About Daniel Allen

Daniel writes guides on how to use the internet, explainers on how modern technology works, and the occasional smartwatch or e-reader review. He especially likes deep diving into niche topics that require more than scratching the surface (check out his explainers on mobile photography). He's been writing in newspapers, magazines, and blogs for over 20 years writing hard news, entertainment, and science stories.

When not writing, he enjoys reading science fiction, playing music, and raising a rambunctious toddler. The devices you'll find him using every day are his Pixel 4a (he'll upgrade in 2024, ignore this story), Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook, and Amazon Fire HD 10. Eventually he's going to upgrade his Ender 3 to direct drive so he can print TPU...

What was your first phone and what do you remember about it?

"My first phone was a random flip phone sometime around 2004. At the time, I wanted to upgrade to a phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard so I didn't have to use the number pad to send texts. I was a bit hesitant to move on to a proper smartphone because I didn't (and still don't, honestly) like the touchscreen typing experience. Perhaps the greatest innovation in mobile phone tech at this time was the standardization of the charging port. Proprietary charging cables suck."

What tech products or categories are you most passionate about?

"I am really passionate about explaining how technology works and the science behind it. Lately I've been learning everything I can about reflective display technologies like electrophoretic e-ink displays and reflective/transflective LCDs. I think it's a super-interesting niche that will be growing as more people spend more time with their devices.

I'm also a long-time gamer so I jump at the chance to be the resident expert on a game like Vampire Survivors or Pocket City 2."

Today's Chromebooks are a far cry from the budget machines that began flooding schools back in the 2010s. Although those machines were utilitarian and rugged enough to survive a year's worth of cafeteria lunches, today's Chromebooks are strong enough to handle almost any computing task you throw at them, and they're only getting better. Case in point, Google and Microsoft just dropped a new collab: you can now edit Microsoft 365 documents and access Microsoft OneDrive directly from your Chromebook.

The mobile Reddit experience can be hit or miss. There are lots of annoying ads to deal with, the videos load slowly (if at all), and you tend to be bombarded with recommended communities. Given how much of a burden enjoying Reddit on iOS or Android can be, it's good to hear that some new updates are coming to the app, particularly in terms of how users interact with posts and each other.

YouTube offers a large collection of streaming audio and video content. It would take 82 years to watch everything that's uploaded in one day. Yet, it's disappointing when music or a video stops when you minimize YouTube or lock your phone screen. Premium users don't have such an experience, as background playback is one of the perks.

There's no question that Fallout has been a certified hit since Interplay launched the first game back in 1997. Fans have seen a steady stream of new games, updates, DLC, RPGs, wargames, board games, Magic the Gathering decks, and even a one-shot comic. To the universal joy and trepidation of every fan on the internet, a Fallout show was announced back in 2020. Now, nearly four years later, it's out, and we can report that it's awesome. Amazon even announced a second season. But what you might have missed is that Bethesda has quietly added an update to its 2015 mobile hit Fallout Shelter, and since we've explored the new update, here's what you can expect.

Some of the biggest news at the January 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event was the arrival of Samsung's Galaxy AI. This exciting new technology puts artificial intelligence capabilities in the palm of your hand. The feature initially launched on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, but has made its way to older phones.

There are hints that Google could be primed to use Gemini to give password suggestions to Chrome users.

With its $150 price tag and state-of-the-art color screen, the Kobo Clara Colour has ushered in a new era of affordable color e-readers. Before the announcement of Kobo’s new color lineup, the cheapest color e-reader cost over $300, but going forward, color e-reader manufacturers like Boox and PocketBook will need to reevaluate their pricing strategies if they are to remain in contention for some of the best e-readers on the market. Conspicuously absent from this emerging electrophoretic arms race is the brand that started it all, Kindle.

When it comes to Chromebooks, there aren't as many options out there as there are for Windows laptops. Thankfully, for those of us who find value in the Chromebook ecosystem, the OEMs making the machines we love are pretty reliable about putting out suitable hardware at affordable prices, and there are lots of good choices. Even with the plethora of awesome Chromebooks out there, there's always cause for celebration when we hear a new high-end model is coming out, and that's just what Acer is giving us.

The AI revolution is upon us, particularly when it comes to large language models. Services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are shaking up the definition of “content” online (shake up your headphones with these top-tier earbuds). But, for every time these programs amaze us with their seeming intelligence, there’s always a counterexample to show us just how wrong LLMs can be when it comes to summarizing content. Today’s epic fail comes from Grok, X’s AI search assistant, which brutally misconstrued a (very) bad game from Golden State Warrior Klay Thompson.

If you record video on an Android phone, you’re probably used to disappointment. For years, software support for cameras in the Android ecosystem has been a tangled mess of contradictions and incompatibilities. And the third-party apps you can use have been more of an afterthought than a properly developed application. If you need to record video on your phone, you’re almost certainly better off with an iPhone. But all that may be about to change thanks to a new app from Blackmagic previewed at NAB Las Vegas this week.

If you’ve spent any time at all on YouTube, you’ll know that the video-hosting site is always in a state of flux. Whether it’s the new desktop redesign from last week or the improved picture-in-picture functionality popping up in Europe last month, YouTube is always trying out something different. If you’re one of the lucky few, you might have seen YouTube’s latest quality-of-life update show up in the subscription feed on your phone. Instead of showing you a sequential feed of videos from channels you subscribe to, you can opt to see videos that YouTube deems “Most Relevant.”

The new updates are pretty, but there's not much else to dig into

Pokémon GO is starting to get old in game years, but despite this fact, there is still a thriving community surrounding it. There are numerous Facebook and Discord groups around the world that exist solely to organize in-person gatherings and facilitate trades. Similar online communities have set themselves to the task of peeking behind the curtain of the game to suss out all of its secrets. Even so, the one-time jewel in the Pokémon game line-up is starting to lose players and cultural relevance. In order to stem these losses, Niantic is pushing out a series of quality-of-life updates over the next month that it’s calling “Rediscover Pokémon GO.”

Unless you've been looking, you might have missed that the e-reader underdog Kobo has quietly become the greenest e-reader device maker on the market. The Canadian company has a reputation for releasing products with the health of the planet in mind. Since 2022, all of its e-readers have been made with 85% recycled plastics. It even offsets the carbon emissions associated with its shipping through the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project. Its three newest devices are no exception to this and take that commitment further by being packaged in 100% recycled packaging. But Kobo isn't just good to the planet; it turns out it's also good to its customers with plans for iFixit support.

Google Wallet is the final girl of the Google app lineup: it just refuses to die. The subdomain wallet.google.com first went online in the summer of 2011 when the the original Google Wallet was launched. That app was folded into Android Pay in 2018, later rebranded as Google Pay. In July 2022, the Wallet brand was revived with the intention of replacing the Google Pay app that had once replaced it. Google officially announced that it was shutting down the Google Pay app back in February, and even though service is slated to continue until June 4, the pay.google.com subdomain now redirects to a brand new, much more functional, Google Wallet web portal.
