The Moto G4, Moto G 4th Edition, or Moto G 2016, regardless of what you want to call it, has leaked several times already. We first got the blurry cam snap, then the graphics render, followed by more recent shots of the retail box and the retail unit of the G4 Plus variant. Now things are official after an event in New Delhi where Lenovo, technically not Motorola, announced the new G4 and G4 Plus.

The Plus, in the case of the new Moto G devices doesn't refer to the size of the phones or displays as we've been used to. Instead it refers to the devices' features: the Moto G4 has a 13MP camera on the back and no fingerprint sensor, whereas the G4 Plus has a 16MP rear shooter (with laser and phase-detection autofocus and a manual shooting mode) and a fingerprint sensor.

Just like the leaks showed us, the G4 Plus carries that square fingerprint scanner on the front, below the display. The sensor is just that, it doesn't double as a button. Instead, Lenovo is still using on-screen navigation keys. The decision to not put the sensor on the back of the phone might have probably stemmed from the fact that the entire back is removable and replaceable with colored Moto Shell alternatives (the phone actually ships with an extra one in the box). So a permanent sensor there might not have been aesthetically pleasing or technically possible.

As for the specs, you should expect a high mid-range affair from the G4 and G4 Plus: a 5.5" Full HD 1080p display covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a Snapdragon 617 1.5GHz octa-core processor, 16/32/64GB of storage with MicroSD slot, and 2/3/4GB of RAM. While the models differ on their rear cameras, they both have a 5MP camera with wide-angle field-of-view on the front for selfies and other self-involved photos. They're both powered by a 3000mAh battery with Turbo Power for fast charging, but only the G4 Plus ships with the TurboCharger in the box.

On the software side, Lenovo have kept the same bloat-free interface of Motorola's days, going for a pure Android look and a UI that feels and works as close to AOSP as possible. Both devices are running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The Moto G4's pricing will be announced later and available next month. The G4 Plus, on the other hand, will cost Rs. 13499 (approx $200) for the 16GB/2GB version and Rs. 14499 (approx. $225) for the 32GB/3GB one. It will be available exclusively on Amazon India tonight.

If two Moto G4 variants and 3 Moto G4 Plus ones weren't enough, it seems there's another Moto G4 Play with a 5" 720p display, Snapdragon 410, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage with MicroSD slot, 8MP rear shooter and 5MP front one, 2800mAh battery, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. This version seems headed to the USA in mid-summer 2016.

All of the Moto G4 versions, be it the regular, Plus, or Play, have water repellent nano-coating if you were wondering about that. They all come in both black and white color variants with possible Moto Maker customization in certain countries. And they will all be released in the USA in mid-summer 2016, as per Motorola's US website.
