About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Welcome to our Black Friday sales roundup for 2021, everyone. It's the busiest sales day of the year, and boy, do I have a ton of Play Store app and game sales to share with everyone, including a bunch of excellent standouts. First up is a decent sale on the full unlock for the wildly popular music player Poweramp. Next, I have a drastic discount on the digital audio workstation app Cubasis 3. Last but not least is a solid sale on FBReader Premium, a robust and well-reviewed e-reading app. Oh, and Square Enix has three SaGa games on sale today, titles that are rarely discounted. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are the best temporarily free and on-sale apps and games for Black Friday 2021.

Star Wars Hunters first look hero

Back in February, Zynga and Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Hunters, a 4x4 arena shooter in the same vein as Overwatch. Over the months, development continued, and this past September, we learned that Star Wars: Hunters would be officially released sometime in 2022. As Zynga gears up for this release, the title has started popping up in soft-launch in a few exclusive territories. Luckily I was able to sideload the title to take it for a spin, and so I've recorded a 30-minute gameplay video that not only explores the game's settings but also dives into its arena shooting gameplay. So if you've been eager to see exactly what Star Wars: Hunters has to offer, you're in luck, as that's what today's post is all about.

Acer Chromebook CB317-1HT review hero
Acer Chromebook 317 review: Large and in charge

When a large screen is a must, Acer is the only game in town

4
By

The Acer Chromebook 317 is gargantuan, and that's not an exaggeration. It's literally the largest Chromebook on the market, thanks to its 17.3-inch screen. It's only been a few months since the original CB317-1H was released. The newly-launched unit covered in this review is the CB317-1HT. This model is a refresh of the original that packs double the RAM at 8GB, a new power-efficient Pentium Silver N6000 processor, and an IPS 1080p touchscreen. These improvements make it a great Chromebook, but they come with a price jump: the CB317-1HT retails for $500, which is $100 more than the original 317.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. We're inching ever-closer to Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and so there are plenty of sales available as we enter the weekend, including some noteworthy games and apps. First up is a solid discount on KORG's Kaossilator synthesizer app. Next, I have a sale for Exploding Kittens, a popular game that plays like Russian Roulette. Last but not least is Out There: Ω Edition, a roguelike space exploration game similar to Space Truckers or FTL. So without further ado, here are 36 temporarily free and 101 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

Alien Isolation mobile port anouncement hero
The best Alien game is coming to mobile, thanks to Feral Interactive

Alien: Isolation is set to launch on Android and iOS on December 16th

4
By

Feral Interactive is the studio behind some of Android's best ports, and it has announced that it will bring Alien: Isolation to Android and iOS on December 16th. Even though there are some horrible Alien games out there, Isolation stands on its own, thanks to the detailed work of the developer Creative Assembly, who took the time to mimic the sounds and look of the first Alien film to create something truly special. Not only has this survival horror game won tons of awards, but it's also a fitting entry in the Alien universe with a story that explores the events that took place between the first two films.

Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier release hero
That Final Fantasy battle royale shooter you never asked for is out now

Or maybe you did, since the servers are already overloaded

4
By

We've known about Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier since Square Enix announced the battle royale game back in February. In June, the first closed beta tests started rolling out, and despite minor tweaks to the typical gameplay setup, there's no doubt The First Soldier plays like any other battle royale. So yes, Square has hopped on the bandwagon to offer its very own PUBG clone for mobile, and today is the official release. So far, the servers are getting hammered, but Square is aware of the connectivity problem and is actively working on these network issues, which is why the game has just entered into a maintenance mode.

Moncage release hero
Clever perspective puzzler Moncage is now available on Android

Indie dev Optillusion's promising debut, now pocket-size

4
By

Optillusion is a new indie developer that just released its first game today, and it's a doozy. This game is called Moncage, and it's a drop-dead gorgeous puzzler that offers a uniquely interesting mechanic. You see, the whole game takes place in a cube that you can rotate, and each side offers unique imagery. In order to solve the game's puzzles, you'll rotate this cube to line up the perspective of the cube's imagery. The goal? To collect photos of your perfectly aligned imagery, which reveals the story of the game. Moncage is an interactive optical illusion puzzle game, and not only is the presentation superb, but the gameplay is also a hoot that's perfect for play on a touchscreen.

