Crossy Road

Android Police coverage: Popular Frogger Clone 'Crossy Road' Hops From iOS And The Amazon Appstore Onto Google Play

Crossy Road is Frogger. Sure, it's got charming "voxel" graphics and a bunch of different (and soon to be endangered) player-characters, but it's Frogger. Only and ever Frogger. The sole point of the game is to gain coins, which you can use to randomly earn more characters, some of which will change the environment to a local theme. If the slow coin collection gets you down you can watch ads to earn more, or just buy those characters for a buck each. (For your skinned game of Frogger.)

Why did the Chicken cross the road? Why did the Pigeon leave THAT there? Why did Specimen 115 abduct that cow? Why did Unihorse eat all that candy?

  • Collect over 50 retro-styled, pop art inspired characters
  • Cross roads, train tracks, and rivers – endlessly hop forever
  • Dodge traffic in a candy wonderland with the Android Robot
  • Simple, pure, innovative gameplay
  • Free to play

Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders

Android Police coverage: Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders Takes To The Air On Android

Most of the flight simulator games on mobile platforms have extremely simple controls, more or less out of necessity. Sky Gamblers is a WWII dogfighting game that tries to buck that trend with multiple options for semi-realistic controls, even going so far as to include a cockpit view. Real planes and historic battles are present for history buffs, and players can hop online for co-op or competitive missions. The game is $1, plus in-app purchases for specific planes and cosmetic options - no currency or "cheats" allowed.

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE WWII AIR COMBAT GAME. You’ll participate in visceral dogfights, protect cities and fleets, bomb enemy structures and even fly through tunnels. Everything is set up in accurately recreated real life locations like Pearl Harbor, Coast of Dover, Midway, Germany and France. Unparalleled visuals, special effects and audio including: specular masks, bump mapping, atmospheric scattering, volumetric clouds with realistic lighting.

Adventure Time Game Wizard

Android Police coverage: Cartoon Network's 'Adventure Time Game Wizard' Is A $4.99 Level Creator For Fans Of Finn And Jake

This is a pretty sweet idea: a game that's nothing but a level creator. OK, that's not all that novel, but the ability to use a rudimentary Adventure Time-themed programming language is quite cool (and a possible vector to get kids excited about computer science). If that doesn't work, you can draw out levels on a piece of paper and import them via the camera. Groovy. Adventure Time Game Wizard is $5 with no in-app purchases - all the tools and capabilities are included.

Game Wizard gives you the power to make and play Adventure Time games. Finn and Jake face an all-new villain: Doodle Wizard. Battle his sketchy army across a huge open world including the Grasslands, Candy Kingdom, Ice Kingdom, Dungeons, and more. Play for hours in Adventure Mode, or make your own adventures. Use the Doodle Wizard’s secret glyph language to design custom video games. Fill your games with traps, loot, portals, enemies, and so much more.

Flockers

Android Police coverage: Flockers Is A Lemmings-Style Puzzle Game From The Creators Of Worms, Now Available On Google Play

Flockers looks a lot like Lemmings, and it uses the same basic formula: you guide a bunch of helpless sheep through a series of obstacles to get them safely through the levels. But this game comes from Team 17, the Worms guys, and it has their typically twisted sense of humor. One of the Worms actually guest stars as a mad genius type who'll stop at nothing to drop, crush, slice, stab, and generally dispatch all those sheep in hilariously violent ways. IAP lets you skip levels, but isn't used for anything else.

New from the creators of Worms, comes Flockers, a game splattered full of dark humour. Sick of being used as Weapons in the Worms' endless battles, the Sheep decide to make a break for it. Save the Sheep by guiding them through crushers, giant buzz-saws, deep pits full of spikes and giant swinging meat cleavers. Help them escape their diabolical masters, or leave them to the Worms' diabolical traps and watch their insides explode all over the place. Like, everywhere.

Gunslugs 2

Android Police coverage: OrangePixel's Gunslugs 2 Supplies More 8-Bit Inspired, Gun-Totin', Nostalgia-Infused Platforming For $3.15

OrangePixel really knows how to do two things: platforming and gratuitous shooting. OK, three things: throw in pixelated graphics and characters with huge heads as well. Gunslugs 2 features all of the running and gunning action of the original with a significant graphical update, including enormous vehicles and stages set on high-speed backgrounds. The game is certifiably insane, so it's a good thing that the developer's tight control setup remains intact.

