Spin Commander

Spin Commander is very much like Asteroids, without the thrusters or directional controls. Instead, you simply rotate your phone to aim your ship's weapons at the incoming bad guys. This is either great or horrible, depending on how much you like games with tilt and gyroscope controls. Spin Commander is notable for its local multiplayer, which requires both players to control the ship on the opposite player's screen.

--

*This game requires a Gyroscope (G-Sensor) on your device*

  • Spin to rotate your avatar,
  • shoot incoming enemies and
  • survive as long as you can.

Sounds simple? You should find out. This game is a unique experience. There is nothing similar out there. Train you skills in singleplayer mode or play together with a friend in multiplayer mode. In multiplayer mode you are controlling the avatar on your friend's device and he is controlling yours. Push away all enemies and survive as long as you can together.

Tiny Troopers 2: Special Ops

Chillingo is back with another top-down action shooter. Tiny Troopers 2 has you controlling adorable versions of those guys from Call of Duty. But in this game up to four at once will work in perfect unison to clear out the battlefield and/or zombie wasteland (of course). Upgrading weapons, recruiting specialized fighters, and finding powerful vehicles is part of the fun, but since this is an EA/Chillingo game, be prepared to hit a grinding halt or pay up to get through the tougher levels.

--

Tiny Troopers are back and better than ever. Decked out in new uniforms and sporting the latest in military hardware, the troopers are just itching to get back into the fight. Test your mettle and lead your troopers to victory in three thrilling special operations. Jump on a humvee and man the .50 Cal turret-gun as your driver makes his way through the enemy infested territories while avoiding tank shells and a rain of bullets. Customize your troopers with new uniforms and train them up the military ranks.

Formula Cartoon All Stars

Cartoon Network's latest Android entry is a kart racing game starring the current lineup of animated stars. The driving is top-down, a la Reckless Racing, but simple and colorful tracks help alleviate any problems stemming from the unconventional viewpoint and single-touch controls. Unfortunately Cartoon Network left out the multiplayer mode (leaderboards only) and left in the in-app purchases (just $3, but still something we don't like to see in games aimed at children).

--

Get ready to race with your favorite Cartoon Network characters on spectacular 3D tracks full of action and adrenaline in Formula Cartoon All-Stars. Enjoy a huge roster of characters, including Finn, Gumball, Mordecai, Ben 10, Jake, Rigby, Muscle Man, Steven Universe, Clarence and many more. Formula Cartoon All-Stars isn't just about speed. You'll also have to master the use of all sorts of crazy power-ups like ice cubes, bubbles, tomatoes and more. Take down your opponents and cruise into first place.

Warhammer Quest (50% Off)

This is a digital version of Warhammer Quest, a strategy board game you might remember from way back in the 90s. You command an elf, a dwarf, a barbarian, and a wizard as they delve into dungeons in the Warhammer setting (the original one, without spaceships and lasers). Kill bad guys, find loot, and try to make it out alive. It's a port of a PC game that costs $30 for the full set, and it looks like you'll have to pay every penny of it to get the whole game on Android.

--

Based on the classic tabletop game, Warhammer Quest is an addictive mix of role-playing and strategy. Half price launch discount for first week. Lead your group of brave adventurers through the perilous dungeons of the Warhammer World in the search for wealth and glory. Level up your party of heroes. Loot weapons, armour and mysterious artefacts from fallen enemies. Crush Orcs, Goblins, Trolls and more ferocious enemies. What perils lurk in the darkness? Only the mightiest warriors will survive.

Tiny Warriors

Amazingly, people are still interested in match three puzzle games. Somewhat less amazingly, developers continue to publish new ones... most of which are depressingly derivative and bursting with Candy Crush-style IAPs. Not so for Tiny Warriors, which mixes up the formula with some unique stage layouts, characters with different game-altering capabilities, and some actual freakin' effort. The game still has IAP, but it's not unreasonable.

--

The Tiny Warriors are trapped inside the digital world and need your help to escape. Choose from the 5 warriors, each with their own special abilities and make moves to create a path to freedom for your heroes. Fun for all ages.

  • 5 unique characters. Lion, Fox, Monkey, Porcupine and Eagle
  • Lots of fun and challenging puzzles
  • Leaderboards and Achievements
  • Beautiful graphics and animations

House of Grudge

Room escape games aren't my cup of tea, and neither are jump scares, but if you like both you should take a gander at House of Grudge. You wouldn't call it original, but this puzzle/room escape title features some quality 2D environments and the proper atmosphere for horror fans thanks to solid sound design. For just a dollar with no in-app purchases, you could do a lot worse if you're looking to spook yourself.

