I never thought there would be a day when I'd know this much about US carriers and MVNOs, but this is what happens when you work on a US-based site like Android Police. Republic Wireless though comes a lot less often on our radar, and I just discovered why. Until now, the MVNO only had a couple of devices to choose from. Literally, a couple: the Motorola Moto G (3rd Gen) and Moto E (2nd Gen). It also seems to be ahead of its times, relying on Wi-Fi calling and piggy-backing on Sprint's network when Wi-Fi isn't available.

But things are about to improve by a few leaps and bounds for Republic Wireless. The MVNO just announced two major changes to its network: the expansion of its product portfolio in July and the addition of a second "nationwide GSM carrier" that has "the fastest 4G LTE in the country." Yeah, Republic is adamant about not naming T-Mobile, but all things point to the magenta carrier.

As to the new devices that will be supported on Republic Wireless, these are: the Moto X Pure Edition, Huawei Nexus 6P, LG Nexus 5X, Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016), Galaxy S6, S7, and S7 Edge. Sure, some of these will almost be a year old come July, but they're still bringing more choice and modern variety to Republic's line-up. You'll be able to buy one of these from the MVNO directly or bring a device you already own and activate it on the network.

It's worth pointing out though that Republic Wireless' hybrid network doesn't function like Google's Fi, so don't expect to switch between Sprint and T-Mobile that second GSM carrier and Wi-Fi seamlessly. Instead, depending on your area, you'll either be given a CDMA handset to work on Sprint or a GSM handset to work on T-Mobile, with Wi-Fi calling taking precedence over any cellular connection whenever it's available.
