Now that the 5G standards are complete (both standalone and the kind that piggybacks on LTE), American carriers are rushing to pump up the hype ahead of initial trials and deployments. For T-Mobile, that means announcing a new $3.5 billion investment in 5G with Swedish supplier Ericsson a mere week and a half after announcing a deal of the same dollar amount with Finland-based Nokia. Not only are chipset makers racing to 5G, there's also a constant push towards shrinking fabrication processes. The smaller the process, the smaller and more power efficient a chip can be – or, conversely, the more transistors it can fit, making it more powerful at the same size. In the ongoing battle to be at the forefront of 5G, Samsung has shot into a prominent position with the Exynos Modem 5100. The electronics company and chipset manufacturer today revealed a mobile modem built to the newest 3GPP-official 5G standards that features not only 5G functionality (using both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum), but also support for legacy wireless technology from 4G LTE all the way back to 2G GSM/CDMA. Every carrier now has a robust and mature 4G LTE network, so it's almost time to start rolling out a new wireless standard. 5G service will start popping up at the end of this year, but there won't be phones until 2019. Sprint and LG had partnered to launch what they claim will be the first 5G phone in the US. The unnamed device will reportedly arrive in the first half of 2019. Read More
The race to 5G is on with every carrier promising big rollouts of next-generation networks in the coming year, but what about the phones? It seems like 5G is one of those things that's perpetually sitting out on the horizon in tech news, but today Qualcomm took a decent step forward when it comes to a particular implementation. One of the carriers' more ambitious 5G solutions is to harness the high-frequency millimeter wave (mmWave) bands, which promise high bandwidth and low congestion, at the cost of limited coverage and some practicality concerns. AT&T has been aggressive with its 5G rollout plan to the point you might have 5G service in your area before there are even any 5G phones to buy. The company says about a dozen cities will have 5G by the end of the year, but it's being coy by drawing out the announcement. Samsung is not only easily the world’s number one smartphone vendor, but also the top chipmaker, having recently surpassed Intel. There’s a pretty good reason for that, and it has something to do with breakthroughs like announcing the industry’s "first 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM for 5G and AI-powered mobile applications."
Before you jump to conclusions, it seems highly unlikely that this memory chip will be used on the Galaxy Note9 that’s right around the corner. Instead, Samsung appears to be setting the stage for the flagship generation after that, which could make AI applications even smarter (and thus scarier), and will hopefully deliver faster download speeds with "real" 5G connectivity.
