About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Don't miss out on the sales for YoWindow Weather, Slaughter 3: The Rebels, and Outsider: After Life

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. Things have slowed a bit, but we still have some quality standouts to share with everyone. First up is YoWindow Weather, a well-reviewed weather app that offers a pleasing UI. Next up is Slaughter 3: The Rebels, a third-person shooter that offers exemplarily graphics. Last but not least is Outsider: After Life, a quirky puzzler that offers some intriguing brain-teasers. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 10 temporarily free and 25 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

If you haven't heard of it, My Time at Portia is an indie farming/life simulation game that offers gameplay similar to Story of Seasons and Animal Crossing, where you'll befriend villagers, plant crops, hunt for loot, and craft all kinds of objects. It's available on consoles and PC, having built up a solid fanbase, and today marks the release on mobile. Best of all, the game is currently on sale, which means you can snag your copy for $5.49 (normally $7.99). Not bad, though there are a few caveats included, which I've detailed below.

Diablo Immortal delayed until 2022, but its most-requested feature might now be on the table

This postponement will allow for improvements, so there is a silver lining

By

Blizzard has been in the news a lot lately, but the company is still plugging along, and so it has published a fresh blog post that covers where Diablo Immortal is headed. Back in May, Blizzard hinted at a 2021 release for the free-to-play action RPG during an earnings call, but it would seem things haven't panned out, and so August's update post states the new plan is to release the game in the first half of 2022. So yes, Diablo Immortal has been delayed, but we've also learned that Blizzard is finally considering controller support (one of the most-requested features during the alpha tests), plus things like PvP and PvE gameplay are touched upon, more than likely for the purpose of illustrating that Blizzard is committed to creating a game worthy of the Diablo name, which is indeed a better direction than asking hardcore gamers if they have phones.

RedMagic 6R long-term review: One-trick pony

A more pocketable and affordable gaming device brought down by software woes

By

Last year, RedMagic refreshed the RedMagic 5G as the RedMagic 5S, but there weren't many differences between the two, raising the question of why the 5S was necessary to begin with. This year, the RedMagic 6 is seeing a significant change with the looming launch of the RedMagic 6R. The 6R has slimmed down significantly while retaining the majority of its high-end gaming features. For $500, you get a Snapdragon 888, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, a quad camera, a 4200mAh battery that supports 30W charging, all in a package that's easily pocketable. The software still stinks, but there's no arguing that this hardware is a stupendous value.

Yesterday we saw a few leaks concerning Realme's upcoming MagDart wireless charging technology, and today marks the official launch, not that Realme has provided a release date or prices just yet. Still, today's announcement is all about Realme showing off its upcoming magnetic wireless charging solutions for Android. As a matter of fact, the company has revealed an entire wireless charging ecosystem, which is why we have a slew of products to reveal below, including the 50W SuperDart wired charger that can fully recharge Realme's concept Flash phone's 4500mAh battery in less than an hour.

A couple of weeks ago, Twitter started testing Google account sign-ins through a beta version of the Android app, giving hope to many of the holdouts waiting for Google account integration. Today, the long-awaited feature has finally gone live inside of the Android app as well as across the web. This means you can now log on or create a fresh Twitter account with your Google details, directly in your browser or the official app, and even Apple users have something to celebrate today since Apple ID sign-in support is coming to the web soon.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. After a game-filled roundup over the weekend, it would seem things have calmed down a bit, but I still have some excellent standouts today. First up is Moon+ Reader Pro, one of the best stand-alone e-reading apps on the platform, and it's currently 50% off. Next up, I have the striking hidden object game Hidden Through Time, which is well worth a playthrough. Last but not least is a sale for Braveland, a reworked version of the classic Tower defense title that offers modern device compatibility. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 22 temporarily free and 29 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Don't miss out on the sales for Space Marshals, Titan Quest, and Golf Peaks

Welcome to Friday, everyone. It's almost the weekend, and so I have some solid dales to share with everyone, including a few noteworthy standouts. First up is Space Marshals, an enjoyable third-person tactical shooter that's currently $3 off. Next, I have Titan Quest, a classic ARPG that was recently updated with controller support. Last but not least is Golf Peaks, a fantastic puzzler themed around the relaxing sport. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 23 temporarily free and 46 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

On July 1st, Square Enix tweeted that the first three Final Fantasy titles would be coming to mobile as remasters on July 29th. Well, it would appear someone has pulled the trigger a little early, and so all three are now available on the Play Store. This is why the original Android ports for I and II are now unlisted, where these remasters are being released as updated replacements that many of us will have to purchase again if we wish to see support. Final Fantasy I and II retail for $11.99, and III is $17.99, which is up there for 20+ year-old games.

