Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Garena Free Fire MAX brings updated graphics to the popular PUBG clone

There's also a new patch available today

By

Garena Free Fire is an older arena shooter that aped PUBG's gameplay a year before PUBG Mobile was released on mobile platforms. As you can imagine, an arena shooter from 2017 that was rushed out the door to beat PUBG Mobile to market hasn't aged very well, and so the developer has updated the shooter with new HD graphics and gameplay optimizations. This newly-updated version is known as Garena Free Fire MAX, which is officially available starting today.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. It looks like things have cooled off since the weekend. Thankfully I still have some quality sales to share with everyone, including a few standouts. First up is a sale for Ashworld, an enjoyable action-adventure game from OrangePixel. Next, I have Pandemia: Virus Outbreak, a new virus outbreak game that's on sale for the first time this week. Last but not least is Sudoku Ultimate, which is currently available for free. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 11 temporarily free and 25 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today's list is broken up into several segments, ranging from best, average, to mediocre. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have a good port from Square Enix, a lazy port from Square Enix, and a greedy pay-to-win Pokémon game. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Square Enix released Actraiser Renaissance during a recent Nintendo Direct, surprising everyone since this remaster was also revealed for the first time during the Direct release announcement. Great news for Nintendo Switch owners, but even more surprising, Square has launched the game on just about every platform, including Android, which means Actraiser Renaissance is now available on the Google Play Store.

Earlier this month, we learned that Electronic Arts would begin rolling out playtests for the mobile version of Battlefield in autumn. Now that fall is here, the game has entered into early testing in Southeast Asia, so gameplay videos have started to leak online, providing the first look of the Battlefield Mobile in action. So if you've been eager to see what the early alpha gameplay for Battlefield Mobile looks like, we have several enlightening videos to share.

Don't miss out on the sales for Dead Cells, Titan Quest, and Atom RPG

Welcome to Friday, everyone. It's almost the weekend, and so I have a plump sales roundup to share with everyone, including some quality standouts. First up is a sale for Dead Cells, a fantastic roguelike platformer that's currently discounted in celebration of a new DLC release. Next, I have Titan Quest, a solid action RPG that offers controller support. Last but not least is Atom RPG, an indie RPG often compared to classic CRPGs like Fallout. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 34 temporarily free and 55 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

At this point, you'd think free-to-play developers like NetEase would have run out of brands to slap on top of the typical free-to-play genres we're all familiar with, and then a new disappointing announcement comes rolling in. It would appear that NetEase is working on a licensed The Lord of the Rings game, which just popped up on the Play Store for pre-registration. It's called The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, and even though neither the Play Store trailer nor the screenshots show a lick of gameplay, we already know this title will land as a typical free-to-play kingdom builder.

In August, we learned that Pokémon Unite would be making its way from the Nintendo Switch to Android and iOS on September 22nd, which is today. After a brief pre-load period yesterday, Unite's mobile servers are now officially live. This is a free-to-play 5v5 MOBA that offers a slick Pokémon theme, but it's also a Tencent title, and so it's packed with in-app purchases, some of which can be used to gain an advantage over non-paying players, ensuring Pokémon Unite is pay-to-win. Luckily this is a casual MOBA, so the competitive scene is nothing like Dota 2 or League of Legends, dulling the edge of the pay-to-win monetization.

Square Enix just launched a collection of Final Fantasy titles on Android

Final Fantasy Legend I, II, and III are now available on Android

By

Square Enix is notorious for its awful naming schemes, and Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend is one of the worst names yet. Luckily the games within this collection are pretty good. All three RPGs were released on the Game Boy back in the day, known as Final Fantasy titles in the US. But this was back when Square didn't have consistent branding globally, so these games are actually part of the SaGa series. Still, they are great turn-based RPGs in their own right, and they hold up to this day (though these games are pretty challenging). We already know this collection is slated for release on Android on September 22nd, with pre-registration now available for the brand-new Play Store listing.

Indie darling Townscaper is a gorgeous city-builder making the jump from Steam to Android

Arriving in October, and you can pre-register right now

By

Raw Fury released a trailer in March that made it clear that it would be bringing the indie city-builder Townscaper to mobile sometime after the Nintendo Switch release, and today the game has popped up on the Google Play Store for pre-registration. While we still don't have a specific release date, a community trailer released at the end of August revealed the game would arrive on mobile sometime in October, which is only a month away. Clearly, Raw Fury is ramping up for the mobile release of Townscaper with today's pre-registration listing, which means this sandbox city-builder should launch on the platform sooner rather than later.

