I am Bread

Android Police coverage: [This game is toast] I am Bread, from the makers of Surgeon Simulator, butters its way onto the Play Store

In I Am Bread, you are bread. It's a radical idea for a game, of course: one slice of wheat's epic struggle to become toast. I Am Bread started on Steam as one of those games that's "hilariously" awful because of its contrived control scheme - a lot like Octodad in that respect. Once you get past the goofy premise, actually playing the game is more about patience than anything else. It's $5 with no in-app purchases.

‘I am Bread’ is the latest quirky adventure from the creators of 'Surgeon Simulator', Bossa Studios. This isn't the best thing since sliced bread . . . it is sliced bread. You are bread. Your mission, become toast. Take on all hazards to deliciousness as you head on an adventure across 8 levels taking bread from its natural confine in the kitchen, throughout the house and then venture outside into the garden and beyond. Look out for the floor and any other unsavoury obstacles that could harm your tastiness as you seek out the means to achieve bread's ultimate goal.

Lara Croft: Guardian of Light™

Android Police coverage: Four years later, Lara Croft: Guardian Of Light surfaces on the Play Store for everyone

Guardian of Light is an unconventional entry in the decades-old Tomb Raider/Lara Croft franchise, a top-down action game with twin stick controls. It still fits well into the universe of the character, however: there's a solid mix of progressive action and brain-twisting puzzles. Lara and the Guardian can be played in co-op fashion if you'd like a little Gauntlet-style fun. It's very late coming to the Play Store, but otherwise it's not bad for four bucks.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, the acclaimed fast-paced action adventure game set in the Tomb Raider world is now on mobile. Venture deep into the jungles of Central America in search of the Mirror of Smoke, a powerful artefact from a lost age. Whoever wields this item has the power to rid the world of light, and hold the future of humanity in their hands. But now fate hangs in the balance, with the Mirror in the possession of Xolotl, the God of Darkness - Lara and Totec, the Guardian of the Mirror, only have until sunrise to defeat him, or the world will be plunged into an age of darkness.

Solitaire: Decked Out Ad Free

Android Police coverage: Solitaire: Decked Out is a delightfully designed, free, and ad-free take on the solitaire game

Damn you, Microsoft, for deciding that Solitaire was something that needed to be ad-farmed and paid for. At least someone out there is still giving it away. This mobile version has multiple game modes, decorative extras, pausing, portrait and landscape support, and everything else you could want from a game that could be played in real life with a single deck and one person. It's free with some IAPs that you can also easily unlock by just playing the game.

The Classic Solitaire you know and love but WITHOUT Ads. Enjoy the original Klondike Solitaire(Patience) App with no ads. Unlock themed decks and discover unique winning ceremonies. Beat the game to earn coins and unlock decks and decorative items. DECK OUT your play experience with different themes and effects. Themes include penguins, flowers, hot dogs, UFOs, and more. Let’s get DECKED OUT.

Plants vs. Zombies™ Heroes

Android Police coverage: Plants vs. Zombies Heroes brings multiplayer card battles to the casual franchise

Everyone and their mother wants to get in on that lucrative collectible card battle game action, and EA and PopCap are no different. The latest entry in the Plants vs. Zombies franchise extends its unique approach to tower defense into this more structured genre, with lanes that unlock as battles continue. The usual $100 in-app purchases favor the spendy path to multiplayer dominance, but there's also a single-player campaign.

From the makers of Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 comes the next great game in the epic battle between doom and bloom – Plants vs. Zombies Heroes. Collect Heroes with outrageous and incredible super powers and build your ultimate battle team. Embark on a journey to discover new characters, and confront mighty opponents along the way. And, for the first time ever on mobile, play as either plants or zombies. It’s the lawn of a new battle.

