though one thing has remained a constant, the genre lends itself well to mobile play. To this day, there's still no shortage of CCGs on the Play Store, and yet there was always one title that was missing, Magic: The Gathering. Well, Wizards of the Coast has been busy working on its digital adaptation for a while now, and it's called MTG Arena. It's been known the title would eventually make its way to mobile, but we've just learned that the CCG will be coming to Android as an early access release on January 28th, with broader support slated for later this year.

Niantic has just released a beta and dogfood app for Ingress Prime on the Google Play Store. These are both clearly testing apps for the game, and the beta's description even provides a link to a Google Doc for users to report the issues they run into when testing this beta (though this link's text is currently cut off, so you can't navigate to the appropriate page). Then there's the dogfood app, which should ideally exist for Niantic employees to test new features. However, having installed the titles, it's clear they are public-facing, so everyone is free to jump into both the dogfood and beta apps to check them out, and apparently, the release notes for the dogfood version will appear in the Ingress Prime release notes in the future.

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. While today's sales list is on the shorter side, I still have a few standouts to share with everyone. First up is a discount for Monopoly Sudoku, a newer release from Marmalade Game Studio, a developer that offers many Hasbro-themed games. Next, I have FolderSync Pro, a simple file explorer that supports the cloud as well as local storage. Last is DISTRAINT: Deluxe Edition, which goes on sale often, but is still a worthwhile adventure game if you've yet to play. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 16 temporarily free and 17 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Dragon Quest Tact is the latest gacha game from Square Enix, now available on Android

Square sure knows how to bleed its properties dry

4
By

Square Enix has announced that its free-to-play collection-based tactical RPG Dragon Quest Tact will be coming to the West on both Android and iOS. Back in February (2020), Square announced the game for Japan, and it would appear it was launched in July (2020) and has already racked up 500,000 installs. I suppose this success is the reason the game will soon come to new territories. While the English version isn't slated for a release until 2021, it's already available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store.