Dead Cells celebrates new Fatal Falls DLC with a 50% off sale

$3.99 will net you three new biomes to explore

By

Back in March, The Bad Seed DLC made its way to the Android version of Dead Cells, and today there's an all-new DLC available known as Fatal Falls. Much like the previous content expansion, you can pick up Fatal Falls through a single in-app purchase priced at $3.99. This DLC offers three new biomes to explore, along with new monsters, weapons, and bosses. There's also a new custom mode available for free with today's update, and the game is on sale for half-off until September 28th in celebration of today's DLC release.

Pokémon's got a new way to eat up all your free time on Android

The new Trading Card Game app's also coming to iOS, Windows, and macOS

By

The Pokémon Company has announced that it's officially bringing the Pokémon Trading Card Game to Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS sometime soon. This digital adaptation of the popular physical trading card game will be free-to-play, and it will go by the name Pokémon Trading Card Game Live, not to be confused with the pre-existing Android game Pokémon TCG Online, which only runs on tablets. Pokémon Trading Card Game Live is expected to enter testing in Canada on mobile devices sometime soon, with a global launch on Windows and macOS later in the year.

Niantic calls it quits on its Settlers of Catan AR game

Catan – World Explorers set to wind down over the coming months

By

Back in June 2020, Niantic announced Catan – World Explorers, an augmented reality map exploration game in the same vein as Pokémon GO, the developer's bread and butter. Catan, of course, is a popular board game that's had several digital adaptations published on the Play Store, and it would seem Niantic was chomping at the bit to utilize its AR platform to turn the entire world into a Catan gameboard, but this has not panned out. Thanks to a recent blog post, we now know Niantic plans to sunset Catan – World Explorers on November 18th. Luckily, the game never made it out of testing, and so only those living in the game's soft-launch regions will be affected.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. After a busy weekend, sales have slowed down a bit, but I still have some quality standouts to share with everyone. First up is Johnny Bonasera 1, a humorous point-and-click adventure where you'll get to stick it to the bullies plaguing the main character. Next, I have Three Kingdoms The Last Warlord, a solid turn-based strategy game themed around Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Last but not least is Space Grunts, a fantastic roguelike that's great in short bursts. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 26 temporarily free and 35 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android games that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. So whether you're looking for the best games of quality or are simply looking for the latest free-to-play gacha titles, you're covered. This week I have a unique deck-building game themed around rats protecting their enclave, a trippy point and click adventure game that offers interesting art, and a quirky adventure game that's perfect for Halloween. So without further ado, here are the new and notable Android games released during the last week.

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous week or so. Today I have a slick media bar app, a radio app where you can roll your own station, and a barcode app for creating, scanning, and storing barcodes. So without further ado, here are all of the new and notable Android apps released on the Play Store in the last week.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. It's a busy day for sales, which means I have some quality standouts. First up is Hidden Folks, a fantastic hidden object game that offers unique black and white graphics. Next, I have My Child Lebensborn, a heartfelt story-driven game that deals with the aftermath of WW2. Last but not least is Farm Invasion USA, a whacky auto-runner that's easy to pick up and play. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 28 temporarily free and 57 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

The Wipeout series finally lives up to its name with this embarrassment of a card game

A racing game without any actual racing. Sounds like a winner!

By

IGN has just revealed that Rogue Games plans to publish a new Wipeout racing game for mobile called Wipeout Rush, but it's not a typical futuristic racer. Nope, it's a card game disguised as a racer, and early screens have already revealed that there are multiple currencies as well as a stamina system, and so fans are rightfully upset. Wipeout Rush should is slated for release sometime in 2022, and there's a trailer available if you'd like to take an early look.

Don't miss out on the sales for Doom & Destiny Advanced, DISTRAINT: Deluxe Edition, and Hello Human

By

Welcome to Wednesday, everyone. It's the middle of the week when things tend to get slow, but I still have some awesome sales to share with everyone, including a few standouts. First up is Doom & Destiny Advanced, a solid RPG that offers a goofy sense of humor. Next I have Distraint, a horror adventure that offers some excellent puzzles. Last but not least is Hello Human, a quirky indie puzzler somewhat similar to The Stanley Parable. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 22 temporarily free and 25 on-sale apps and games for the middle of the week.

The new Star Wars: Hunters trailer pits Mandalorian against Sith

It's a free-to-play 4x4 arena combat game from Zynga, coming 2022

4
By

During a recent Nintendo Direct, Zynga has revealed that it's working on a free-to-play Star Wars game for the Nintendo Switch as well as mobile platforms like Android and iOS. The game is called Star Wars: Hunters, and it's coming to mobile this year. It's described as a competitive arena combat game that should offer real-time cross-play squad battles, though Zynga hasn't actually shown off any gameplay despite releasing a teaser trailer. Still, it seems clear Zynga is creating a Fortnite clone with a Star Wars skin, which is difficult to get excited about.
