About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous three weeks or so. Today's roundup is sponsored by Weatherback Wallpaper, a unique wallpaper app that can display real-time weather effects on your homescreen and lockscreen. Earlier this week Diablo Immortal entered into a closed alpha test in Australia, and I've managed to gain access to this alpha and so I've recorded an hour-long gameplay video at 1080p/60FPS so everyone can see how it currently plays. This video shows off all of the selectable characters, the game's settings, and offers plenty of gameplay as the Crusader. While Blizzard is adamant that Diablo Immortal is still a work in progress, since the current alpha is limited to Australia I figured those around the rest of the world might want to see how development is moving forward.

Runescape is coming to Android, and you can get some freebies if you pre-register now

After several years in beta, this popular MMORPG is coming to the Play Store this summer

By

It's been a while since we've heard about the upcoming release for RuneScape on mobile, three years in fact. Until now, members who have been actively paying for a RuneScape subscription have been able to test the mobile beta, but now it would appear that Jagex is finally ready to release the game to the masses. As of this afternoon, interested parties can pre-register for the MMO on the Google Play Store. Depending on how many people register, there will be varying exclusive in-game rewards.

The Warhammer series has seen many mobile releases, and almost all of them are horrible cash-grabs. Apparently, Games Workshop will license the property out to anyone, but for once, I have a Warhammer announcement that's actually good news. You see, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is a well-reviewed strategy game from PC and consoles that's coming to mobile soon. To be more specific, this is a turned-based strategy game that plays similarly to the X-Com series, and it's coming to Android and iOS tablets on April 22nd.

Blizzard has announced that the latest alpha test for Diablo Immortal is underway. Much like the technical alpha that launched back in December, this new closed alpha is available primarily to those that live in Australia. Keep in mind this is a limited alpha, so only a select number of people will be able to get in. As expected, this limited alpha signals that development is continuing forward, especially now that there is some end-game content available along with new zones, dungeons, and a raised level cap.

Apex Legends is finally coming to Android

The closed beta starts this month, but there's no cross-play with consoles or PC

By

Electronic Arts has finally revealed that it's bringing the hit battle royale game Apex Legends to mobile. As a matter of fact, this mobile version will enter into a closed beta test later this month on Android. Sadly only a few thousand players in India and the Philippines will be able to take part in this newly-announced testing phase, though there are plans to roll the game out to further regions as the year progresses. Much like the PC and console versions of the game, this mobile adaptation will be free-to-play.
