Most of the news that comes out of Computex each year doesn't really apply to Android, but today MediaTek has formally revealed a new high-end chipset for phones with a serious 5G twist: The new (apparently unnamed) 7nm SoC is the first to be announced with an integrated 5G modem.

Current 5G solutions by Qualcomm and Samsung make use of external modems, which work fine, but they suck down a lot of juice, sort of like the early LTE phones did with their external modems. The integrated Helio M70 5G modem included in MediaTek's new chipset will likely be much more power efficient, though it has some drawbacks. The modem can connect to sub-6GHz 5G NR networks, but doesn't work with the higher-frequency (and higher bandwidth) mmWave networks being rolled out by AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile — though it is possible external support for such network types could come later. As you may expect, the Helio M70 modem in this new chipset also works with 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

This integrated modem is rated to pull up to 4.7Gbps down, and 2.5Gbps up, with support for HPUE, LTE and 5G dual connectivity (EN-DC), 2x carrier aggregation, and power saving methods like dynamic power sharing and dynamic bandwidth switching.

The new chipset is built to a 7nm node (probably TSMC's) and includes the very latest ARM A77 CPU cores and Mali G77 GPU, both of which were only revealed in the last couple days and which should make for a snappy experience. There's also an "all new AI processing unit" which remains unnamed and unsubscribed, but apparently, MediaTek considers it noteworthy. The chipset also supports 4K video encode and decode at 60fps, and up to 80MP camera sensors.

MediaTek's new SoC will be sampled to manufacturers in Q3 of this year, though devices aren't expected to ship with it until the beginning of next year, which is quite a bit of lead time. By then, we'll likely see more 5G-integrated chipsets announced from Qualcomm and Samsung, and they could even beat MediaTek to market. Presumably, we'll get more information about MediaTek's as-yet-unnamed chipset with time.
