HMD Global has just unveiled two new mid-range phones in the Nokia 6.2 and 7.2. CounterPoint rates HMD the number one OEM for the fast updates it delivers to Nokia phones and the company says it's committed to being even faster with Android 10. At today's event at IFA in Berlin, the renewal of the mid-tier Nokia lineup was the hot topic, with the same focus on delivering a premium Nokia experience at a fraction of flagship prices.
The headline announcement was the Nokia 7.2, which comes with a 48MP main camera sensor with Zeiss lenses and Quad Pixel technology — that means it uses pixel binning to produce 12MP images and it should allow for impressive low-light results. HMD claims that this phone also features DSLR-level pro-bokeh styles for the first time in a smartphone, with both foreground and background blur available to users. The other camera consist of a 5MP depth sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens.
Other specs for the Nokia 7.2 include a Snapdragon 660 chip with 4 or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Its 6.3-inch notched display has an FHD+ resolution and always-on HDR. It charges of USB-C, and you'll be pleased to hear that it also has a headphone jack. Nokia's signature 2-day battery life promise is once again in action, backed up by a 3,500mAh battery.
Next up is the Nokia 6.2, which also has a triple camera setup within a round enclosure that seems to be all the rage these days. This cheaper model has only a 16MP sensor for the main camera, but it's backed up by the same 5MP depth sensor and 8MP wide-angle alternative lenses. You'll notice the same waterdrop notch and chin, and that's because it's the same 6.3-inch FHD+ panel with the same HDR tech. These phones are actually pretty similar physically, which is great if you like the look of them as I do.
The 6.2 also has the same 3,500mAh battery, headphone jack, and USB-C charging port. The key differences are the Snapdragon 636 SoC and smaller RAM and storage configurations. Both phones support Dual-SIM and have dedicated Google Assistant keys.
Both phones will launch with Android 9 Pie before being updated to Android 10 in the near future. Like all Nokia phones, Android One will ensure at least two OS version bumps and 3 years of security patches. The Nokia 7.2 goes on sale at the end of September and starts at €299 for the 4/64GB variant, then €349 for the 6/64GB model. The colorways on offer are Cyan Green, Charcoal, and Ice (white). The 6.2 will be priced at €199 for 3/32GB and €249 for 4/64GB. It will be available from October in Ceramic Black or Ice (white).
HMD also used today's event to take the wraps off several new feature phones, the Nokia 110, 2270 Flip 4G, and the 800 Tough ruggedized monster. That's not all, as the Nokia Power true wireless earbuds also got a mention. They're IPX7 rated and apparently offer a total of 150 hours of playback time thanks to 30x charges in the case. In other news, the company says it plans to launch an "affordable yet premium Nokia-grade" 5G phone in 2020, so we've got that to look forward to.
