About Jesse Hollington

Jesse is a lifelong technology enthusiast who has been exploring smartphones and mobile tech for more than two decades. He began his career as a computer tech in a small Canadian town in Northern Ontario, quickly moving into network systems integration and then running his own small consulting practice doing network support and project management for government, legal, and corporate clients in Toronto, Canada, where he still resides.

Jesse started a career change into tech journalism in 2007 with iLounge where he handled roundups and reviews of smartphones, mobile apps, headphones, speakers, smart home devices, and more. He's since written for iDrop News, Lifewire, SlashGear, and Digital Trends. He's also authored three editions of iPod & iTunes Portable Genius for Wiley Publishing.

While Jesse remains strongly immersed in the Apple ecosystem, you'll commonly find him rocking both an iPhone and a Pixel at the same time, where he likes to live on the edge with the latest iOS and Android betas. His tricked-out smart home also responds equally well to "Hey Siri," "Alexa", and "OK Google."

What was your first phone and what do you remember about it?

I'm probably dating myself here, but my first cell phone was a Motorola MicroTAC. That was long before smartphones were a thing, but I'd always dreamed of living in a more connected world and jumped on the Qualcomm pdQ-1900 when it came along. It was a clunky combo of a Palm device and a CDMA phone that relied on what was effectively a dial-up connection to get online. Still, the idea of being able to get to the web and chat in those days (on ICQ) was downright magical.

How long have you been interested in technology?

I can't remember a time when I wasn't interested in technology. I was that kid who hung out in the local Radio Shack learning programming on TRS-80s while my mom was shopping. I've been on the internet since before most people knew there was an internet, running my own BBS as a teenager and dialing into the local university with my 1200 baud modem to get onto Usenet.

With so many amazing smartphones on the market today, it can be challenging enough to pick the best one for your needs even without also worrying about protection from the elements. However, if you’re an outdoor adventure enthusiast, getting a phone that can handle exposure to water should also be a priority. Whether that’s simply taking a dunk over the side of your boat or being able to withstand the rigors of water sports, the last thing you want is to find your expensive smartphone acting up from water getting inside.

There’s never been a better time to consider buying an affordable smartphone. As technology improves, more powerful midrange chips have blurred the lines between budget phones and flagships in a way that would have been unthinkable only a few short years ago.

There’s a growing market for affordable true wireless earbuds that can still deliver solid sound quality while not skimping on additional features like active noise cancellation. Over the past year, we’ve seen some interesting new entries in the sub-$100 price range from Samsung, Jabra, Sony, and even boutique brands like Cambridge Audio. Now, OnePlus is throwing its hat into the ring with the OnePlus Buds 3, a set of midrange earbuds that sit between the company’s almost ridiculously inexpensive Nord Buds 2 and its flagship OnePlus Buds Pro 2.

Google's Pixel 7a is a remarkably powerful budget Android phone; it packs in the same Tensor G2 chip as the pricier Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, outdone only by Google's more recently released Pixel 8 lineup. In addition to the sophisticated AI and computational photography features the Pixel phones have become famous for, you're also getting a 90Hz full-HD OLED display, a great camera system, and some fun new colors.

Nothing beats the freedom of wire-free listening, and we here at Android Police are major fans of all things Bluetooth. One of the best ways to enjoy the many music-streaming platforms out there is with a portable Bluetooth speaker. Far more than loud and proud drivers, the best Bluetooth speakers include sweet features like top-shelf weatherproofing, intuitive companion apps for phones or tablets, and even integrated voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant.

It may be hard to believe today, but there was once a time when a 6-inch smartphone was considered massive. However, as manufacturers built more sophisticated and powerful camera systems and customers demanded more screen real estate, battery life, and power, the 6.5-inch+ screens that once graced only those smartphones facetiously referred to as "phablets" have become the norm rather than the exception. Today, most of the best Android phones are in this larger size range, and while they offer some incredible features and gorgeous screens, sometimes a 6.7-inch phone is just too much.

In this day of modern always-connected smartphones, it’s fair to say that the built-in navigation systems in most cars have become passé. After all, Google Maps can provide so much more detailed and current information on where you want to go, plus reliable and up-to-the-minute traffic information sourced from hundreds of drivers along your route.

