Reddit: The Official App
Reddit has needed a decent app for years, and it's had plenty of them, albeit provided by hard-working third-party developers. The official version is finally here and... it's okay. Just okay. Not surprisingly, Reddit's own effort to make its somewhat text-heavy interface work on phones and tablets lags well behind apps that have been doing it for a long time. It's a serviceable way to access the content, but there are much better options all over the Play Store.
Reddit anywhere with the official app (even from the office restroom). Get the latest news, trends, and memes on the Internet first on Reddit. You get to decide what’s worthy: top content rises to the front page thanks to your upvotes. There’s a Reddit community for every subject imaginable: your favorite sports team, relationship advice, memes, silly gifs, the latest in news and politics—all in real time. What’s that you say? “What about a community dedicated solely to photographs of cats standing on their hind legs?” We got that, too. (Cat.)
Quote | Feedly RSS reader
Android Police coverage: Quote, From The Developer Of Fenix, Is A Slick News Reader For Feedly And Inoreader
Fenix is my personal favorite Twitter client, so hearing that the developer had a new RSS reader made my ears perk up like a cat near a can opener. That said, Quote doesn't stand out from the other Feedly clients aside from a quite nice Material Design interface. Everything you need is there, including caching and multiple themes... except there's no scrolling homescreen widget. Damn, guess it's back to Reader+ for me.
Quote is a clean and modern news reader for your Feedly and Inoreader accounts.
- Full screen reading experience
- Painless navigation with simple gestures
- Dark and light themes
- Readability support
- Articles and images caching for offline reading
- Article thumbnails preview
- Search and add new RSS feeds
Additional features for supporter:
- Ad-free experience
- Support for multiple accounts
- Additional themes
Velociraptor - Map Speed Limit
For some reason there's no speed limit display built into the Google Maps app. Luckily this is Android - you can always roll your own. Velociraptor (get it?) does just that with a sort of overlaid widget that tracks your location and displays both your current speed and the official speed limit for the road you're driving on (according to HERE and OpenStreetMap data, anyway). Now you'll never get another speeding ticket... or at least you'll never have an excuse for getting one.
Velociraptor is a floating speed limit monitor, using OpenStreetMap and HERE Maps data.
• Polished Material Design
• Automatically displays in any apps you choose
• Customize style: US and International
• Speeding tolerance (0%-20%)
Wrong or missing speed limit? Go to OpenStreetMap's website on your computer to edit the data: https://www.openstreetmap.org
Android Police coverage: Linguee's Multilingual Dictionary Comes To The Play Store With A Well Defined Feature Set
The Lingee multi-language translation dictionary is a popular web-based tool for linguistic students. This official Android app follows most of the visual style from the web service and incorporates pronunciation tools and contextual examples, as well as a much-appreciated offline mode for specific dictionary sets. Our resident polyglot says that the search tool, which allows for searching in multiple languages at once, is particularly well done.
Linguee is a new kind of dictionary app for French-English, Spanish-English and other language pairs. You will find reliable translations in the shortest time, even when you're offline. Dictionary for Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Dutch, and Polish. All dictionaries are bidirectional - you search simultaneously in Spanish-English and English-Spanish.
If you're the kind of person who very carefully invests money for the future, you're also probably the kind that likes to obsessively keep an eye on it. If so, this app will let you see how your investment money is doing, so long as you've put in on one of three very specific services. The visual presentation is impressive, somehow making a bunch of charts and numbers look trendy and exciting, and the "health" determination and long-term tools should be handy for investors.
LendingRobot Dashboard lets investors keep an eye on your investments in Peer Lending. Monitor the performance of your portfolio(s), see which notes are paying or getting late and get access to detailed information about each of them.
