Fuhu's Nabi tablets are meant for kids, offering up a simple interface with big icons and bright colors. Instead of pricing its hardware low enough that you don't care if a toddler breaks it, Fuhu puts in the extra effort to make sure the device holds up under a kid's fingerprints. Now it has announced a successor to the aging Nabi 2, the Elev-8.

What's the name about? Fuhu says the Elev-8 sets a new standard in "Elevating" screen time to enriching playtime. Yeah, let's just gloss over the corporate speak.

This year's tablet has an 8-inch display with a 1280 by 800 resolution. Behind that screen is the thinnest tablet Fuhu has made, though the company doesn't say precisely how thick the hardware is. Press shots show a tablet that looks as though it were almost designed for adults, but that goes away once you surround the device in the plastic casing that protects it from the expected drops and spills.

The Elev-8 comes with 32GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card slot. On the back there's a 5MP camera capable of recording 1080p video. The front has a 2MP camera, and there's a microphone tucked away somewhere for kids to chat with friends and family.

Fortunately Nabi offers parents a set of controls that let them monitor their kid's usage, reduce screen time, and limit the use of specific apps. Parents can also give kids more time to play their favorite apps as a reward for engaging with the educational ones.

The Elev-8 starts at $170 at Walmart and Toys R Us, and it comes with six months of free Nabi Pass access if you buy one by December 31st. We have our hands on a review unit, so stay tuned.
