Vodafone UK announced its own Wi-Fi Calling service earlier this month, but support remains extremely limited. As of right now, the only devices listed are the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Fortunately that's about to change, though not by much. Android compatibility is coming in the form of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
Unfortunately, the carrier hasn't provided a timeframe other than sometime this autumn. Customers looking to register their interest are welcome to do so, but aside from that, it's just a matter of waiting. Once support arrives, you will be able to enable the functionality in your phone's settings.
Vodafone's Wi-Fi Calling will work wherever there's a strong enough Wi-Fi signal, despite the absence of cellular service. The person on the other end doesn't need Wi-Fi Calling to take your call. The service won't cost any extra to use as long as you have a Red bundle price plan, but minutes will still come out of your allowance. Think of this as a way to improve signal, not save money.
PRESS RELEASE
VODAFONE WI-FI CALLING TO LAUNCH ON SAMSUNG DEVICES
Vodafone UK today announced that its Wi-Fi Calling service will be coming this autumn to customers using the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. From today, customers can also register their interest in the service athttp://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/coming-soon/register/index.htm to receive further updates.
Vodafone’s nationwide Wi-Fi Calling enables customers to make and take calls in many more places – whether in a home with thick walls, in a basement or on the London Underground. If connected to Wi-Fi, customers can talk on their phone even if there is no mobile signal.
The introduction of Wi-Fi Calling follows the rollout of Vodafone’s nationwide provision of HD (High Definition) Voice technology, the roll-out of 4G+ (Carrier Aggregation) and the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal programme aimed at giving 100 remote communities mobile coverage for the first time.
In addition, Vodafone UK’s £2 billion investment programme during 2014 and 2015 is focussed on bringing stronger indoor and outdoor network coverage, and mobile internet access to more communities and businesses. This has already seen 4G extended to 648 cities, towns and districts as well as thousands of smaller communities across the UK.