- Support for multiple Lending Club, Prosper, and Funding Circle accounts
- Unified view for multiple accounts holders
- Unique health graph keeps monitoring the proportion of notes in good standing
- Current and projected financial returns
- Evolution of total notes value and cash amount
- Time to maturity, average interest rate
Eat This Much - Meal Planner
One of the hardest things about dieting is portion control. Eating nothing but grapefruits won't help you lose weight if you eat six hundred of them a day. "Eat This Much" uses some easy-to-understand nutritional science to make it simple to see how much of what food you should be greedily shoving into your gob. The app can adjust for various diets from Atkins to vegan, and it can auto-generate a grocery list for your next supermarket excursion.
Put your diet on autopilot with Eat This Much, the automatic meal planner. Tell us your diet goals, the foods you like, your budget, and what your schedule looks like, and we'll automatically generate a complete meal plan to meet your requirements. It's like having a personal diet assistant.
• Generate meal plans that meet your calorie and macro targets in seconds
• Nutrition targets can be set up for weight loss, maintenance, or muscle / bodybuilding
• Follow any eating style or create your own
• Choose from paleo, atkins/keto, vegetarian, vegan, and Mediterranean diets
• Filter out foods/recipes based on allergies and dislikes, including gluten-free
• Set the available cooking time for each meal to match your schedule
• Take the anxiety out of picking what to eat
• Personalize any of our recipes or add your own
• Don't like our suggestions? Easily swap them out or configure the meal planner to only use foods you like using Recurring Foods
Slidebox - Photo Organizer
Android Police coverage: Gesture-Based Photo Organizer 'Slidebox' Swipes Into The Play Store
Slidebox is a photo management app with a gesture-based twist. It's gained a respectable following on the iOS side of the aisle before coming over to Android. The main purpose is to separate the wheat from the chaff, quickly letting users compare photos side by side in order to select the best from a group and delete the rest. Photos can also be organized into your existing albums and folders.
Organize your gallery photos with quick gestures. Scroll through your photos in fullscreen and swipe up to delete unwanted photos or pick an album to sort into. Compare similar/duplicate photos and quickly and delete them with a swipe. It’s that easy. Swipe up to put an unwanted photo into trash. Deleting trashed photos help you get rid of unwanted or duplicate photos from your device to free up space.
Android Police coverage: Greenify Developer Releases 'Nevolution' Notification Control App
Nevolution is a platform that creates a sort of alternate for Android's stock notification system. It allows end users to inject more advanced notification capabilities into apps that don't support them by themselves - think of it as a fairly safe ROM-hacky way of telling boring, non-functional notifications to straighten up and fly right. It doesn't need root access, but at the moment the app is a bit tricky to navigate.
Nevolution is an open platform for Android to evolve the notification experience of existing apps, in a creative developer-independent way via community-driven plug-ins, without the involvement of the original app developer. Android supports highly rich notification experience, and the feature set expanded in almost every major Android versions. Unfortunately, most apps only use a small set of limited capabilities of notification, rendering them less elegant and even ugly on your modern Android devices.
With a name like "Project Madeira" from a huge, resource-laden corporation like Microsoft, you'd think that this app was something revolutionary and exciting. And it is, so long as your definition of "revolutionary and exciting" is the same as "business sales manager for Office 365." The app allows Office to keep track of inventory, expenditures, billing, and the like while saving data to the cloud for access on PCs and other gadgets.
Microsoft is on a mission to reinvent productivity with a comprehensive business management solution that works right within Office 365. Start your preview of Project “Madeira” to see how easy it is to manage your sales, finances, billing, purchasing, and inventory -- all without leaving Outlook. This Project “Madeira” app for Android tablet and Android phone extends the experience to your mobile and touch-enabled devices for productivity on the go.
Android Police coverage: LinkedIn Tries To Get College Kids Hooked Early With The LinkedIn Students App
Sorry, college students, but it's time to face the facts: if you work in certain fields, eventually you will have to make a LinkedIn profile. This official Students app will ease you into the planet's most annoying professional network by making some vague noises that sound like career development, including profiles of recent grads, info on companies that hire people with your major, and alternate career options... which you might want to consider in this job market.