A world under attack by tanks, spiders, bombs, rockets, aliens and more, needs a hero, you are that hero. are you ready to join the Gunslugs ? If you like over the top action, chaos, explosions, weirdness and don’t take it all too serious, then you know exactly what Gunslugs is all about. A combination of fast run and gun gameplay mixed with elements of all our favorite movies and other pop-art from the 90s and 80s.

Gunbrick

Android Police coverage: Gunbrick Offers A Unique Combination Of Platforming And Puzzles (Also Guns And Bricks)

A Gunbrick is a brick with a gun in it. In case that wasn't obvious. It's piloted by a duck wearing glasses, who (I assume) moves it around by wiggling like a kid in a cardboard box. This is a mix between platforming and puzzling, with the odd "one side at a time" movement expanded by alternately blasting things with the gun or using it to move around. The simple levels are interspersed with enormous boss battles.

In a future where cars are obsolete, the Gunbrick has become a worldwide sensation. The Gunbrick - A gun one side... a shield on the other. Encounter wasteland mutants, crazed nerds, law enforcement and all manner of cube based adversaries. Roll your way through this action packed puzzle platformer.

• A Jam packed world set over three unique locations full of platform puzzling action.

• Epic Boss fights, including a thrilling chainsaw death match.

• Music by Eirik Suhrke (Creator of Ridiculous Fishing & Super Crate box)

WWE Immortals

Android Police coverage: Pro Wrestlers Pretend To Be Superheroes In The Free-To-Play Fighter WWE Immortals

What would it look like if WWE wrestlers pretended to be superheroes? Probably a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Shazam movie, but I digress. WWE Immortals is basically a remake of the popular Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game, but this time featuring a bunch of wrestlers with themed costumes and super attacks. The tap and swipe gameplay is intact, as is the online play and, regrettably, the freemium collect and upgrade model.

Take your favorite WWE Superstars out of the ring and into the supernatural world of WWE IMMORTALS. Wield DEVASTATING POWERS to demolish opponents with innovative touch-based combat from the makers of Injustice and Mortal Kombat. SUPERCHARGE YOUR ROSTER with spectacular signature moves, gear and support cards. Bring the pain during live BONE-CRUNCHING BATTLES tied to WWE events.

LEGO® BIONICLE®

Android Police coverage: LEGO Brings Its BIONICLE Line To The Play Store As A Free Game With No In-App Purchases

I have fond memories of the original LEGO Bionicle toys, a sort of cross between conventional building bricks and stylized action figures. The company has been producing them for the better part of 15 years, and they're due for a re-launch right about now. This simple action-adventure game serves as a freebie ad for the new toy line, but it also fleshes out the elemental story and mythology behind the masked heroes. Like most LEGO games, Bionicle has no ads (well, aside from the game itself) or in-app purchases.

The epic legend of LEGO® BIONICLE® is back. In the hunt for the ancient and powerful Mask of Creation, our six heroes Tahu, Kopaka, Onua, Gali, Pohatu and Lewa must fight to recover the lost masks of power to stop the rising evil on the mythical island of Okoto.

• Build and battle as the six heroes: Tahu - Master of Fire, Kopaka - Master of Ice, Onua - Master of Earth, Gali - Master of Water, Pohatu - Master of Stone or Lewa - Master of Jungle

• Dominate the battlefield with the heroes’ special moves

• Quest for the long lost Masks of Power in six elemental regions

• Collect more than 100 customizable pieces on your journey to the Masks of Power

• 74 arenas in all the regions of Okoto

LEGO® ULTRA AGENTS Antimatter

Android Police coverage: LEGO's Ultra Agents Adventure Game Gets A Sequel Called 'Antimatter' - Still Free With No IAP

We're overflowing with LEGO games this week. Ultra Agents is one of the company's less-known original properties, presenting a kid-friendly version of James Bond. This second entry in the game series is essentially a point-and-click adventure with a few mini-games and LEGO's typical building segments thrown in. As with most LEGO games, it has no in-app purchases - great for kids, so long as you don't want to be pestered with requests for building sets.

This time, the Ultra Agents are under attack. ULTRA AGENT – we thought we had defeated the Super Villains menacing Astor City, but they were just a distraction from the real threat behind them: ANTIMATTER. He will stop at nothing until he has turned every good citizen bad. ANTIMATTER’s powerful weapons and henchmen are like nothing we tackled before. The stakes are the highest they have ever been, AGENT: we are giving you access to every new technology we have.

