The original Sky Force came out in 2014, and it was hugely popular with more than 5 million downloads. It was free, but had reasonably gentle IAPs. Now, the sequel has arrived. It too is a free-to-play game, and the way in-app purchases are structured is, again, not terrible.

If you've played a top-down shooter in the past you'll know what to expect here—drag your plane around the screen and shoot everything. Sky Force Reloaded keeps the rescue mechanic from the first game, which requires you to collect human survivors in between blasting everything out of the air. The visuals have gotten an upgrade, and there's more customization for your plane.

I've only played Sky Force Reloaded for a few minutes, but it doesn't seem badly tuned for a free-to-play game (there's only one currency type). The in-app purchases top out at $1.99, and they aren't even available for the first few levels. I'm not crazy about the upgrade timers, but I will grant they aren't nearly as infuriatingly long as some games.