Kingdom: New Lands

Android Police coverage: Kingdom: New Lands, a beautiful pixel-art kingdom-builder arrives on NVIDIA SHIELD

Kingdom: New Lands shares a lot in common with games like Terraria and Starbound, both of which are 2D pixelated building titles inspired by Minecraft. But this one has a bigger focus on its dynamic world, where players can journey across a variety of terrain and be attacked by all kinds of monsters. Also, you can ride bears. What else could you possibly want... except maybe compatibility with non-SHIELD hardware? (Too bad.) It's seven dollars with no IAP.

Tales spread of far off isles with mysteries waiting to be discovered. Rulers will need all the strength of their subjects to sail away and find new kingdoms in these New Lands. Kingdom: New Lands builds upon the award-winning gameplay and mystery of Kingdom by introducing an abundance of new content to the IGF-nominated title while maintaining the simplicity and depth that legions of monarchs have come to experience and enjoy.

Mini Metro

Mini Metro is a puzzle game that plays out on those iconic multicolored subway maps. The core idea is that the player needs to extend the lines across the terrain as the city expands, managing the lines and keeping traffic flowing. The "stages" are based on maps of real cities around the world, and upgrades and more complex options are unlocked as the game progresses. Mini Metro is five bucks with no in-app purchases.

RETSNOM

"Retsnom" is "Monster" spelled backwards. It's an appropriate title for a platformer that aims to turn the conventional approach to running, jumping, and fighting on its head. In Retsnom players progress through a Metroid-style maze with mirror powers to reverse blocks, direction, and gravity to help them progress. The graphics are minimal, but the noir story is not. Just one dollar opens up more than 60 levels.

Have you ever looked into a mirror carefully? How do you know whether the person looking at you from the other side is yourself or someone else inside the mirror? Let me introduce you one of the greatest indie game, 'Retsnom' created by solo developer Somi and published by Magic Cube. You have a daughter. She is unfortunately infected by a zombie virus. The only way to save your daughter is to visit the laboratory in the future and steal the medicine that is expected to be made by your colleagues.

Miaou Moon

There have been a lot of creative platforming mascots in gaming's short history, but I'm willing to bet that "kitty in a space suit with a Dragonball Z scouter" beats them all. Underneath the cutesy hand-drawn exterior of Miaou Moon (like "Meow Moon," if you were wondering) is a mix of standard platforming and twitchy physics-based jumps and boosts. There are 60 levels to be had for two bucks with no in-app purchases.

Rise to the challenge. Miaou Moon mixes cuteness and difficulty in a survival 2D physics platformer. You are Captain Miaou, traveling back to your planet with a cargo full of high energy food. Hit by a meteorite, you’re ejected and your food scattered all around 5 orbiting moons. Your only chance of survival is to grab energy food to propel yourself forward. Too few energy and you'll starve to death, too much and you'll explode. When you eat, your cat gets stronger and bigger, but deflates each time you propel.

Flappy Golf 2

The original Flappy Golf was a fun little casual title that made Flappy Bird a bit less infuriating by incorporating designed stages and sports elements. The sequel is more of the same: basic left-or-right flapping and skill shots to get to the designated hole in each stage, rinse and repeat. But this time it has multiplayer in both online and local varieties, plus new trick balls that can change the dynamics of flight. Though the Play Store notes that the free game has IAP, I can't see any in the current version.

The sequel to the insanely addicting Flappy Golf is here. Featuring the courses of Super Stickman Golf 3. Play our famous Race Mode either online against your friends or locally for some serious fun. Or flap your way to the hole in as few flaps as possible to earn all the Gold Stars. Can you get them all and unlock Super Star Mode?

  • Online and Local Multiplayer
  • 29 Courses with More Coming.
  • Simple flap controls

Halfpipe Hero - Skateboarding

We've seen skateboarding games that try to shrink down the Tony Hawk model for mobile, but that seems less useful than a mobile first-approach. For example, Halfpipe Heroes gives you a 2D playing field with a single halfpipe to master via simple controls. There's a surprising amount of depth behind that basic setup, and like Tony Hawk, one of the primary motivations is unlocking new player skins. Ads can be removed for three bucks, otherwise there are no in-app purchases.

