HTC Officially Unveils The One Max: 5.9 Inches
It's been leaked more than a few times, but early this morning HTC finally took the rather large wraps off the One max. The new phone is essentially a supersized version of the HTC One stretched out to a massive 5.9 inches. HTC hasn't been sitting on its hands for the last few months: the One max (little "m") also includes an oh-so-trendy fingerprint scanner beneath the camera.
Last week we reported that the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 had a root method from a couple of enterprising gentlemen over at XDA. The same team-up of designgears and Chainfire has now reproduced the Root De La Vega root method for Verizon's Note 3 (model number SM-N900V), which isn't quite as appropriate as far as the name goes, but it's just as awesome.
Search the Play Store for "tip calculator" and you'll probably find over nine thousand different ways to cut up gratuity. But now you don't need them: Google has added a tip calculator to its ubiquitous search engine on the mobile app and the web. Just search for "what's the tip for forty dollars" (or any amount you'd care to name) and Google will return the default 15% tip.

Then publisher Noodlecake is happy to oblige by turning the open-world, construction-oriented first-person action game into an open-world, construction-oriented platforming game. The Blockheads just landed in the Google Play Store after earning more than a few fans on iOS over the last ten months.
It's a good day to be a Samsung fan: they've delivered right on schedule. The flagship Galaxy Note 3 is available on Verizon starting today at the standard $299.99 subsidized price tag, $699.99 (ouch) unsubsidized, or $29.31 a month on the Edge plan. If you prefer your notation experience both larger and without a two-year contract, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (WiFi only) is also going on sale at the usual retail locations, starting at $549.99 for the 16GB model.
US Cellular, come on down: you're the next contestant on The Price Is Free. We've seen the first over-the-air update roll in for Moto X models on T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T, and now Motorola has posted details on a nearly identical upcoming update for US Cellular. That will probably makes Verizon the last major carrier to apply the Moto X update. Try not to act too shocked.

Flashier Twitter apps have come and gone, but I'm still pretty enamored with Plume. One reason is that the developer (LevelUp, of Beautiful Widgets fame) is constantly rolling out new features, and today's update adds a doozie: push notifications. You should get notifications for new tweets, replies, mentions, and messages more or less instantly, and the widget and main feed can now use a "Live Stream" mode.
This is what I like to see in an Android monetization model: options. The BitTorrent company released a full-function version of µTorrent (AKA uTorrent or MicroTorrent) a little more than a year ago. The beta app was free, but now there's a paid version that drops the beta tag in favor of a "Pro" label. The new app is $2.99 and includes all of the improvements made to the original app, with a little extra.
We saw the usual leaks earlier today, but Samsung has just officially revealed their curved-screen device on Samsung Tomorrow. The phone goes by the name Galaxy Round, which is almost surprising, considering Samsung's pathological need to tie things into the Galaxy S line as of late. In addition to the unique curved screen, it's basically a Galaxy Note 3 minus the S-Pen.

It's that time again, boys and girls. Last week the LTE model of the new Nexus 7 got an over-the-air update to Android 4.3.1, which was build number JLS36I for that specific device. As usual, Google has posted the factory software image for end users to download and the driver binaries for developers to play with.

Comic book fans have had various ways to read their favorite titles on Android for quite a while, most notably official stores like Comixology and Dark Horse. Now they can skip the middleman (well, at least one of the middlemen) for DC Comics. The nearly 80-year-old company has finally started publishing its comics, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks directly to the Books section of the Google Play Store.
It's been over two months since Google started releasing Android 4.3 builds, and in all that time users of the updated Nexus and Google Play edition devices haven't been able to access the HBO GO or MAX GO (Cinemax) video services. Considering that subscriptions to both channels are pricey (on top of a cable or satellite subscription, no less) that made for a lot of less-than-satisfied customers.
AT&T might be steadfastly refusing its customers full access to the devices they "own," but it's still plenty possible to get root access on most new phones, especially if they're popular. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 certainly qualifies for the latter, and the fellas at XDA have come through once again. XDA Recognized Developer "designgears" (with a little help from the reliable Jorrit "Chainfire" Jongma) has released a working root method for AT&T's model of the Note 3 (SM-900A).

It's about bloody time. Starting today, some of HBO's most popular currently-running original programming is available for purchase on the Google Play Store. For starters the fantasy drama Game of Thrones (seasons one and two), urban fantasy True Blood (seasons one through five), and political drama The Newsroom (season one) are available. Episodes are $2.99 for the dramas and $1.99 for The Newsroom, with small discounts for buying a full season.
