Most of you have probably heard of those ultra-chunky, utilitarian-looking CAT phones, but CAT is a construction equipment company, not a phone manufacturer. Bullitt Group produces those phones for CAT, and it is now licensing the Motorola name for rugged phones as well.

Bullitt Group now has an exclusive, long-term global license with Motorola for a "strategic brand partnership" that will see it produce ruggedized handsets bearing the Motorola name. The company (which has no relation to the iconic Steve McQueen movie nor the subsequent Ford Mustang trims, by the way) says that more details on these drop-proof and shockproof phones will come later this quarter. To be clear, Motorola will still be making its own phones; these Motorola-branded rugged phones will simply be additions to the lineup.

Aside from CAT phones, Bullitt has also produced phones for Land Rover and JCB (another construction equipment company). It also produced the Kodak Ektra camera phone, which was not particularly well-received. We look forward to seeing what materializes out of this partnership.
