Today ARM has announced its new Mali G52 and G31 GPU designs, respectively targeting so-called "mainstream" and high-efficiency applications. The bigger G52 will someday make its way into more demanding use cases like TVs and high-end phones, where its 3.6x performance improvements in machine learning/AI workloads can be appreciated, while the G31 brings ARM's Bifrost architecture, Vulkan and all, to a more affordable level.
It'll probably be at least a year or two until we see either of these reference GPU designs in a shipping product, so it's tough to say precisely which market each might find the best success in. Even so, the Mali-G31 looks destined for lower-end applications like entry to mid-range phones. At least, given the A55-tied examples provided. And by delivering ARM's Bifrost architecture to the lower price point, both Vulkan and OpenGL ES 3.2 will be available on even more devices.
The bigger Mali-G52 targets higher power circumstances, including applications such as TVs and higher-end phones or tablets, and ARM is advertising the GPU as delivering 3.6x performance increases for machine learning workloads, all while claiming a modest 15% efficiency improvement.
In addition to the two new reference GPU designs, ARM has also unveiled the Mali-D51 Display Processor and Mali-V52 Video Processor. The former handles simple offloaded tasks from the GPU like compositing, overlays, and scaling, and combined with the previously announced Assertive Display 5 it should result in benefits to memory latency and power savings. The new Mali-V52 video processor can decode 4K at 60FPS on the fly, delivering 2x the performance over the Mali-V61 in 1/3 less die space.
Now, these are just reference designs. It'll be up to chipmakers to decide how they want to implement them, and ARM does provide some flexibility in the architecture to allow for customization. Coupled with variances in the other components they might be paired with, you should probably take any advertised numbers with a grain of salt. Even so, it's always good to get a glance at what future chipsets might hide inside.

Machine learning makes its way to the mainstream
Machine learning (ML) is becoming more pervasive and cuts across devices for every user. The cameras in premium and mainstream phones now recognize our face and our fingerprints by running ML algorithms, a task that does not require SoCs to have the latest neural-network processing engines. In mainstream devices it's not always practical to dedicate silicon and engineering effort to ML processors, it requires every component of the SoC to be used to its best advantage on a workload-by-workload basis, and the combination of DynamIQ CPUs and the Mali-G51 deliver improved ML performance for these existing applications.
Gaming & mixed realities

Delivering ultra-responsive, enhanced UI for DTV
Gone are the days when our TVs simply showed one picture and plain text menu. Now we have layers upon layers of UI complexity, bringing in pre-integrated apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime to support advanced voice control to gesture recognition. These features, as well as the ability to play picture in picture, or a video wall of up to 16 videos running at once, are requiring more from the DTV’s SoC. They need responsive and efficient support without compromising visual quality.
