Tip: How To Get Arrow/Cursor Keys On The Swype Keyboard

Today's tip is almost a necessity because I've seen so many of you looking and asking and complaining about having no cursor keys in Swype (us EVO 4G users absolutely need them - the phone has no trackball!).

So I am here to tell you that Swype actually does have cursor keys but they're hidden away in a secret menu behind a super-secret swipe. Well, not too secret but if you haven't looked through the manual, you are probably unaware of it.

Angry Birds, The #1 Selling iPhone Game, On Its Way To Android This Summer

Angry Birds has been a hugely popular iPhone/iPad game, ranking #1 for awhile now. Developed by Rovio, Angry Birds is a great physics game where you shoot various birds out of a sling shot to destroy buildings and defeat the evil green pigs (this sounds awesome, doesn't it?).

Rovio, however, is not satisfied enough to dominate the iPhone Apps Store, so they've now set their eyes on Android, which means this summer we will all get to enjoy flinging birds out of slingshots, all without getting arrested.

Yahoo Mail, Messenger, And Search Hit The Android Market

Though it took a little while, Yahoo has just launched Android apps for their Mail and Messenger services, and most interestingly, their Search service.

The Mail and Messenger apps don’t really hold many surprises. They are fairly polished and include all the functions you would expect; for e-mail, this means checking, organizing, sending e-mails, and downloading attachments.

For Messenger, you are able to chat with your Yahoo friends and keep the app running in the background.

CyanogenMod 6 Hands-On: First Impressions

Essentially, users can expect an experience that will not stray too far from what CyanogenMod 5.08 changed in terms of the UI. An updated version of ADW Launcher does provide a few enhancements, though.

TV and movie geeks alike are bound to be giddy with joy today as IMDB has released their official (and free) Android app to the Android Market. We’ve provided a few screens for you take a look at below.

Overall, the app appears fully functional, and actually quite useful. You’re able to look up TV recaps, schedules, box office results, local showtimes, and movie reviews. Pressing your phone’s search button will bring up the search bar set for IMDB, eliciting results just like IMDB.com’s web-based search.

In an AndroidPolice exclusive, a tipster has provided us reliable information that Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google (GOOG), has recently become an investor in the 3rd party mobile app distributor PocketGear. What does this mean? It seems most likely that Schmidt, and perhaps Google itself, are looking to see if PocketGear can provide a suitable distribution platform for Android apps. CyanogenMod 6 To Bring Froyo To Nexus One, Droid, Dream/Sapphire, Slide, Desire, Incredible, and EVO 4G - Experimental Builds For N1 and Droid This Weekend

Cyanogen of CyanogenMod posted an update to his website earlier this evening on that status of and potential timeline for CyanogenMod 6. Key points below:

  • Will support Nexus One and Droid first, Dream/Sapphire shortly thereafter, and Slide a little later
  • Desire, Incredible, and EVO 4G will all be supported eventually (read: No ETA)
  • First experimental build expected to be available this weekend
  • Small incremental update to CyanogenMod 5 will also appear this weekend

This is big news, as CyanogenMod 6, a custom ROM, is based on the Android 2.2 Froyo source code.

Update: The Kindle for Android app is now available to the masses, and can be found via a simple market query for “Kindle”or the QR code below.

The app appears as it does in the preview; upon booting it offers up a registration/sign in screen. Upon sign-in, the app pulls your purchased books from Amazon’s Kindle Bookstore servers and transfers them to your device. A link to a mobile-optimized version of the Kindle Bookstore is available by a press of the menu button while in the app.

A savvy XDA forum user has taken the initiative to decompile the Droid X’s live wallpapers and provide them to the Android masses. At the moment, 6 live wallpapers of the Droid X “Eye” are available on the thread - 5 from the phone and 1 modified by one of the forum members. Links for each below:

Installing

To install your Droid X Eye live wallpaper, simply

  • download one of the .apk’s linked above straight from your phone's browser and click on it to install or
  • move it to your phone from your computer, open using Astro File Manager or another install-capable file manager, and select install

Once installed, the Droid X wallpaper is selected like any other live wallpaper:

  • go to your home screen
  • hit the settings key
  • select wallpapers > live wallpapers
  • the installed .apk should appear as “DROID X.”

The wallpapers should be installable on any 2.1 or 2.2 Android device, with or without root.
