About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

It's Friday, everyone, which means it's almost the weekend, so it's time to check out the best Android app sales and the best Android game sales from the past week to get everyone prepped for the weekend. Of course, I have a few standouts to share with everyone. First up is Botanicula, an excellent adventure game from Amanita Design. Next, I have Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, which is one of the best CRPGs ever made. Last but not least, Titan Quest: Legendary Edition is a fantastic ARPG that's complete with all DLC. As always, I've highlighted all of the interesting titles in bold in order to make discovery easier. So dig in, and enjoy!

SteelSeries Stratus+ gfn hero

One of the best controllers on Android has just gotten a little better. The SteelSeries Stratus Duo is our Editor's Choice here at AP, and SteelSeries has just updated the Stratus Duo, now called the Stratus+, and just like its predecessor, the Stratus+ is part of the GeForce Now Recommended program, so says Nvidia in its weekly GFN Thursday announcement. While much hasn't changed between the Stratus Duo and the Stratus+, gamers can expect the phone clip to now ship in the box (it used to be a separate purchase), with a fresh redesign to the clip that makes it easier to attach to the controller and smartphone.

The Bard's Tale WoL hero (1)

The Bard's Tale is a classic RPG from 2004 that made its way to Android as a port in 2012, published by its creators, inXile entertainment. Sadly the game hasn't been updated since 2015, but there's a brand new The Bard's Tale that just popped up on the Play Store, published by Wanderword, and it's called The Bard's Tale – Warlocks of Largefearn. You may have heard of this game as it was initially released on smart speakers as a voice-controlled game. Well, graphics have been added to the title, and so it's now available on the Google Play Store as a legit mobile game.

Nubia isn’t well-known in the US, but it’s been pushing out new gaming phones each year under its RedMagic brand, and the RedMagic 7 is the newest offering from the company. It packs the latest Snapdragon along with tons of RAM and the phone’s signature internal cooling fan, going toe-to-toe against giants at a fraction of the price.

Kabam, the developer behind Marvel Contest of Champions and Transformers: Forged to Fight has a fresh game available for pre-registration on the Play Store, and it's a Disney game themed around the Mirrorverse. As you would imagine, this divergent Disney universe allows Disney and Pixar characters to deviate from their traditional lore, which is precisely how you create a collectible gacha game where every character is empowered to fight against the evil force known as the Fractured. This game is known as Disney Mirrorverse, and it's coming to mobile in June, with pre-registration starting today.

Dead Cells The Queen and the Sea DLC hero
Dead Cells newest DLC The Queen and the Sea is coming to mobile soon

A new training mode and collectible outfits are also incoming

By

Late last year the Android version of Dead Cells saw the release of Fatal Falls DLC, bringing new biomes, monsters, and weapons to the game. This was the second DLC to launch for the roguelike platformer in the same year, so it's no surprise to learn more DLC is incoming, known as The Queen and the Sea. Well, as of today it's official, this upcoming DLC will launch on April 7th for $3.99, and this time around you'll slice and dice your way through a dilapidated shipwreck and a fiery lighthouse.

The impermanence of mobile games is frightfully apparent whenever titles less than five years old are shut down at random. The latest title gearing up to join the mobile gaming graveyard is Nintendo's gacha game Dragalia Lost. The RPG initially landed on mobile back in 2018, offering bite-sized action-RPG combat. Well, seeing that the game is now four years old, the player base has dwindled to the point it's no longer profitable for Nintendo to keep the game running. Cue today's announcement that Dragalia Lost's last campaign begins on March 31st, concluding this July, with the game's end date still up in the air but coming all the same.

We've known that Apex Legends Mobile would be coming to Android since April of 2021, and this past February, the game entered into pre-registration on the Play Store in a few select regions. Well, today, pre-registration opens up around the globe, which means Electronic Arts is gearing up for a worldwide release sometime soon. Those that pre-register will earn a few in-game rewards once the game launches, though the exact release date is still unknown.

ECHOES of MANA hero

Last summer, Square Enix celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Mana action-RPG series, announcing that Trials of Mana would come to the platform (having launched in July 2021), along with a brand-new title in the series called Echoes of Mana. Well, as of this morning, Echoes of Mana is available on the Google Play Store for pre-registration. Sticking to the series ARPG roots, Echoes of Mana is a 2D action RPG, and this time around, you're on the hunt for the Mana Sword in order to save the Mana Tree.

Total War MEDIEVAL II hero mobile port announcement

Seeing that Feral Interactive already ported Creative Assembly's 2006 strategy game Total War: Medieval II to Linux and macOS back in 2016, it makes sense that Feral would pull from its back catalog for its Android and iOS ports. And so the next mobile port from Feral Interactive is Total War: Medieval II, slated for a spring release. Feral's last foray onto mobile was the fantastic port for Alien Isolation, and since Feral has such an excellent track record launching some of the best Android games out there, there's a good chance the mobile port of Total War: Medieval II will also be great.

PUBG Mobile update 19 hero

It would appear that PUBG Mobile updates are now on a two-month cadence, with the 1.8 update landing this past January. Well, March marks two months, and on top of that, this month is actually the fourth anniversary of the game, which means it's time for a Vibrant Anniversary event, which coincidentally gives the game a Fortnite vibe. Today's update also brings with it colorful bicycles, new camps, and plenty of improvements, rounding out PUBG Mobile's 1.9 update.

Today is the Google for Games Developer Summit, so there's some fresh gaming news to dig into (like the Steam alpha for Chrome OS reveal), and this includes Stadia. Up until this point, a Stadia account is needed to test the majority of games on the Stadia store. Sure, there have been a few free weekends and other promotions excluded from the need to use a credit card to create an account, but as you can imagine, this roadblock has been an issue for many since Stadia's inception. Well, soon enough, an account won't be required to peruse the Stadia store or test its games, so says Caren Yapp (Strategic Business Development) during the Stadia keynote at the tail end of the Google for Games Developer Summit, which is indeed excellent news.

CALL OF DUTY WARZONE FOR MOBILE announcement hero
Call of Duty's bringing more battle royale action to Android with Warzone

And Activision is actively hiring for the game

4
By

Activision has announced its plans to create a new large-scale Call of Duty game for mobile. Much like Call of Duty Mobile, this upcoming game is also a battle royale title, though this time around, the entire focus is on battle royale gameplay, and that's because this upcoming game is will exist as a native mobile interpretation of Call of Duty: Warzone. What's crazy is that Activision has announced the game in tandem with announcing that the company is looking to hire people to work on the title (and there's a laundry list of positions), which means the mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone is nowhere even close to ready, so it would seem zero lessons were learned from Blizzard (a subsidiary of Activision) announcing Diablo Immortal several years too early.

Dawn of Ragnarök update stadia hero

Since the start, Ubisoft has been at the forefront of Stadia's releases. Even with Stadia's uneven footing in 2022, things are still trucking along with new games incoming from multiple developers. Still, Ubisoft is easily one of the most active developers on Stadia, and so it comes as no surprise that Assassin's Creed Valhalla's newest expansion, Dawn of Ragnarök, is now available on the Stadia store, with Discovery Tour - Viking Age coming soon. But that's not all; Ubisoft has also announced that Trivial Pursuit: Live! is landing this month and that Rainbow Six Siege's new season Demon Veil starts next week.
