How many times have you thought "you know, this battery widget would be much better if it had some sort of spinning thing around it." or "I would really like to see my remaining battery percentage in the center of a flower."? If you've ever muttered either of the above (or anything similar), the solution to your quandary just landed in the Play Store. It's called Animated Battery Widgets, and if you can't figure out what it is just by reading the name, then I feel sad for you. Read More
Swiftkey 3 recently arrived on the Play Store, and not too long afterwards, the company has posted a statement on its blog letting us know that the app is currently the best-selling paid app on the Play Store. Not too bad, SwiftKey! Of course, the biggest challenge is ahead, as Google announced yesterday that, from Jelly Bean onwards, the default Android keyboard will attempt to predict your next word. Which smacks just a little of SwiftKey's pitch. Read More
Google Drive just saw its first update since back in April when it shed the Docs nametag. The update is relatively minor, but still brings some worthwhile enhancements and tweaks:
- Quickly find files that have been recently opened, edited or shared with you
- Upload/Download all file types to/from your Google Drive
- Selecting contacts to share with is easier
- Faster navigation of folders when syncing in the background
- Choose text alignment in the documents editor
Frequent users of the Drive app will surely take pleasure in the faster navigation while sync is in progress, as the app could get quite sluggish at times; the ability to upload all file types is definitely a welcome improvement and one more step in Google's quest to take out cloud storage heavyweight Dropbox. It seems as though every Google app is getting an upgrade during I/O, and Google Earth is no exception, with version 7 now available to download through the Play Store.
The latest version includes a new feature called Tour Guide, which highlights all of the places a city has to offer, both to tourists and locals. For example, if you're in Rome, the app will point out places such as the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, two spots that are very popular with tourists. Read More
Viggle, which pairs a great idea with a funny name, is an app we covered last month during its beta period. The TV check-in app, which has already seen great success on iOS, recently landed in the Play Store though, finally out of beta.
For those not familiar with the app, Viggle essentially listens to your TV's audio (at your command), and figures out which show(s) you're watching by comparing the audio it heard to a database, rewarding points depending on the programming (for instance, promoted shows get more points). Read More
Sirius XM subscribers will soon have one more way to consume the content that they pay for - this time through Google TV. It's said that the partnership and application will be announced at Google I/O this week, and the app should be available "this summer," though no specific date has been given.
The service will be available to all Sirius XM subscribers and include all of Sirus' most popular content, like the ramblings of Howard Stern, "Carlin's Corner" (a channel dedicated specifically to George Carlin), ESPN SportsCenter, and a host of other similar content. Read More
When we first took a look at Zombies, Run! a few days ago, I said that, while the concept is great, I hoped it would be $8 worth of amazing. Not to spoil the ending to this story right away, but the short version is: probably. This app could easily be worth $8 to many users. But not for the reasons you might think. And, before you start reaching for your wallet, you need to answer one very important question: are you willing to commit to a workout routine? Read More