Halfpipe Hero is an awesome arcade skateboarding game featuring retro pixel graphics with quick and simple controls. Tap to pull off sweet tricks and nail each landing as you go faster and higher on the halfpipe. Complete challenges to unlock new locations and cool heroes. Skateboarding made simple and fun, one tap does everything. Grab your skateboard and go fast to pull off backside inverts, grinds, flips and more.

Tap 'n' Slash

Tap 'n' slash is an isometric hack-and-slash action game that doesn't take itself too seriously. Players can take up the mantle of several not-quite-copyright-infringing heroes like "Canon the Barbarian." The controls are interesting, a sort of reverse-Q-bert that lets players dash and attack diagonally left or right. I could do without the played-out pixel graphics, but the speed and twitchiness are fun. Free with IAP that goes up to $12.

Rush through deadly dungeons and avoid the deadly traps. Destroy the horde of orcs and goblins, smash the undead army and purge hundreds of demons. Dash with your favorite character while killing the monsters, picking up the loot to upgrade the XP level of your hero. This ultimate pixel art RPG game brings you solid and pure dungeon crawling experience. You have to do nothing more just... Tap 'n' Slash.!.!.!.!.!.!

Shootout in Mushroom Land

Here's a Mario-style platforming game that adds machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades, and other goodies of handheld destruction. Why? Why not? The game is simple, but at the moment it's free with no ads or IAP, and the developer says new content will be added on a regular basis.

Ben from Team Hot Guns has a job to locate and secure the legendary Money Tree, but as it always happens in this kind of nonsense stories - he's not the only one looking for it. Use guns, helmets, grenades and jetpacks to find and collect the map pieces placed in the empty jam jars around the island. Shootout in Mushroom Land will be updated with the new levels and content - so expect to see more of this absurd retro-action platformer soon .

Break Liner

Ketchapp's latest casual Android game is... well, it's weird. You control a minimalistic spaceship that breaks up lines in a coral snake pattern, skipping the red and bouncing off the black for reasons that aren't adequately explained. It's an oddly addicting experience once you get into the groove of things, and the basic graphics keep the focus on the one-touch play. Two dollars gets rid of advertising.

Break the line and boost through space in this atmospheric arcade experience. How far can you push it before you break yourself?

Fit In The Hole

Here's a game with a simple but creative hook: get the square to exactly the right spot to fit through the oncoming wall. (There's a Japanese game show with the same idea, only with humans.) Like all Ketchapp games it's fast and basic, but Tetris fans and others who love a spatial challenge should get a kick out of it. Ads can be removed for $2.

You are a cube on a journey through the walls. Find the gap in the wall, roll over the terrain and try to fit inside. Don't get hit by the wall. Try your best and let's see how many walls you can pass.

Henry the Cloud

Here's a happy little endless runner with a twist: players have to draw out a path for the character to follow instead of directly controlling him. The "him" in this case is a cloud named Henry, who zooms around the environment grabbling coins and avoiding obstacles. Why does a cloud have to avoid anything? Isn't it almost entirely gaseous and prone to flow around stuff? Who cares, you can dress it up in a hat! IAP goes up to about seven bucks.

Can -you- control the winds? We challenge you to take control of Henry the Cloud as you propel him through the sky in this exciting free-to-play mobile game featuring a unique gameplay mechanic. Swipe to create wind bursts to maneuver Henry around mountains and hot air balloons or even larger threats like Joe the Cumulonimbus and Pete the Pelican.

Dustoff Heli Rescue 2

As with the original Dustoff Heli Rescue, the point of this game is to get to a drop or evacuation point, pick up soldiers, and get out... after blowing the blocky hell out of everything in between. (So if you're just going to blow everything up, why is infantry there at all?) The sequel doesn't improve on the Minecraft graphics, but it has 30 levels with more choppers and weapons. The game is free with IAP that only goes up to ten bucks.

