About Matthew Sholtz

Matthew is the Games and Apps Editor at Android Police. He's been gaming since his first taste of a TI-99 at four years old. Matthew has been an Android user since the HTC Hero and has covered roundups, reviews, and daily mobile game news for over a decade. He's a person who holds a peculiar yet deep interest in all things to do with handheld gaming and constantly pushes to advance the state of the mobile industry beyond the bounds of its predatory monetization obsession.

Matthew is a furious nitpicker and something of an (albeit amusing) curmudgeon, a writer who can instantly find fault in just about anything, yet he chooses to wield this power for good from the comfort of his armchair to ensure the best Android games and apps aren't lost to obscurity.

Will Blizzard finally reveal the game's release date?

4
By

It's no secret that Diablo Immortal was stuck in development for the last four years after a particularly rememberable announcement at BlizzCon 2018 to a jeering audience. In the following years, an alpha and beta passed us by, and in that time, Blizzard has been busy continually polishing the game, and so it would appear that we are finally reaching endgame, as Blizzard has announced through a recent tweet that it will be holding a YouTube Premiere event this morning, Monday, April 25th.

Turnip Boy pre-reg hero

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a popular indie Zelda-like that initially launched on consoles and PC, and the game recently landed on Xbox Game Pass. Here's the thing, as of this morning, Turnip Boy popped up on the Google Play Store for pre-registration, which means the game is coming to Android. This is a title that offers an amusing, offbeat adventure about a turnip causing havoc in its community, as it hasn't paid its taxes, setting up the game's adventure where you'll explore dungeons in an effort to pay back those taxes.

Front Mission is a tactical RPG series from Square Enix that dates back to 1995 as a Super Famicom release, which eventually made its way West as a Nintendo DS title. Over the years, the series has seen many entries, including a couple of mobile games released exclusively in Japan under the 2089 moniker. Well, it would appear that Square isn't done with the 2089 mobile offshoots and is bringing the series West, and so the company has released an official concept trailer for a new game known as Front Mission 2089: Borderscape, along with a handful of social media accounts and a website that already offers pre-registration.

This past January, we learned that the latest iteration in the popular Torchlight action RPG series would be coming to mobile, with the first closed beta kicking off that month. I went hands-on with the initial beta and came away rather impressed. The game is still in active development, and a second closed beta will kick off on April 25, which means you have four days to toss your hat in the ring if you'd like to participate in the upcoming closed beta.

Every Thursday, Nvidia announces the new games coming to its GeForce Now game streaming platform, and this week the company has a doozy. God of War is officially launching on GeForce Now, along with eight other titles, including MotoGP22 and Twin Mirror. Of course, God of War is the star of the show, and it supports gameplay at up to 1440p at 120 FPS on PC, and even mobile users can take advantage of high frame rate support at 120 FPS, though a subscription to the RTX 3080 membership will be required to hit those high frames and resolutions.

You might not have heard of EndCycle VS since it's existed in early access on Steam up to this point, but today is release day, and this release encompasses not only PC but also Android. This is a release inspired by Mega Man Battle Network, a well-received collectible card game series, and much like its inspiration, you'll build out a unique deck in EndCycle VS to take on plenty of baddies. Seeing that EndCycle VS also offers roguelike gameplay, no two sessions play exactly the same, and with a heavy focus on multiplayer, this is a game that's also great online.

Ni no Kuni Cross Worlds global announcement android hero

Netmarble launched Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan last June, and it appears that the game was a success earning $100 million in its first 11 days, so the mobile MMORPG is going global this summer. This is a game that contains animated cutscenes from Studio Ghibli (the exceptional artists behind such films as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro), just like the mainline Ni no Kuni console and PC games, so expect an excellent art direction.

Exploding Kittens - The Game announcement hero

Netflix has been busy growing its gaming library, purchasing a few studios along the way in an effort to offer the "best gaming service available." Indeed, a challenging task, though Netflix is still full steam ahead with today's announcement. In May, the company will bring an exclusive version of the popular party game Exploding Kittens to its gaming service. But that's not all; this fresh game release will be paired with an animated series coming to the video streaming side in 2023, providing a glimpse of how Netflix will more than likely integrate both games and video content on its service moving forward.

There's a new game coming from Daniel Lutz, who just so happened to be the creative director of Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO. It's called Isle of Arrows, and it's a strategy board game that offers a similar art style to the GO games. Seeing that Lutz is now operating as an indie developer under the studio name Gridpop, Isle of Arrows will land as an independent release on Android, iOS, and Steam sometime this summer. So if you were a fan of the Square Enix's GO titles, keep your eyes on the upcoming release for Isle of Arrows.