--

Coming in 2015, a horror game that will grab your attention and not let go. Solve tricks and riddles to unravel the mystery of the secret room. Secrets hidden in every room will lead you to the truth. Are you ready to face your fears and take up the challenge? In a quiet village just outside the city... A baby was born to a happy, young couple. And the seemingly everlasting happiness they felt was shattered into pieces by a tragic event...

Ramboat: Hero Shooting Game

SHOOT ALL THE THINGS... on a boat. You're on the boat, you shouldn't shoot it - if you do, you'll rapidly be minus one boat. This unapologetic arcade shooter simplifies elements of games like Contra and Metal Slug into pure mindless action, combined with the usual upgrades for your weapons and boa (or as it may be, marine mammal). It's too bad that the designers had to drag the experience down with the usual IAP grind and quasi-gambling mini-game.

--

Join Mambo and his crew in this action packed, arcade style, racing shooter and poker adventure. Jump, dive, and dodge obstacles and enemy fire while racing through a war zone on incredible vehicles and armed with sick weapons. In this shooter arcade game, experience all the action and adventure of fighting paratroopers, rocket launchers, and enemy subs with powerful weapons like the homing missile, machine gun, and flamethrower.

Groove Coaster 2

Groove Coaster 2 is a rhythm game that should appeal to fans of electronica, or electronic dance music, or dubstep, or whatever the cool people are calling all that stuff these days. The game play is pretty basic "tap-to-the-beat" stuff, but the non-linear visuals and psychedelic effects are interesting. A new game mode detects taps from nearby objects instead of the screen, which should be a big deal to anyone with a handy drumstick.

--

The award-winning Groove Coaster with its unique gameplay and multiple awards from all over the world has been upgraded with the new Original Style where you can use your surroundings as instruments to play the game. Intense and exhilarating gameplay by simply tapping in time with the music. Blast off through the music galaxy on a roller coaster of lights and sounds. Narborion 3

Holy crap, we found a game book that isn't made by Tin Man Games! Of course we cheated a little - this is the third game in the Narborion series, complete with some quite impressive 2D art and some touch-based action to flesh out the text that is such a central part of the genre. This one is expensive at nearly $9, but the tabletop RPG battles and expansive story should be worth it for fans of this very specific genre.

--

Narborion 3: The Swamp of Thousand Paths is playable as a stand-alone interactive gamebook, or you can continue your epic story you started in Book 1 and Book 2. Part turn-based battle game, part story-based RPG with riddles and minigames. Your hero embarks on a journey to The Swamp of Thousand Paths to investigate the mystery behind the death of a hobgoblin, three rune-sticks, crocodile-man and the gathering of Darkness.

Break A Brick

Break A Brick is an interesting combination of Space Invaders and Breakout that mixes things up enough to be interestingly separate from both of them. Grab and "rescue" the standard blocks and use bombs to blow up bricks, all while advancing forward a la space shooters. Different brick types help keep the stages fresh. You'll have to be strategic and have good timing to clear everything without accidentally blowing up the blocks you're trying to save.

--

Look what the cat's dragged in. The totally evil colorful bricks are invading peaceful Catverse. Don't trust their cuteness and help Rescue-Cat to prevent a catastrophe. This action puzzler is all about dexterity, savvy, many fancy graphics and a marvelous soundtrack - it's catlicious. Break A Brick is a dexterity and strategy based puzzle-shooter. Pull the evil Bricks into Rescue-Cat's spaceship and shoot them against the others to destroy every single Brick on the screen.

Space Spacy

Space Spacey is Space Invaders in reverse. You play the aliens instead of the humans, and the only real objective is to avoid getting shot (which is a pretty good goal no matter who or what you are). Power-ups can shield you as you progress towards your human opponent. It's an interesting idea, but the tilt-only controls are a bit of a turnoff.

Top Gear: Caravan Crush

This officially licensed Top Gear game has really, really bad timing. It's also depressingly basic: launch a car at caravans and try to skip it across them like a car on a lake, using various gadgets to blow up more stuff and extend your run. Insanely expensive in-app purchases are included, but Jeremy Clarkson is not.

G.I. Joe: Strike

G.I. Joe: Strike is a game about the famous group of mercenaries forming a union and refusing to fight Cobra until they're given medical benefits, full dental coverage, a yearly cost of living adjustment, and company allowances for ridiculous costumes. Just kidding, that's something I might actually want to play. In reality Strike is a crappy one-button "fighter" with $100 in-app purchases. Now you know... and no, I'm not going to finish that lame catchphrase.

Pokémon Jukebox

This is an app that lets you listen to the game music from the dozens of versions of Pokemon that have been released over the years. It's also terrible in just about every way. The interface should please fans, but a tiny selection of rotating songs and huge in-app purchases for the rest of them make it a poor proposition even for Poke-addicts. If you're really into game music, check Amazon for the various import CDs - you'll still come out ahead on price.