PUBG MOBILE 1.7 patch hero

It would appear the PUBG Mobile update cycle is now seeing patches land every two months, with the previous 1.6 patch arriving in September, and of course, the 1.7 patch is launching today. As expected, there are many changes introduced in the new 1.7 update, including the addition of Mirror Island. This is a floating island where players will take on the roles of characters from League of Legends’ official animated Netflix series Arcane, all to battle with other players as the secrets of Arcane are revealed. Beyond the new content, a few older modes are returning, and some combat changes/rebalancing is also in the mix.

Back in March, Psyonix announced a mobile version of Rocket League, known as Rocket League Sideswipe (not to be confused with the mainline version rumored to be coming to Android). It's a 2D affair that plays better than you'd think, and it just started rolling out in Oceania today. This launch marks the start of a Pre-Season, with a wider rollout for the globe planned soon, though there's no word specifically when this will happen. For now, we'll all have to envy those living in Oceania who can jump directly into this competitive car-based soccer game.

Welcome to Monday, everyone. Thanks to a busy weekend, we have a plump list of sales today, including some noteworthy games. First up is Florence, a well-reviewed casual story-rich adventure game. Next, I have 911 Operator, a popular 911 simulation game where you fill the role of a 911 operator. Last but not least is Dungeon Warfare, an older but still enjoyable tower defense game. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 26 temporarily free and 52 on-sale apps and games for the beginning of the week.

Welcome to Friday, everyone. We have a plump list of sales today, including some noteworthy games. First up is The Escapists, a popular prison breakout game from Team 17. Next, I have Titan Quest, an older but solid action RPG similar to the classic Diablo titles. Last but not least is Kingdom Two Crowns, a colony simulation game where you'll build a kingdom by recruiting loyal subjects. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So without further ado, here are 42 temporarily free and 59 on-sale apps and games for the end of the week.

Onyx Boox Nova3 Color review: Color me happy

A surprisingly useful E Ink e-reader that's also a handy Android tablet

4
By

Color e-ink is still far less capable than LCD and OLED, thanks to long refresh times and washed-out colors. So the Onyx Boox Nova3 Color might not be on everyone's radar. The 7.8-inch color screen is too small to read magazines and comic books comfortably, vastly limiting the usefulness of a color screen, but the Nova3 Color is still a capable e-reader for books. The built-in reading app offers a robust selection of settings, which is why text-based e-books format nicely on the screen. Plus, there are tons of benefits from the included Android app support, and the note-taking options are robust too.

PUBG NEW STATE android release
PUBG: New State is finally available for Android, off to a pretty rough start

Release day woes mar the launch of Krafton's latest battle royale

4
By

At the beginning of 2021, Krafton announced that it was working on a mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds called PUBG: New State. After much testing over the last year, we learned last month that the battle royale was finally ready for prime time, with the official release set for November 11th. Well, that day is today, and so PUBG: New State is now available on the Google Play Store as a free-to-play download. So far, player reviews are middling, with plenty of complaints sprinkled throughout the current 3.7 rating, covering issues like random server disconnects and lag, though to be fair, it is release day, as these kinds of problems tend to be expected.

Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster release date hero
The Final Fantasy V pixel remaster is out now on the Play Store

Coming to mobile and PC on November 10th

4
By

Square Enix has been slowly releasing remasters of the first six Final Fantasy titles across mobile and PC for the last few months. The last game to be released was the fourth in the series, which landed in September. This means the fifth game is next, and Square has confirmed the release date. The Final Fantasy V pixel remaster is set to arrive on Steam and mobile early next month. On November 10th, to be exact.

Sparklite android release hero

Sparklite is an adventure game from 2019 that's often compared to the original Zelda titles, thanks to its top-down view and puzzle-filled dungeons. A similar whimsical style permeates the game, though it's a roguelike, where you'll make incremental advancement through the game's procedurally generated world. Death (called feinting in this game) is a constant, but the penalties aren't very harsh. This is what makes Sparklite an exceptional port that suits mobile play very well, and in celebration of the game's launch on Android, you can snag a copy for 30% off the retail price.