Introducing LinkedIn Students, the new app to discover and launch your career. LinkedIn Students will help you explore career paths and tackle your job search with confidence. And that's just the beginning:
- Explore suggested roles based on your education to uncover unexpected opportunities
- Get hand-picked career advice articles written just for students
- View the profiles of recent alumni with your major to see their career path and get advice
- See the companies that regularly hire students from your school
- Get job listings appropriate for your major and year
And every day, you get new personalized recommendations so you easily stay ahead in your post-college job search.
Initially restricted to the new HTC 10, this first-party app is now available on more or less all Android 5.0 devices. Not that it's particularly notable: it will clear out inactive programs in RAM and clean up cache and unused files for more storage space, but that's about it. There's nothing in here you couldn't already do with other apps.
Does your device seem sluggish? Are you overwhelmed by apps and system components that feel out of your control? Boost+ is your free Android performance expert that smartly tunes performance, improves power consumption, clears unused junk files to reclaim storage and adds security on an app-by-app basis on any Android device.
Scarlett for Chromecast
Scarlett bills itself as a centralized homescreen for your Chromecast dongle, and not (as I initially assumed) a fan app for the late great Vivien Leigh. Nope, it's intended to be streamed to Chromecast or Android TV, wherein it will easily allow you to watch the latest and greatest videos from video apps like YouTube, along with more social fare like Twitter and Reddit. There's also an autoplay feature if you'd simply like to veg out.
Scarlett is an intelligent homescreen for your Google Cast device (Chromecast, Nexus Player, or Android TV) to discover what's new from all your favorite apps. Just cast and let it go. Supported apps include YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, and much more. Cast to Chromecast, Nexus Player, or Android TV from your Android mobile phone or tablet. Scarlett mixes new and personal content in the cloud across services.
Samsung Safety Screen
This is an app that tells you you're holding your phone too close to your screen. Oh, and also it presumes you are a child. It seems like a bit of a mixed message since the app is developed by Samsung, a company that's currently selling a $200 gadget that holds your phone three inches away from your eyes. In a show of kid-friendly solidarity, the app is compatible with non-Samsung phones and tablets.
Kids are spending more time these days watching content on electronic devices. While devices like tablets and smartphones are adding a lot to their experience of growing up, there is an increasingly problematic behavior of kids sitting too close to the devices. The behavior could cause serious damage to their eyes/vision. Some of the problems that kids could face are: computer vision syndrome, strain to the brain, and attacks to the cornea.
Picnic is another photo and video manager that tries to make things as simple as possible. Right now it's pretty barebones aside from support for 360-degree photos, but the interface is simple and appealing, and the developer plans to add some more advanced functions in later updates.
Picnic is simple but complete. View photos, videos, GIFs and also 360° panoramas. Manage all your medias in a few click, hide your private folders or view all the details.
Features that will be added:
- Recycle bin
- Drive backup
- Cloud storages
Cloud Phone for Business
Cloud Phone is a number forwarding-slash-VOIP service that intends to allow small business owners to answer their work phones without needing a second line or device. It's nothing revolutionary, but the interface is simple and appealing. The app includes easy live forwarding tools and access to voicemails. Keep in mind that incoming and outgoing calls will go over whatever data connection you have at the moment, so answering the line in a poor coverage area might be a bad idea.
The Cloud Phone mobile app is a business phone system in your pocket with unique and innovative features. Now you can use one device to manage your business and personal calls while on the go. Cloud Phone answers and routes your calls professionally while giving you the flexibility to communicate with your customers where and when you choose.
"Macronutrients" seems to be the latest fancy name for a painfully simple nutritional concept. While a normal person might be able to guess at the level of protein and carbs in, say, a ham sandwich, this app is specifically designed to allow users to obsessively micromanage their intake with selections from local restaurants. There's a navigation system and a submission tool if you'd like to help out your fellow macro eaters.