--

Listen to music from Pokémon games for free. Pokémon Jukebox allows you to listen to 3 songs as much as you want each day for free. It's also possible to purchase a song you like right then and there. You can only listen to music purchased inside this app in the app. You can also enjoy medleys of songs selected around a theme. From old favorites to the newest songs.

You might remember Exiles as Crescent Moon's ambitious single-player shooter with a sweeping story and huge environments. Or then again you might not, since the original game has only been downloaded a few thousand times. This version takes away the $7 price tag and adds advertising instead.

SHIELD Exclusives

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Android Police coverage: Half-Life 2: Episode 2 Comes To SHIELD, Along With A Handful Of Other Killer New Games

At this point the only game in Valve's iconic Half-Life series that hasn't been ported to one SHIELD or another is the original. The latest is the second piece of episodic content to come after Half-Life 2, and incidentally also the last Half-Life game released on the PC. Eight years ago. Yeah, keep waiting, fans. Anyway, $8 for the latest release isn't bad at all, but unfortunately SHIELD Tablet and SHIELD Portable owners aren't invited to the party.

--

Half-Life® 2: Episode Two is the second game created by Valve that extends the award-winning and best-selling Half-Life® adventure. As Dr. Gordon Freeman, you were last seen exiting City 17 with Alyx Vance as the Citadel erupted amidst a storm of unknown proportions. In Episode Two, you must battle and race against Combine forces as you traverse the White Forest to deliver a crucial information packet stolen from the Citadel to an enclave of fellow resistance scientists.

Never Alone Kisima Ingitchuna

Android Police coverage: Half-Life 2: Episode 2 Comes To SHIELD, Along With A Handful Of Other Killer New Games

Never Alone is, broadly speaking, a platformer. But that's selling the experience far short: it's an impressive surreal tale about a n Inuit girl and her snow fox companion, with visuals and atmosphere that rival the most serious of CG animated movies. Combined with some innovative puzzles and a two-player co-op mode, Never Alone is a game that belongs on your SHIELD... if you can stomach the $15 asking price. That's the same price as the PC version.

Join Nuna and Fox as they search for the source of an eternal blizzard that threatens the survival of everything they have ever known. Funk of Titans is a SHIELD TV-exclusive platformer starring the funkalicious Perseus as he tries to beat his way through a disco-fied version of ancient Greece beating down the demons of rap and pop. BRAWL

Android Police coverage: BRAWL Brings A Twisted 'Adults Only' Take On Bomberman To The SHIELD Tablet And SHIELD Android TV

Bomberman + Twisted Metal = BRAWL. This "Adults Only" game - the first that we've seen on the Play Store - uses familiar Bomberman stage design and multiplayer battles with creepy characters and slasher flick violence. It's an interesting take, though the atmosphere and visual design don't really seem to affect gameplay. There's plenty of that: BRAWL includes a single-player story campaign and a four-way local multiplayer mode with a ton of game types.

--

Are you ready to face your darkest fears... with a bomb in your hand? Step into the darkness of The Emporium with 8 unique characters, each with a rich backstory and a surprising plot-twist. Beatbuddy

Beatbuddy is a floating platformer with music forming a core portion of its appeal. Enemies and parts of the stage blend into and contribute to the background music - it's sort of like a playable version of a chiptune remix. That said, while the hand-drawn visuals and the sound design are impressive, the gameplay itself isn't all that interesting. It's also not clear why this game needs to be a SHIELD exclusive - the visuals and controls would work fine on any high-end Android device.

--

The best-selling PC game is now available on the SHIELD Hub. Play Beatbuddy on the NVIDIA SHIELD with fantastic graphics and sound. Beatbuddy is an action-adventure where players solve puzzles and vanquish enemies in six beautiful hand-drawn worlds, each with their own amazing soundtrack composed by industry legends such as Austin Wintory, Parov Stelar, chiptune-genius Sabrepulse, the La Rochelle Band -- and more. WTF Game(s) Of The Week

Burn Your Fat With Me! FG

This is a combination of the super-popular anime dating sim genre (well, super-popular in Japan, anyway) and... an exercise app for women. "Burn Your Fat With Me" features male love interests that are disturbingly effeminate. They basically double as animated fitness coaches, and surprisingly the game also includes a fitness tracker. If you prefer your exercise with overtones of cartoon sex, this is the game for you.

--

The revolutionary fusion of otome game + fitness app that's hugely popular in Japan is finally making its English-language debut. Burn Your Fat With Me for Girls is the first ever romance adventure fitness app intended for girls. The app has a cast of popular Japanese voice actors, plus actors living in America, for a huge volume of vocal recordings with about 1,000 words.!