Take off with your rescue helicopter, be the hero chopper pilot, and save the life of the wounded soldiers in the battlefield. Fight against tanks and trucks firing their weapons at you and transport the friendly army back to their base. In Dustoff Heli Rescue 2 you can:

  • Save hostages being held in Prisoner of War camps.
  • Combat in military attacks in the desert, forests, mines, swamps and fjords.
  • Build radio towers and bridges.
  • Protect the friendly truck and VIP convoy before the enemies can reach and demolish them.
  • Find and transport the stolen trucks and cargo and take them back to the HQ.
  • Fight against the extreme weather conditions and fly in dust storm, heavy rain and snow blizzard.
  • Upgrade your weaponry, install various gun, missile and rocket weapons to protect the friendly soldiers.

Color Bots

In Color Bots, the player takes control of a robot shooting down lanes to stop the advance of... well, the Billy Crystal monster from Monsters, Inc. Though the game's 3D graphics can get quite complex, the setup and gameplay are fairly simple: slide along the platform to shoot down the lane you want, occasionally unleashing super attacks. Unlocking new robots and weapons is the core progression mechanic across 100 levels. The game is free with IAP that goes up to ten bucks.

Can you stop the Globber invasion? Unlock and upgrade tons of robots, each with their own unique weapons and abilities designed specifically to defeat the marauding aliens. Swipe to match colors, activate devastating special powers, and unleash a massive arsenal in this fast-paced shooter.

  • One handed gameplay - easy to learn, hard to master.
  • Frantic and fast-paced action.
  • Unlock and upgrade ten uniques robots - each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Explore five planets in a campaign that spans over 100 levels.

Code Breaker Ultimate

This is a new version of a very old puzzle game, challenging players to figure out the code by a series of yes-no elimination. It has a lot of the guesswork and logic of something like Minesweeper, but in a much more linear fashion. This version includes multiple difficulty levels (more balls on each line for more difficulty). It's free with no in-app purchases.

The challenge requires tactics and strategy to uncover the hidden code, are you up to the job? Are you the top code breaker? If you're looking for a game to give your mind a workout or to burn some time whilst waiting for the bus then this modern take on the classic Mastermind game is just for you. And this family-friendly version comes with NO in app purchases.

  • Four board layouts.
  • Select the number of different colors used.
  • Master your mind and become the ultimate code breaker. Try it now.

SkillTwins Football Game

Today I learned that in British vernacular, a "skiller" is a soccer (football) player with an excellent ability to quickly change the path of the ball to navigate around opponents and score goals. SkillTwins is all about performing these "skills" in levels with the standard three-star point setup. It's a unique way to make soccer work well in a mobile format, and the graphics and controls are pretty solid - each move was motion captured from a pair of celebrity skillers. IAP for currency goes up to $22.

THE SKILLTWINS FOOTBALL GAME is finally here. DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE and become the world famous football twins: SkillTwins - Josef & Jakob. They have impressed football legends such as Neymar, Özil, Zidane, Xavi and Pep Guardiola to name a few. SkillTwins also inspire millions of fans all around the world. Now it's your chance to be the best skiller on the planet. Do amazing skill combos, trickshots, nutmegs, pannas, ground moves and other skills to beat the opponents to advance in the SkillTwins World.

AdventureQuest 3D

AdventureQuest 3D is a cross-platform MMORPG in the style of World of Warcraft. It's been developed for the PC, iOS, and Android with concurrent players on all platforms. It's fairly simple as MMOs go - it's clear that the game was intended for mobile first - but if you'd like a freebie role-playing game that you can progress through on your phone and computer, this is it. The title is in open beta right now, and in-app purchases go up to $50.

