About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Don't miss out on the sales for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, Muse Dash, and Titan Quest: Legendary Edition

Welcome to Friday, everyone. It's almost the weekend, and so it's time to check out the latest app and game sales on the Play store. I certainly have a few standouts today, starting with the new release for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, which is on sale until April 4th. The next standout is Muse Dash, an enjoyable rhythm game. Last but not least is Titan Quest: Legendary Edition, which is a great action RPG, though the Android version is still a little buggy. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 18 temporarily free and 40 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is available on Android a day early

And it's filled with in-app purchases

By

It would appear that two Crash Bandicoot fans (Jump Button and Motwera) have uncovered an upcoming mobile Crash Bandicoot game through a Facebook search. Currently, there is a survey available for the supposed Crash Bandicoot Mobile title on StoreMaven (a mobile growth website) that mentions the game isn't available yet while simultaneously asking for input to improve the game's development. So while the existence of Crash Bandicoot Mobile has yet to be confirmed by King, the recent leak from Jump Button and Motwera looks pretty convincing.

Rocket League is coming to Android later this year — just not the version you want

It's called Rocket League Sideswipe, and you'll play on a 2D plane

By

Psyonix has just announced that it will be bringing Rocket League to mobile, but it won't come as the core game but instead an offshoot made specifically for mobile that plays on a 2D plane. This title is known as Rocket League Sideswipe, and the graphics are 3D, though the gameplay will see you race from one side of a 2D screen to the other in order to make or block goals, much like a platformer. Rocket League Sideswipe is expected to arrive sometime later this year.

A NetEase developer known as Dahua Studios has just announced that it's working on an upcoming racing game for mobile in conjunction with Codemasters, and it will enter into open beta this month. The game is called Racing Master. It's a real-time simulation racer that's utilizing the Unreal 4 engine as well as some proprietary Codemasters tech, who just so happens to be a developer with a slew of famous racers under its belt, such as DiRT, GRID, and F1.

12 temporarily free and 42 on-sale apps and games for Wednesday

Don't miss out on the sales for Samorost 3, Star Traders: Frontiers, and Dragon Quest III

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. Even though the middle of the week tends to be slow when it comes to sales, I have a handful of noteworthy titles today, including a few standouts. First up is Samorost 3, a gorgeous adventure game from Amanita Design. Next, I have Star Traders: Frontiers, a quality roguelike RPG from the Trese Brothers. Last but not least is Dragon Quest III, which is one of the better JRPG ports from Square Enix. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 12 temporarily free and 42 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Puzzle Quest 3 lands on Android in early access

Yes, it's free to play

4
By

505 Games recently purchased the developer Infinity Plus Two, a studio that owned the rights to the Puzzle Quest match-3 series. This series started out in 2007 and is fondly remembered thanks to the fact it popularized RPG mechanics in match-3 games, adding depth to the genre, all while offering a fair price point. Of course, things have changed over the last 14 years, and now the match-3 genre is pretty much synonymous with awful monetization, especially on mobile. Well, 505 Games has just announced that it will bring Puzzle Quest 3 to mobile and PC later this year. Sadly we already know the developer plans to launch the title as a free-to-play release, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for this long-awaited follow-up since its stated direction is worrying.

Project Cars Go speeds onto Android as a one-tap racer

Too bad the servers won't be live for another hour

4
By

The last time we heard about Project Cars Go was way back in 2018 when Gamevil announced the title. Apparently the racer entered into an open beta in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands last month, and today the game is finally available on the Play Store for pre-registration, at least in the US. This should all signal that we are nearing the game's launch, not that it's easy to get excited for yet another CSR Racing clone for mobile.

First up is the original Bridge Constructor, an enjoyable game all about constructing bridges. Next, I have Siege of Dragonspear, a quality CRPG that lands somewhere in between Baldur’s Gate One and Two. Last but not least is Vengeance RPG, an indie ARPG that stacks up to titles like Diablo II. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 28 temporarily free and 43 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. We have an absolutely packed list of sales today, which means I also have some standouts worth sharing. First up is the console port SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, which is on sale for its first time. Next up is Chrono Trigger, one of the best JRPG's Square Enix has ever produced. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 24 temporarily free and 55 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

Cobra Kai: Card Fighter lands on Android, and it fails to pack a punch

No, it's not the recently-released console fighter, this is a card game

By

We've just learned that Boss Team Games will be bringing an all-new Cobra Kai fighting game to mobile. It's called Cobra Kai: Card Fighter, and as you can guess, it's a card-based fighting game. It's being developed by Gamaga and is already available for pre-registration. The game will be free-to-play (as if there was any question), and it will be officially released on March 19th.

Don't miss out on the sales for Ticket to Ride, Atom RPG, and Crying Suns

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. Despite a slow week, we have some solid sales today, with several standouts worth mentioning. First up is Ticket to Ride, an enjoyable board game adaptation from Asmodee Digital. Next up is Atom RPG, a quality indie CRPG that shouldn't be missed. Last I have Crying Suns, a tactical roguelite well-worth the current sale price. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 11 temporarily free and 36 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Dungeon of the Endless has made its way to mobile, but it's a sloppy port

You'll definitely want to play on a tablet

4
By

Dungeon of the Endless is a positively reviewed indie roguelike tower defense game that's popular on Steam, and it just landed on Android as Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee. You can pick up this new mobile version today for $5, which is currently 30% off the future retail price. This purchase includes all of the title's DLC, so it's a complete package that offers a revamped interface for mobile. Sadly this port still feels pretty rough. Not only is the game too dark to see anything, but the text is too small, the tutorial is painful, and there's no controller support.

Tomb Raider Reloaded enters soft launch in select regions

Gamers in Thailand and the Philippines can now jump in

By

The official Tomb Raider account on Twitter has just tweeted that there's a new Tomb Raider game coming to mobile, and it's called Tomb Raider Reloaded. It's currently in development under Emerald City Games in cooperation with the Square Enix London mobile team, and it's slated to arrive sometime in 2021.

First up is Dungeon Warfare, an enjoyable tower defense game that also has a sequel on sale today. Nest up is The Eyes of Ara, a puzzle-based escape room game. Last but not least is Baldur's Gate II, which goes on sale often, but is still one of the best CRPGs ever made. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 25 temporarily free and 52 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have a unique driving game where you'll drive blind, an enjoyable card game from one of the more dedicated indies on the platform, and a fun little pinball game that you play in landscape. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Today's roundup is centered around classic games that have been updated with modern graphics, often known as remasters or enhanced editions. These are all older titles in the grand scheme of things, but they've all been updated with modern aesthetics to support modern Android devices. In total, I have 24 games to share with everyone, having cleaned up the list while adding in some new additions. I'd also like to point out that this roundup also serves as a sister list to my retro port roundup, so if you're looking for even more classic games, make sure to check out the companion article. Without further ado, here are 24 classic games remade for Android with a modern design, updated for 2021.
