Android 7.0 Nougat

The newest Android 7.1.2 beta brought a new battery usage alerts list to show any misbehaving apps

In light of all of the Android O news and highlights, let's take a step back and look at something new in the latest 7.1.2 beta build that landed a few days ago. The battery section of the Settings now includes a "Usage alerts" option in the overflow menu, which lists any apps that are consuming too much battery (if any).

[Update: RUU] T-Mobile variant of the HTC One M9 starts receiving Nougat

HTC hasn't been doing the best in recent years, even squandering an attempt to revitalize itself with the U Ultra. Still, the former Android king is trying to keep its phones updated, even some of its older ones. Previously, several international versions of the One M9 started to receive Nougat. The U.S. is quite a bit behind, it seems, but it looks like the T-Mobile variant is the first to get the update.

Android 7.1.2 beta 2 adds fingerprint scanner gesture to the Nexus 6P

According to a tip we just received, the latest Android Nougat beta for the Nexus 6P finally adds the much-demanded fingerprint swipe gesture for accessing the notification tray. The toggle can be found under the "Moves" area in the settings app.

To say the fingerprint scanner gesture drama has been a thing would be an understatement. First it wasn't happening, then it was possibly happening. Then, silence. After a while waiting, last month the Nexus 5X did get the feature as part of the initial 7.1.2 beta, but the Nexus 6P was left out. It appears the wait is over, at least if you're in the beta program.

It's not clear what changes the update brings at this time, but we'll let you know if we find anything, obviously. Have you received the update yet? Noticing anything new? Feel free to chime in.

OxygenOS 4.1 (Android 7.1.1) is rolling out to the OnePlus 3 and 3T

OnePlus is on a roll with these updates for its 2016 flagships. Just earlier this month, the OnePlus 3 and 3T received Android 7.1.1 via the Open Beta program, but now the new OS version is rolling out to the stable channel users via an OTA. That was quick.

ZTE Axon 7 gets Android 7.1.1 Nougat OTA update

ZTE isn't having its best days lately after pleading guilty to violating US sanctions against Iran and the failure of its Kickstarter campaign for the Hawkeye, but that hasn't stopped the company from still forging on with its quick and laudable support for the Axon 7.

A little more than a month after issuing an update to Android 7.0 for the Axon 7, ZTE is today starting the rollout of Android 7.1.1 for the phone. Only a few non-Nexus and non-Pixel devices on the market officially support Android 7.1.1: there's OnePlus with its open beta, BQ's release a couple of days ago for its Aquaris X5 Plus, and now the Axon 7.

BQ releases Android 7.1.1 OTA for the Aquaris X5 Plus (while most of us still haven't received 7.0)

I still don't have Android 7.0 on my top-of-the-line Galaxy S7 Edge in Lebanon, and that makes me fume each time I see another device being updated to Nougat while I'm stuck on Marshmallow. But it also makes me appreciate OTA updates even more when they're issued for lesser known devices and by lesser known companies.

A great example is the Aquaris X5 Plus, a Snapdragon 652 phone with 5" Full HD display and 2/3GB of RAM released in Europe in July of 2016, that perfectly embodies the midrange market. You

Samsung is switching to a monthly security update schedule for US-unlocked Galaxy phones

When the US unlocked models of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge were released, many were overjoyed to have a variant that wouldn't be tied to a carrier, yet would be fully compatible with all four major carriers here in the states. Despite these unlocked versions' higher price tags, many picked them up in hopes of less bloat and quicker updates.

Unfortunately, while the unlocked models did come with fewer pre-installed apps, buyers were extremely let down in terms of updates. Not only did they not arrive more quickly, but they were actually being sent out more infrequently and much later than carrier models'.

[Update: ZS570KL] Asus pushes Android 7.0 to the ZenFone 3 Deluxe (ZS550KL)

Asus sort of missed the boat with the ZenFone 3 line, which took ages to come out in the US and then wasn't very competitive with other devices. The ZenFone 3 Deluxe was priced similarly to the OnePlus 3, but it wasn't as good. Asus isn't pretending the phone never happened, though. This phone is getting an Android 7.0 update, the first wide rollout of Nougat for Asus.

[Update: It's fixed] The Nexus 6 Android 7.1.1 update brought with it some speakerphone echo

Nexus 6 owners had cause to rejoice a few days ago when Android 7.1.1 finally hit the beastly phone. It sat on 7.0 for quite a bit after its younger brethren received the update. However, now it seems that the celebration has come to a slight hiccup. It appears that the Shamu is suffering from a speakerphone echo bug. Yikes.