The world of Lore is yours to explore. AdventureQuest 3D is the true cross-platform fantasy MMORPG from the creators of the original 2D Flash web game. Silicon Valley: Billionaire

Have you always wanted to be a Silicon Valley douchebag, swilling Starbucks and abusing underlings as you bounce from startup to startup? Well here's your chance. This management game puts you in control of your very own tech company, hiring and firing star employees, manipulating your investments, and expanding your offices in Tiny Tower fashion. The game's pixel graphics are tired and in-app purchases go up to $100, so maybe this one doesn't get a "buy" recommendation.

Dreams do come true. Become the hottest CEO in Silicon Valley. Grow your company to become a billionaire. Expand your business. Stack office spaces. Upgrade interiors. Hire, fire, educate, promote, vacation and more. Whoever said being a CEO would be easy? Not only make profit, but get investments and manage money. Startups are everywhere in Silicon Valley. Make big money investing in other players companies.

Sour Patch Kids: Candy Defense

Whoever makes Sour Patch Kids, their intention is clearly a hostile takeover of the 7-Eleven candy aisle by brute force. These tiny sour gummy bears are ruthlessly presented in every possible combination and variety. Now there's an officially licensed tower defense game starring the Sour Patch Kids and it's... fine. I guess. It's extremely basic with just one lane and pre-determined tower points, so fans of the genre won't find much challenge or variety. IAP goes up to $5.49, or about two bags' worth.

A horde of enemy gummies has invaded and must be defeated with your sour powers. Shield yourself with a coat of sour armor and defend your yard against hordes of gummy bunnies, bears, spiders and other sweet fiends using a vast arsenal of towers and heroes at your command. Fight your way through the yard, and sweeten the deal with different towers and heroes. Your gummy opponents will pucker up as you command your heroes and face legendary monsters on a mission to guard the yard from the sugary savages.

NHL SuperCard 2K17

Not content to keep its odd card collection/management game restricted to basketball, 2K now has a hockey version. It's essentially a sports management game that swaps out drafting for collecting cards and powering them up. I honestly can't see the appeal, but fans of the NHL and/or collectible cards might get into it. Predictably, IAP goes up to one hundred dollars.

The premier NHL card battling game is back with NHL SuperCard 2K17. Featuring more than 400 new player cards, exhilarating game modes and a vastly improved visual style, NHL SuperCard 2K17 puts you on the ice and into the action like never before.

  • Over 400 Player cards.

InMind VR 2 (Daydream)

Now that Google's Daydream system is almost here, developers are shifting towards it and away from Cardboard. InMind 2 is sort of a whimsical take on Fantastic Voyage, bringing players into the inner workings of the brain and nervous system with a virtual reality tour. The Daydream setup allows for a bit more direct control for better puzzles with a focus on brain chemistry. It's free with a single $3 in-app purchase.

Even one small molecule can change a person's destiny. InMind 2 is an adventure game about a scientific journey inside the emotions chemistry of human brain. You'll take part in the process of one teenager named John becoming an adult, and help shape John's future self, while experiencing an exciting journey inside the human brain. His future is in your hands.

Vector 2 Premium

Vector 2 is a popular runner with fantastic silhouette animation. The original release had a freemium model, but this version has unlimited "energy" and free extras for the $2 price tag.

No ads, unlimited energy and free upgrade kits. Vector 2 features intense gameplay with procedurally generated environment and lifelike animations in a dystopian world. Descend through a huge and complex research facility and try to get out alive – over and over again. There’s no good run without good equipment. Try out experimental high-tech gear that will help you survive a little longer and discover ways to empower it.

Unreleased games

Editor's note: the following are unreleased games that we've found hidden in the bowels of the Play Store. They're in a playable alpha or beta state and probably not intended for thousands of new users, so don't be surprised if they're a long way away from a finished state. They're presented here (and not included in the main part of the roundup) as more of a novelty than anything else. Check them out - or don't - and enjoy.