NieR Re[in]carnation lands on Android with one small caveat

You can't play yet, but the servers should go live soon

By

We've known for a while that NieR Re[in]carnation would land on Android on July 28th, but thanks to a recent tweet that hinted at a delay, some were left wondering when the game would actually launch. Well, right now, you can indeed install the title from the Play Store, though the servers aren't live just yet, which is why you'll be treated to a splash screen that says as much once you boot into the game. Still, this pop-up states the game will either be playable this afternoon or evening, so NieR Re[in]carnation should go live soon enough.

Dr. Mario's about to lose his medical license

Nintendo will shut down Dr. Mario World on November 1st

By

It looks like all those pills Dr. Mario was prescribing willy-nilly have ended his career. Nintendo has announced that Dr. Mario World isn't long for this world, and so the game will be shut down on November 1st. Starting today, the title's in-game currency (Diamonds) are no longer being sold. Oddly enough, your play history will remain available after Dr. Mario World is shut down, which will be moved to an accessible web page once the servers are offline.

14 temporarily free and 22 on-sale apps and games for Wednesday

Don't miss out on the sales for Lovecraft's Untold Stories, Runic Curse, and Arrog

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. It would appear that things have cooled down for the middle of the week, but I still have a few standouts to share with everyone. First up is Lovecraft's Untold Stories, an enjoyable action roguelite filled to the brim with Lovecraft lore. Next, I have Runic Curse, a solid Metroidvania title that's well worth the current sale price. Last but not least is Arrog, a short puzzle-based adventure game that offers some excellent art. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 14 temporarily free and 22 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

Marvel recently revealed at PAX East 2020 that its next game is coming to mobile as an open-world RPG called Marvel Future Revolution. This title will serve as a follow-up to Netmarble's Marvel: Future Fight (not to be confused with the upcoming sequel for Contest of Champions), but instead of the linear design of the original title, Future Revolution will offer the same action combat wrapped up in an open-world design.

Contra blasts its way onto mobile as a side-scrolling shooter, and so far fans aren't happy

It's called Contra Returns, and we'd all be better off if it hadn't

4
By

Contra is a classic run and gun shooter from Konami that has seen many followups since its debut in 1987 as an arcade game. It would seem Konami saw fit to lend the license to Tencent, so TiMi Studio developed a free-to-play interpretation of the classic sidescrolling shooter. It's called Contra Returns, and it's now available on the Play Store. As you can guess, this is a gacha game that's packed with in-app purchases, as well as a VIP system, and worse yet, user reviews are pretty negative thanks to the game's aggressive permissions.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. After a busy weekend, we're starting off the work week with a solid list of sales, including a few standouts. First up is The House of Da Vinci, a popular escape room game that's easily worth the current sale price. Next, I have Kenshō, a gorgeous and relaxing puzzler. Last but not least is Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins, a mystery game that's well-reviewed thanks to its honest monetization. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 17 temporarily free and 42 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have the arrival of CD Projekt Red's Pokémon GO clone, which of course, offers a Witcher skin. I also have a fantastic adventure game from the creators of 80 Days, as well as an enjoyable indie brawler that's recently found some popularity on Reddit. Don't miss out on the sales for Wayward Souls, Lumino City, and Baldur's Gate II

Welcome to Friday, everyone. We have a packed list today, including some quality standouts. The first title I'd like to point everyone towards is Wayward Souls, a fantastic roguelike that offers tons of replayability. Next, I have Lumino City, a gorgeous point-and-click adventure that offers papercraft art. Last but not least is Baldur's Gate II, one of the best CRPGs ever made. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 33 temporarily free and 67 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

Well, this hardly comes as a surprise, but Ubisoft has announced that its free-to-play action RPG Tom Clancy's Elite Squad is shutting down. Today marks the last update for the title, and its servers will be shuttered on October 4th. Ubisoft says the game is no longer sustainable, which basically means it wasn't making any money. Perhaps this has to do with the heavy pay-to-win mechanics shoved into the title, or maybe it's because of the gacha that didn't offer any waifus? Either way, the game is dead less than a year from its release, which is why it's never a good idea to invest in free-to-play cash-grabs from Ubisoft.
