About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Pokémon Unite is heading to Android this September

It's a MOBA, and it will be "free-to-start"

4
By

The Official Pokémon YouTube channel has announced a new Pokémon game for Android, iOS, and the Nintendo Switch. It's called Pokémon Unite, and it's a MOBA. As you would expect, you'll be tasked with collecting Pokémon as part of the MOBA's team-based online-multiplayer battle arena gameplay. Unsurprisingly, Pokémon Unite is being developed in partnership with Tencent, so I fully expect the game to land as a blatant cash grab, just like Pokémon Café Mix. Clearly, The Pokemon Company is intent on running this franchise through the mud, just so long as it can make a quick buck with lazy clones on mobile. As expected, there is no release date, no talk of target regions, and of course, nobody's mentioned anything about monetization.

The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker is a single-player spin-off of the card game Gwent, out now

After a year, this premium RPG has made its way from iOS to Android

By

The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker is a card-based premium RPG from CD Projekt Red, originally released on PC in 2018. The game is well-reviewed, and it serves as a single-player experience with tweaked gameplay from Gwent. Thanks to the game's popularity, we saw Thronebreaker released on iOS last year. But with how these things go, Android is usually the last platform to join the fun. So while we may be late to the party, as of today, The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker has landed on the Play Store for pre-registration.

Since April, we've known that the popular MMORPG RuneScape would arrive on Android this summer, and Jagex even announced at the beginning of this month that the game would arrive on June 17th. Well, the developer has stayed true to its word, and so RuneScape is finally available on the Google Play Store. This release has been a long time coming, seeing the Jagex originally announced the mobile version of RuneScape back in 2018. Sadly it would seem the wait wasn't worth it as the game is struggling with a host of issues where its Play Store rating has dropped from 4.9 all the way down to 2.6. Ouch.

Northgard is heading to Android next month, pre-register today for 30% off

Expect this popular strategy game to arrive on Android on August 24th for $8.99

Playdigious has just revealed that it's bringing Shiro Games' hit real-time strategy game Northgard to Android and iOS sometime soon. While details are light, the publisher has released a new teaser trailer in celebration of this event.

Battlegrounds Mobile India beta is now live for Android users

If you've played PUBG before, you'll feel right at home

By

PUBG Mobile was banned in India back in 2020 during a spree of Chinese app bans in the country. While it seemed clear the game would return as an Indian variant devoid of the Tencent server issue that caused the game to get banned in the first place, today, Krafton has confirmed the game is returning to the country as Battlegrounds Mobile India.

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. It's the middle of the week, and now that E3 is over, things are a little slow, but luckily I still have some worthwhile sales to share with everyone, including a few standouts. First up is Planescape: Torment, one of the more popular CRPGs out there, and it's currently $8 off. Next up is Slaughter 2: Prison Assault, a well-reviewed third-person shooter. Last but not least is SPHAZE, a gorgeous sci-fi puzzler that's easily worth the current asking price. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 17 temporarily free and 23 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Pokémon GO creator announces Transformers: Heavy Metal, but will it be more than meets the eye?

This could be even more of an explosive mess than the Bay movies

By

To nobody's surprise, Niantic has yet another augmented reality game in the works. This time around, the studio has partnered with Hasbro and TOMY to create a game where players will battle and interact with familiar characters from the Transformers universe. The game is called Transformers: Heavy Metal, and as you would expect, it will utilize Niantic's Lightship AR platform, much like Pokémon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and Ingress Prime.

Opera GX lands on Android as a gaudy browser that targets gamers

You know what's a good browser for gamers to use? Your regular browser

By

Opera has finally brought its GX gaming browser to mobile with the launch of a beta release. While the browser will roll out in a more official manner in a few weeks, if you're eager to take a look, Opera has provided the APK for today's beta launch. Much like the desktop version of the gaming-centric Opera GX browser, the new mobile release offers a homepage dedicated to gaming news and deals.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a popular rhythm-based roguelike, and it has finally arrived on Android. The game was initially released on PC back in 2015 and then made its way to iOS in 2016. For some reason, the developer waited five years to bring the title to Android, but now that it's here, everyone can enjoy this challenging roguelike. You can pick it up for $4.99, and this is a premium release, so you won't have to worry about any in-app purchases or advertisements ruining your fun.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. Even though E3 hogged the news all weekend, we still have a few sales to share with everyone, including a few standouts. First up is Peace Death, a quirky arcade simulator that's perfect for wasting time. Next, I have When Silence Fell, a haunting text adventure that offers branching paths. Last but not least is Draw Chilly, a squad-based action RPG from the same dev as Peace Death. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold green text in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 20 temporarily free and 46 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

By

At this year's E3, Square Enix has announced the follow-up to its successful casual mobile game Hitman: Sniper. It's called Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and this time around, Agent 47 has gone missing, which means you'll have your pick from five brand new characters tasked with saving Agent 47. Unlike the original, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows will be free-to-play. It's slated for release on Android and iOS sometime later this year.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have the official arrival of Albion Online on the Play Store, a new deck builder that offers roguelike mechanics, and a recently translated adventure game that offers many branching paths. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Last night the closed alpha for PUBG: New State kicked off, and thanks to Krafton, I've gained access so that I can show precisely what this alpha brings to the table. I've recorded a full hour of 1080p 60FPS gameplay, spanning three drops into the new Troi map, and I also went out of my way to show all of the game's menus and settings at the start of the video. So if you're curious to see precisely what PUBG: New State's closed alpha has to offer, my lengthy gameplay video should answer all of your questions.

First up is Football Manager 2021 Mobile, Sega's popular soccer management sim, and it's currently $4 off. It took its time, but Albion Online is finally available on the Google Play Store

This popular sandbox MMO no longer has to be sideloaded

4
By

Albion Online comes from many of the people that worked on EVE Online, and so it too is a sandbox MMO, and as you can see in the picture above, it offers a fantasy theme. Back when the game was crowdfunded through founders packs, it was promised that an Android and iOS version would be made. An Android APK has been available since 2017, but the iOS version is still missing. Well, as of today, Sandbox Interactive has announced that the MMO will be officially released on Android and iOS this summer, with cross-play in tow for all platforms.