FindMyMacros is the mobile app that finds nearby meals based on macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat). Input macronutrient ranges you are looking for and the app presents all restaurants which offer meals that fit that criteria. No more declining lunch invites from co-workers or declining dinner with friends and family. Instantly find meals that fit your “macros”. Build your profile by submitting meals to the database.
Second verse, same as the first. I feel like I've covered half a dozen of these services that import an album of photos and turn them into a printed book for you. Well here's one more, and this one works natively with local snapshots or albums on Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, or Google Photos. The hook? Everyone gets a free 20-page photo book every month just to try out the service... as long as you pay $8 for shipping. Bigger, longer, and uncut albums cost extra.
Everyone loves photo books, but making them has always been cumbersome, time-consuming and costly. The FreePrints Photobooks app changes all that with the fastest, easiest way to create beautiful photo books—right on your Android phone or tablet. And best of all, you get one 20-page 5x7 standard softcover photo book every month for FREE. You pay only a small shipping charge. There are no catches—no subscriptions or commitments. Just free photo books.
Recolor - Coloring Book
The adult coloring book fad has somewhat passed me by, and reproducing the experience digitally seems like it would be extremely frustrating unless you happen to have a Galaxy Note or similar stylus-equipped device. But if you do, and you want an app that offers some robust coloring tools and a wide selection of pre-drawn assets to fill in, then go for it.
Join now to millions of people who are rediscovering the simple relaxation and joy of coloring. Recolor features over 600 unique coloring pictures and introduces new pictures EVERY DAY. Organized into themed chapters, with range in complexity from beginner to expert-level, the pictures feature Mandalas, Animals, Bouquets, Ornates, Lowpolys, Mortes and much more.
StockX - Buy & Sell Sneakers
"An actual stock market for sneakers." As in tennis shoes. Okay, if you say so. I've heard that there's an obsessive community for designer sneakers, but I still think "stock market" is a bit of a glorified term for what is basically a specialized auction service. It also offers "deep insight and market analysis," which I assume includes pointers like the fact that sizes 9-11 for popular men's shoes are a bit hard to find.
StockX is an actual STOCK MARKET for sneakers. StockX is the fastest, easiest, and safest way to buy and sell sneakers. No fakes. No chargebacks. No worries . . . it’s hakuna matata for sneakers. What is a stock market? A ‘stock market’ is a unique method of connecting buyers and sellers – it’s a live, Bid/Ask marketplace. On StockX, just like the New York Stock Exchange, sellers place Asks and buyers placed Bids. When a Bid and an Ask meet, a sale happens automatically and instantaneously.
As Yahoo continues its wild descent into identity crisis, the executives keep spinning the Wheel of Corporate Focus. This week it landed on "e-sports," presumably hoping to suck a little money out of the trend before the company is chopped up and sold to Verizon. The app covers fake sports as if they were real sports, complete with team and game trackers, videos and news stories, and semi-live coverage of major tournaments.
Yahoo Esports is the home for real-time tournament broadcast coverage, breaking news, highlights, and league scores for all your favorite games. Instantly watch video highlights, get expert commentary, tournament analysis, competitive strategy, alerts and live scoring for every match. If it affects the game, we're on it and bringing it to you first. Features include:
Here's a first-party app from Google that allows developers to register Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons (which are similar to QR codes or RFID tags, only a little more functional) and register them with Google's growing beacon service. If you're not a developer, just ignore this app and trust us when we say it's pretty neat.
Beacon Tools lets you register your Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons with the Google Beacon Registry and create small attachments for them. As a developer, you can then scan for these beacons in your application to ‘serve’ or deliver the registered attachments when the beacons are seen using public APIs such as Google Nearby or the Proximity Beacon API.
