LG V20 finally starts getting Android Pie, LG G8 Android 10 due by year's end

The LG V20, the company's last flagship with a removable battery, is three years old now, but the Korean manufacturer hasn't forgotten about it. LG V20s in Korea are currently being updated to Android Pie, with US carrier units hopefully following along shortly, if the past is any indication. LG also announced that its spring flagship phone, the G8 ThinQ, will be updated to Android 10 in the fourth quarter.

Treble is actually making a big difference when it comes to Android updates

We're all familiar with Android's dirty "F" word: fragmentation. Turns out, we can't really depend on phone manufacturers to keep devices updated out of the goodness of their own hearts, so Google has been rolling out changes like Project Treble meant to make that job as easy for them as possible. Based on some recently published metrics, Treble is making a big difference.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 receives Android 9 Pie update

Android tablets, like their phone counterparts, receive periodic Android OS updates — albeit much more slowly. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablet — a flagship LTE tablet from 2017 — has now been updated to Android 9 Pie. Sure, Android 10 would be preferable, but that will probably never happen considering the Tab S3 launched with Android 7 Nougat.

Android's iconic dessert names are going away, starting with Android 10

The last dessert to grace the name of a version of Google's Android operating system will officially be pie. At a meeting in the Android team's new office in Mountain View last month, we sat down with some of the Googlers responsible for handling Android's biggest rebrand since, well, Android.

Desserts have been a part of Android from (almost) the beginning. Android 1.0, a version of the software nobody ever really used, was internally known as Astroid, but every release that followed carried a desert. In total, Android had 14 (official) dessert-themed releases: Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0-1), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), Honeycomb (3.0-2), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), Jelly Bean (4.1-3), KitKat (4.4), Lollipop (5.0-1), Marshmallow (6.0), Nougat (7.0-1), Oreo (8.0-1), to today's Android 9 Pie.

[Update: Rolling out] Razer Phone will get Android 9 Pie 'in the coming weeks'

The original Razer Phone received widespread praise when it was released in late 2017, mostly thanks to its then-unique 120Hz screen. However, Razer hasn't done a great job with long-term support, as the device is still running Android Oreo with a year-old security patch. Thankfully for those of you who bought the device, Razer has finally confirmed that a Pie update for the OG Razer Phone will arrive soon.

LG starts international Android 9 Pie rollout for V30

Over the past few years, LG has slipped to one of the worst phone manufacturers when it comes to software updates. It already took nearly a year for Android 9 Pie to arrive on the US variants of the LG G7, and the company's older phones are waiting even longer. Android Pie is now rolling out to the 2017 V30, but the update hasn't arrived in America quite yet.
