Android 11 will let apps mute disruptive notifications while you're recording video

One of the worst things your phone can do when you're taking a photo or video is vibrate and ruin your shot or, even worse, blast a notification tone and ruin the entire moment. Well, long-suffering mobile photogs, take a deep breath: Android 11 will include APIs for camera apps to mute those alerting notifications while you're using them.

Android 11 can automatically enable dark theme at certain times or sunset

The first developer preview of Android 11 is finally out, and now that there are OTA images we can flash to devices, we're starting to discover more features than what Google mentioned in the official announcement. One of those hidden features is a scheduled mode for dark theme, something that was strangely missing from last year's Android 10 release.

First-gen Pixel and Pixel XL will predictably not get Android 11

We're officially on the road to Android 11, which means a whole round of developer preview builds are on the way to Pixel phones — as well as other non-Google phones likely to be announced at I/O in May that will go through their own beta stack. Unfortunately, for O.G. Pixel and Pixel XL owners, they won't be joining for the ride.

First Android 11 Developer Preview lands today for Google Pixel 2, 3, 3a, and 4

Android 11 is now official, and Google is releasing the first Developer Preview for this new version starting today. The software changes this time sound ambitious, with Google essentially taking most of its work on Android 10 and (literally) turning it up to 11, featuring enhancements to privacy and security, improvements to Project Mainline, a new dedicated "conversations" section for notifications, and tweaks to better harness 5G — all among a much longer list of changes just too big to include here. You can check it out for yourself by manually flashing it onto supported Pixel phones (everything but the 2016 OGs).

Here are 11 features that need to be in Android 11

Last year's Android 10 was a massive release. It had a system-wide dark theme, updated navigation gestures, dozens of privacy changes, and much more. However, stock Android still has a few missing features compared to the customized Android builds found on devices from third-party manufacturers, and there's even a few iOS features that would be nice to see.

The first preview builds of Android 11 will likely show up in the coming months, no doubt with even more features to make our smartphones and tablets more useful. Here are 11 changes we'd love to see added to Android 11, in no particular order.

Android 11 might get dark mode scheduling

Android 11 might get dark mode scheduling

With Android 10, Google finally added a system-wide dark mode to its OS, but unless you want to rely on a third-party tool, there is no way to automatically schedule a theme switch on stock Android. It looks like that's bound to change, as Google wants to introduce that capability with "a future Android release," presumably version 11 of the OS.
