About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Albion Online comes from many of the people that worked on EVE Online, and so it too is a sandbox MMO, and as you can see in the picture above, it offers a fantasy theme. Back when the game was crowdfunded through founders packs, it was promised that an Android and iOS version would be made. An Android APK has been available since 2017, but the iOS version is still missing. Well, as of today, Sandbox Interactive has announced that the MMO will be officially released on Android and iOS this summer, with cross-play in tow for all platforms.

It's been a while since Minecraft saw a significant feature update, about a year, in fact. Today marks the release of the first Caves & Cliffs update, bringing with it three new mobs, a bunch of new blocks, and some new craftable items, such as a spyglass. And this is only the first update for Caves & Cliffs. A second patch is slated for release this holiday season which will assuredly bring even more content to the game.

If you're a big fan of games like Stardew Valley, Story of Seasons, and Animal Crossing, then the upcoming release for My Time at Portia should pique your interest. It's a farming simulation game at its core, but it also offers a host of life sim features, plus a few RPG mechanics, and it all takes place in a 3D open world. The game will arrive on Android and iOS this summer, but so far, there isn't a specific date.

There really is a Final Fantasy battle royale coming, and I played it for 20 minutes

It's PUBG with a Final Fantasy skin, and I recorded my first drop

4
By

At the beginning of the year, Square Enix announced two mobile games themed around Final Fantasy VII, more than likely a reaction to the Remake's success on PS4. Of course, since Square is often reactionary to its successes, these two mobile offshoots didn't have any release dates. Of the two games, Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier has recently entered into a closed beta test, and since I got in, I've recorded a 20-minute gameplay video of my first jump in what is clearly a PUBG clone. So if you're eager to see Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier's battle royale gameplay in action, I indeed show off what the closed beta currently has to offer.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. Not only is today the start of the week, but it's also Memorial Day. So even though things are slow thanks to the holiday, I still have more than a few standout sales to share with everyone. First up is This War of Mine, a fantastic simulation survival game that's very heavily discounted. Next, I have Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, which goes on sale often, but it still one of the best CRPGs ever made. Last but not least is 911 Operator, a unique simulation game where you'll fill the role of an emergency dispatcher. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. Asus ROG Phone 5 long-term review: Expensive but worth it

A beastly device with a price to match

4
By

There's no doubt that the Asus ROG Phone 5 is a beast — as a gaming phone, it packs all of the latest and greatest hardware, and that makes it a really chunky boy. Asus has a laser focus on gaming-centric features that will delight its core demographic, but the ROG 5 isn’t a complete nightmare to use outside of gaming either. The ROG Phone 5 offers stable everyday use with the added benefit of killer specs that can be tweaked and adjusted like a gaming PC. This is indeed a phone for gamers, but that means it lacks some popular features, and the software has some rough edges. It might be the right phone for the right person, but it’ll be a tough sell for most with an asking price in excess of $1,000.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have a fantastic run and gun game, an intriguing narrative-based puzzler, and a delightful exploration puzzle game that pops off the screen. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Earlier this week, Square Enix released a closed beta for NieR Re[in]carnation. So I've sideloaded the title not only to see how it plays but to record a lengthy gameplay video so that everyone can see exactly what's in store once the game is officially released in the US. To my surprise, even though NieR Re[in]carnation is a wave-based auto-battle gacha RPG, it's highly polished. Hands-down, the music is phenomenal, the art is stylish, and the story is intriguingly dark, making for one of the better gacha games I've played, something I definitely didn't expect. So if you're eager to check it out, I've recorded an hour and ten minutes of the closed beta for your viewing pleasure.

Next up is Lock's Quest, a fantastic action RPG that made its way from the Nintendo DS to the Play Store. Last up is 9th Dawn III RPG, a deep and rewarding game that offers hundreds of hours of fun. You may not have heard of it, but Huntdown is an excellent retro-futuristic run-and-gun title that's found tons of success on consoles and PC.
