Spingun is a twin-stick shooter... without the twin sticks. Its control scheme and pixelated graphics are more of an homage to Asteroids, though the action and effects soon ramp up to a point that was impossible way back then. Only masochists need apply for this game that delights in killing the player with an overwhelming amount of enemies and bullets, but those who survive will get some sweet upgrades. Free with $3 in-app purchases.
Two buttons. One spaceship. Zero chance to survive. Goliath is attacking your planet, but you've heroically stayed behind with your ship so your family can evacuate. SPIN and GUN your way to victory. Fly and steer with either single button, or press both buttons at once to fire your ship’s powerful blaster gun. Grab powerups to launch missiles, plasma balls, and flames at your foes. Blast em to bits quick to repair your ship. How long can you fight them off?
Piranh.io is basically a skinned version of Agar.io where you play as fish instead of amoebas. Swim around, eat stuff smaller than you, avoid being eaten by stuff that's bigger than you. The formula is surprisingly engaging, especially in the online multiplayer mode, and this version includes a few powerups to spice up the game's combat. A hefty $6.40 in-app purchase will get rid of advertising.
Dive in and play online against other players to become the biggest piranha (or shark) in the sea. Survive as long as possible by eating swimmers and smaller fish. But remember: size isn’t everything in Piranh.io. Even the smallest piranha can defeat the biggest shark with POWERUPS. Use electricity to zap your enemies. Charge up the laser cannon, go ‘Pew pew pew’ and defeat everyone else. It’s all possible in this io real-time multiplayer game.
3Box tries to reinvent the wheel, bringing a bite-sized mobile approach to Tetris. It's a tall order, and for me, it isn't quite filled. While breaking the block puzzles down into bite-sized chunks and removing the rotation tool are interesting, skipping the timed element takes all the challenge out for anyone who's used to the original game. At least it's free.
Do you remember? The joy of making blocks into lines. The excitement of lines vanished. The old tetris joy is back. Come and enjoy the game. This time, with simple one touch, You can get the same joy in smartphone. Over 40 characters, 100 stages, and special blocks never seen before awaits you. This is not the tetris, but the 3box. This game is categorized as a casual puzzle game.
Drop Flip is a super-minimal puzzle game where you try to get a ball in a bucket. It's sort of like pinball, but the objective is to tweak the stage for a single target rather than a rolling point meter. It's fairly straightforward and the difficulty curves across 100 levels. It's free with $3 in-app purchases.
Drop Flip is a delightful game chock-full of silly physics contraptions. Move, flip and manipulate obstacles of every shape and size as you accomplish the not-so-simple task of dropping a ball into a bucket.
- Over 100 crazy fun levels ranging from easy to near-impossible.
- Complex gameplay wrapped in colorful, minimalistic visuals .
- Joyful music with catchy sound effects.
- Leaderboards and achievements.
- Attempt to get a “Ball-in-One” or “Ball-in-Two”.
- Made for absolutely everyone.
Ugh, enough with the Verby Noun games already! This one is all about a wanabe Evel Knievel, riding and stunting through the desert on his customized motorcycle. It's fairly straightforward, but the two-button system is easy enough and watching the over-the-top crashes is entertaining. Free with IAP that goes up to $3.50.
Poor Phil Faily has had a lot of bad luck with cars... now he has a Motorbike. While doing some sightseeing on a motorbike in the Nevada desert, Phil is forced off the road, plunging him over the edge of a steep embankment and into a world of dangerous hazards and obstacles. In this physics based motorbike game you must maneuver an endless mountainside dodging hazardous terrain such as cacti, rocks, traffic and trains resulting in some fun and hilarious near misses and crashes.
The Micro Machines franchise is better remembered than most licensed games, thanks to a focus on fun and simple racing. This mobile version comes from Chillingo and Codemasters, and the top-down action focuses more on combat than straight racing, a la Mario Kart. Cars can be augmented and upgraded with parts and weapons from G.I. Joe, and up to four players can race online or duke it out in NERF-branded battle arenas. Because it's an EA title, in-app purchases go up to a hundred bucks.
The legendary MICRO MACHINES gameplay returns in this all-new multiplayer combat racer from Codemasters. Race across 18 fun-filled tracks including breakfast tables, desktops, pool tables and kitchen sinks in a vast array of tiny, but powerful, MICRO MACHINES. Original creators, Codemasters, have lovingly updated the classic MICRO MACHINES gameplay for mobile devices. All the rivalry, excitement, humor and fun of the games that first appeared in the 1990’s is back.
Star Squad's customizable ship-to-ship combat shares a lot with games like FTL, though here it's the central point of the game. Your ship can be upgraded more or less continuously with new weapons, defenses, and passive enhancements, and hero crew units will give you strategic advantages against computer and online opponents. The Buck Rogers art style and open world are interesting, but $100 IAP will undoubtedly bring balance issues to online play.
Star Squad is a science fiction real-time strategy game with beautiful 3D art and fast-paced combat. Go to war against Emperor Titanfist by assembling the best crew you can find, customizing your star ship, and exploring the galaxy. Travel from planet to planet and combat enemy space ships. Strategically lower their defenses and weapons to eventually bring down their engine. Dozens of charming crew members will join you in your fight as you do battle in full 3D.
[Insert joke about the differences between American football and soccer HERE.] Now that we have that out of the way, check out this bog-standard soccer game. Real Football bills itself as a sim, and goes out of its way to list console-style features like a manager mode. But with asynchronous multiplayer (read: leaderboards), $100 in-app purchases, and a dearth of licensed teams, it's ringing a bit hollow.
Experience Real Football both on and off the pitch, all in a 20MB package. The latest edition of the free soccer simulation is here with a whole set of new features. Build your dream team and lead them to become champions of the world. Develop team facilities, recruit star players, improve their abilities, challenge yourself in the World Arena, and many more. Stunning visuals: 3D stadiums, polished shadows, detailed textures, and spectators all come together to provide an exciting atmosphere.
They're still selling Skylanders toys? Apparently so. But it looks like they've run out of ideas for the collectible critters, because this Activision game tasks the player with making new ones. The creator app lets players mix and match parts from the various Skylanders sets and then import them into the Imaginators console game, or even order real figures or cards based on the design. Neat.
Unleash your Imagination. Create your own Skylanders and bring them to life using the SkylandersTM Creator companion app. Magically import your favorite creations from the Skylanders Imaginators video game or create new Imaginators in the Skylanders Creator App. Collect Sensei Skylanders and Mystery Chests to unlock new parts, gear and weapons. Showcase and share your creations with your friends on all of your favorite social media platforms.
Editor's note: the following are unreleased games that we've found hidden in the bowels of the Play Store. They're in a playable alpha or beta state and probably not intended for thousands of new users, so don't be surprised if they're a long way away from a finished state. They're presented here (and not included in the main part of the roundup) as more of a novelty than anything else. Check them out - or don't - and enjoy.

The Bug Butcher
The Bug Butcher is an intense action shooter, wrapped in stylistic 2D art, and smeared with juvenile humor where timing and fierce reflexes are paramount in protecting your fragile squishy body. The gameplay has an extremely simple core mechanic that is easy to understand, but hard to master. Plus, who doesn’t love a universe where you wield a beefy arsenal of military grade weaponry.