Manufacturer And Tie-In Apps
Android Police coverage: HTC Vive's VR Headset Gets A Phone Companion App For Notifications And Reminders
The HTC Vive is here! ... and it doesn't work with Android. Not in the conventional sense, anyway: it's intended as a VR tool for PC games, like the Oculus Rift. But the Vive can still connect to a smartphone as a Bluetooth headset and notification client, allowing VR fans to take calls and view notifications while they're immersed.
Don't miss what's important IRL while you're in VR. To get essential notifications in the world of virtual reality, just connect your phone with your HTC Vive. Notifications about phone calls, text messages and calendar events pop up without interrupting play and appear in the Vive tab on your System Dashboard so you can view them later too.
My Live Case
Android Police coverage: Google Announces Custom 'Live Cases' For Nexus 6, 5X, And 6P—Previously Leaked As Google Workshop
It's taken a while, but Google's Live Cases for Nexus phones are finally available. This app allows owners to select which wallpaper is automatically applied when the case is used, and which app is launched when the case's built-in NFC button is activated. Note that this app doesn't allow you to customize or buy the case itself - that's a web tool.
Make the most out of your Live Case for Nexus. Download the app to see your case design come to life on your phone’s screen with the companion live wallpaper. For the Photos Live Case, enjoy a customizable picture gallery. For the Places Live Case, see a stylized map of your current location. Customize your case’s shortcut button to launch your camera, maps, or open any app on your phone.
Samsung Milk VR
Android Police coverage: Samsung Milk VR Lets You Watch Virtual Reality Content On Your Phone Without Any Headset
Samsung is basically just flailing around at this point, trying to find something, anything useful to do with that Milk brand it has spent so much money on. The latest card toss is a gallery of 360-degree videos that can be viewed in 2D with a standard phone or in "virtual reality" with a Gear VR headset.
Now access Samsung Milk VR’s amazing library of 360 degree, immersive videos even when you don’t have your Samsung Gear VR nearby. The Samsung Milk VR mobile app allows you to discover, search, download, and play 360 video content on your Samsung phone anytime and anywhere. Even download your favorite videos in the mobile app so they are ready for viewing the next time you use your Gear VR.
Host for Samsung
Android Police coverage: TeamViewer Splits Samsung Support Off Into Two New Apps
Samsung phones natively support remote viewing and control via the popular TeamViewer client thanks to a bit of Special Sauce software. This app and the one below are fairly similar in that they both allow users to see and control a remote Samsung device from a PC, but this one is designed for semi-permanent access, while the Support app below is for more fleeting control, like when you're checking your grandma's device for errors or malware.
Mirror your Android devices to any computer from anywhere, at any time. Permanently access your unattended Android devices.

EZ Package Disabler (Samsung)
Some Samsung phones don't allow quite as much customization as dedicated Android fans desire. Specifically, they don't allow all the different built-in apps and packages to be manually disabled, as is possible in AOSP. This app allows users to disable those apps and packages, and it doesn't even need root permissions.
EZ Package Disabler is the best app to disable any packages on your Samsung without root. It means all the unwanted applications that come pre-installed on your phone can now be marked unavailable from running and updating. This process was previously only available for rooted devices but now can be performed on your stock Samsung in one or two simple steps.
Charm by Samsung
The Samsung Charm is a first-party activity manager that looks a lot like a Gear watch without the watch part. It's more or less the same thing as a Fitbit or any number of activity trackers, but it also includes an LED for some extremely basic notification functionality. This app manages said tracking and notifications and not much else.
Charm by Samsung app. manages basic settings of your Charm and shows data of your daily activity levels. This app helps you:
- Monitor daily activities with S Health App.

Awesome Wallpaper Liven Zedge
Here's a neat Live Wallpaper that uses standard photos for backdrops and adds weather overlays, filters, and particle effects. There's even a night mode and a double-tap gesture that allows users to manually advance through a series of photos. The premium version of the wallpaper is $2.
Awesome Liven Wallpaper adds particles and snow effects to your favourite background. Enjoy Instagramb>filters, and night galaxy stars on your screen.