Best smart speakers with clocks in 2024

Why ask for the time when you could just see it on these smart speakers?

Smart speakers are a dime a dozen these days, and we're not complaining. From Google to Amazon (and let's not forget the many third-party offerings), you can use a smart speaker to control and automate your smart home devices, listen to music, make phone calls, and so much more. But aside from asking Google Assistant or Alexa what time it is, not many of these devices have integrated LED clocks.

Samsung's Galaxy A15 is proof that even budget smartphones can deliver great value. While it's at the other end of the spectrum from the premium Galaxy S24 lineup, not everyone needs all the bells and whistles of Samsung's flagships, and the company's A-series phones provide plentiful options for folks looking for a smartphone that will go easier on their wallet.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is a solid upgrade over the Watch 5 and Watch 4 that came before it. The screen is bigger despite the fact the watch itself is the same overall size, and the new Exynos W930 is a cracking processor. The Watch 6 doesn't have the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic's rotating bezel, but it has a digital version that replicates that functionality. It's easy to see why the Watch 6 is one of the best smartwatches right now.

Boasting many features usually reserved for higher-end devices, the Galaxy A54 has quickly cemented its place among the best affordable Android phones. Though budget-friendly, Samsung elevated the A-series experience by adorning the A54 with a stunning glass back. But such a stylish feature comes with some risk.

If you’ve purchased or rented a new car in the past five years or so, there’s a good chance it supports Android Auto, Google’s smartphone projection system that lets you put Google Maps and other Android apps up on your dashboard in a way that’s vastly superior to the infotainment systems found in most vehicles.

Motorola has long been known for making a well-rounded, competent smartphone lineup that, with few exceptions, has often been regarded as somewhat bland. However, this all changed in 2023 when the company upped its game with a pair of fun and flashy foldables and a refreshing new flagship, the Motorola Edge+ (2023).

Today, many vehicles support Android Auto, letting you project Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, or whatever other apps you want to hit the road on your in-vehicle display. However, while it's not hard to find a car that includes Android Auto, most still require you to plug your phone in with a USB cable; standard Bluetooth systems don't have the bandwidth to pull it off, so you either need a higher-end trim with built-in Wi-Fi or a wireless Android Auto adapter to bridge the gap. That's where the Carlinkit 5.0 comes in.

Sony is known for making some of the best noise-cancelling headphones on the market, with the class-leading Sony WH-1000XM5 being merely the latest in a long lineup of perennial favorites. However, those are far from the only over-ear cans the company makes; it may surprise you to learn that Sony has a broad headphone lineup, with something for every budget. Keeping with Sony's audio reputation, its entire headphone collection delivers impressive sound quality for each price point, plus a comfortable and lightweight fit and class-leading battery life.

Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S24 lineup earlier than usual this year, delivering its 2024 flagships only eleven months after their respective predecessors. While some of this year’s Galaxy S24 models will undoubtedly rank among the best Samsung phones of the year, Samsung’s plus-series phones often find themselves as the awkward middle children of the family — even though they’re usually the sweetest spot in the lineup.

Google Pixel Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S8

The Google Pixel Tablet is the first Android-powered tablet out of Mountain View since the 2015 Pixel C. Although Google made an interim attempt at rolling out a tablet in 2018 with the Chrome OS-powered Pixel Slate, the Pixel Tablet integrates much better with Google's hardware ecosystem. It isn't perfect, but it's still one of our favorite Android tablets.

Last year's Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable came as a slick addition to an already powerful lineup. The phone includes some exciting upgrades, like a new 3.4-inch cover screen that delivers quick updates and information at just a glance. Even with the signature flip function acting as a point of focus, this front screen buff should make the exterior window far more useful, reducing the need to actually open your flipper.

echo dot 5th gen vs echo dot with clock image matchup

If you're looking for an affordable voice assistant, Amazon's Echo Dot models are among the best smart speakers you can buy. While they don't provide the kind of sound quality that will make you want to use them as primary speakers, they're affordable enough that you can drop one in nearly every room, so you can call on Alexa from anywhere in your home.