Peridot announcement hero

Niantic has just announced a brand-new collection-based augmented reality game. Seeing that this is just about the only style of game the developer creates, it comes as no surprise. What is surprising is that there's no brand attached; this is a fresh creation directly from Niantic, known as Peridot, and it would appear that pet rearing is a focus. Peridot offers Tamagotchi-like mechanics where you'll raise and unlock new forms of adorable pets, combined with daily walks, and it will enter soft-launch on Android and iOS sometime soon.

Back in 2020, we saw two Danganronpamurder-mystery games released on Android as part of a tenth-anniversary celebration for the quirky visual novels. Of course, the third game was also part of this plan but had been missing in action for the last two years. Well, as of this morning, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is now available on Android, completing the trilogy on the platform.

RedMagic 7 Pro global release announcement hero

Each year Nubia launches at least two lines of gaming smartphones within its RedMagic brand, a regular model towards the beginning of the year and a Pro model that follows sometime later. Seeing that the RedMagic 7 Pro was already announced for China back in February, the phone's going global now that the standard RedMagic 7 has been available across the globe since March. Early birds can snag the RedMagic 7 Pro starting today, though the gaming phone will be officially available in the West on April 27th.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link announcement hero

Square Enix held a 20th-anniversary event for Kingdom Hearts over the weekend and subsequently released a trailer for three games. The first trailer is for Kingdom Hearts Uχ Dark Road, which will be concluding its story this year, and the third trailer reveals Kingdom Hearts 4 is in the works, a mainline entry. These are fine announcements on their own, but the second trailer is why we're here, teasing an all-new mobile game in the franchise, known as Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. Details are incredibly light, though it looks like an action RPG, and should be entering into closed beta testing in select regions this year.

Kombinera hero

Atari was once a well-known name in gaming, but at this point, the company is coasting on name recognition alone, floating ideas like hotels and cryptocurrency as new money-making schemes for the brand. Still, games are what people expect from Atari, and it would appear a new title is in the works, co-developer by Atari, and it actually looks pretty good. The game is called Kombinera, and it's a puzzle platformer with simple graphics that indeed looks like a proper Atari game.

At the tail end of March, we learned that Dead Cells' latest DLC, The Queen and the Sea, would launch on Android on April 7th. Well, that day is today, and so this DLC is now available, just as promised. Much like the previous DLCs for the game, today's release is priced at $3.99 and can be acquired through an in-app purchase. Of course, the content within today's DLC is the star of the show, so fans can expect a bunch of new sea-themed content to explore, including a dilapidated shipwreck and a fiery lighthouse.

Rocket League Sideswipe season 3 hero

Back in February, Rocket League Sideswipe's second season landed on Android, bringing causal playlists to the game. Well, it would appear that Psyonix is currently on a bi-monthly cadence, releasing a new season every couple of months, and so season 3 is officially here. Up to this point, 2v2 matches were the primary focus, but today you can finally jump into 3v3 matches with five other players. Along with the addition of a new 3v3 mode, a new arena is in the mix as well as a fresh spectator mode, plus there's a new Rocket Pass for those looking to earn some extra rewards.

By

Plenty of shooters have come and gone on mobile over the years, though there's definitely a resurgence thanks to the success of battle royales like PUBG and Fortnite, ushering in a new era of mobile shooting games like Call of Duty Mobile. Seeing that even Electronic Arts is looking to join in on the fun with the eventual arrival of Battlefield on mobile (let's not forget EA is also bringing Apex Legends to mobile this year), it makes sense Ubisoft would also be eager to jump on the money train before it grows stale, and so the studio has just announced that it will bring an exclusive version of Rainbow Six to both Android and iOS in 2022.

Rovio Classics Angry Birds release hero

The original Angry Birds dates back to 2009 as an iOS release, and the game was a huge hit thanks to cute graphics and accessible slingshot-based controls. After this breakout success, the game was ported to a multitude of platforms, including Android, and it ran for years receiving new content. Well, thanks to the #BringBack2012 Twitter hashtag campaign, Rovio took note that the preferred rendition of the classic game was the 2012 version, which offered eight Angry Birds episodes (over 390 levels), and so the company has recreated this version for modern devices, known as Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, which is officially available on the Play Store starting today.

Where's the incentive for non-PlayStation owners?

Game streaming is seemingly here to stay, with just about everyone tossing their hat in the ring to gain early footing. While Stadia and GeForce Now may be the first streaming services that come to mind, Microsoft has diligently built out its own streaming service through its Xbox Cloud Gaming (still in beta) service paired with Xbox Game Pass. So, of course, Sony had to get in on the fun, and even though the company has been trailing behind the competition with PlayStation Now, rumors have been flying about new streaming setup from Sony. Well, today, we finally learned how Sony plans to implement its latest game streaming tech. It will do so by combining its PlayStation Now and Plus services into three tiers of PlayStation Plus, with the last tier offering game streaming across PS4, PS5, and PC, though mobile support is noticeably absent.
