Nintendo is taking its sweet time in making its Miitomo app available to us US Americans. But the waiting, in so much as there has been waiting for a glorified Nintendo-only social network, is almost over. After a bit of exclusivity in Japan, the app is set to go live in the United States and "several other countries" on Thursday, March 31st. Want to know which other countries? So do we. Update: the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Canada.

Miitomo is a combination of a social network and a sort of Tamagotchi system. Users create or import Miis, the player avatars that Nintendo has been using since the launch of the original Wii, then customize them with physical characteristics and clothing. Then you send your Mii out into the big wide Miiverse, where it will talk with your Nintendo friends. And also strangers. It's kind of like a simulator for being a really terrible parent, only your child is a tiny cartoon version of you. Miis will ask each other questions, which can be answered by the real "players" behind them.

Playing around in Miitomo will earn you Platinum Points, a Nintendo virtual currency that can be spent on goodies on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS (assuming you connect your Miitomo account to an active Nintendo account). Players will also be able to access Nintendo's digital store on the web or phones, but at the moment it's only for purchasing games and themes which can then be used on the consoles... but not on PCs or smartphones. At least not yet.

Miitomo is live. Go get it from the Play Store - there's the app widget right down there.