Spoiler Alert

Android Police coverage: New Platformer Spoiler Alert Makes You Play The Game Entirely In Reverse

What happens when you play a Mario-style platforming game... in reverse? Not much, actually. Spoiler Alert's premise is interesting: you run backwards through the entire game, un-killing bad guys and putting coins back in their places. While this is certainly novel, the game never really takes advantage of the idea. It's essentially all about perfect timing and placement, since there's a time paradox if you accidentally kill something you didn't on the "first" time through.

When you pick up this game, it has already been beaten. The big bad boss is defeated, the coins are collected and the princess has been rescued. Why, oh why? Unraveling this mystery takes you through the entire game, from the last level to the first. You must uncollect the coins, revive the enemies and avoid nasty time paradoxes. In other words, you must uncomplete the game by playing it backwards.

N.O.V.A. 3: Freedom Edition

Android Police coverage: Gameloft Releases N.O.V.A. 3 Freedom Edition, A Free Version Of N.O.V.A. 3 With Ads And No In-App Purchases

Freedom is the American way! Not freedom in the sense of free beer, though - that's actually quite anti-American. But shooting enormous guns and blowing stuff up with questionable justification is very American, so all of my fellow Americans (and maybe some other people too) can rejoice in this new Freedom Edition of N.O.V.A. 3, Gameloft's Halo clone. It's free as in beer, with an extra helping of advertising, which is possibly the most American thing in the world. Thankfully there are no in-app purchases, American as they may or may not be.

The most immersive and impressive sci-fi FPS franchise on smartphones is now completely free. Fight for humankind's survival. Four months after Kal Wardin defeated the Volterites, President Folsom is assassinated and the beleaguered colonies surrender to the Volterite Protectorate. Since then, Kal has been lying low, but a desperate plea from Yelena calls him back to save Earth and humankind…

Biz Builder Delux

So the latest EA iteration of SimCity isn't to your taste. Why not grab the new Kairosoft game? This Japanese developer has been making consistently excellent titles that incorporate the soul of the "manager" genre from the 90s, and Biz Builder might be its most ambitious one yet. This one puts you in the shoes of a small business manager, but unlike previous Kairosoft games, you can run multiple businesses once you build up enough capital. Biz Builder Deluxe has no ads or in-app purchases.

Ah, there's nothing like the rhythmic bustle of a burgeoning business burg... especially when you're the one building it. That's right, from a video game store to the corner fast food joint, run what YOU want as the town's entrepreneur extraordinaire. Once your coffers are comfortably padded, you'll be ready to set sights on other ripe markets. Don't be shy and branch out, erecting a diverse variety of establishments to inspire both pep in the town plaza and plenitude in your pockets.

2-bit Cowboy

This game is neither "two bit" in the sense of extremely simple computer graphics, nor "two-bit" in the sense of being cheap or unworthy. It is the latest title from Crescent Moon, graduating from its debut in the Humble Bundle. 2-Bit Cowboy is a typically simple platformer focused on traversing levels and fighting bad guys, with a little customization thrown in for good measure. The 2D black-and-white graphics are meant to emulate classic Game Boy titles, though the animation and definition are much better than that in reality.

There's a new sheriff in this 2-bit town: you. And you've got a lot of work to do. Tackle challenges, earn rewards, track down bad guys, and find hidden loot. Play as a cowboy or cowgirl, then customize your look with hats, bandanas, masks, and more. Explore huge levels. Gamble at casinos and drink at saloons. Ride a horse, tame a wild bull, and traverse underground mines in a minecart. Become a legend of the old West.

Strategy&Tactics:Medieval Wars

Herocraft's Strategy & Tactics series has won quite few fans thanks to its board game layout and solid turn-based strategy elements. The latest edition in the ever-expanding lineup brings the setting to medieval times, particularly in the more famous wars in Western Europe and the Crusades. All the features from the previous titles are there without too many new options, including quick matches, full campaigns, and "hot potato" single-device multiplayer.

The history of medieval Europe is rich in bloody wars and conflicts. The Norman invasion, the Crusades, the Hundred Years' War, the Reconquista, the Wars of the Roses, the Albigensian Crusade and endless peasant riots… A new game in the Strategy & Tactics series gives you an opportunity to try your strength in confrontations between the most ruthless conquerors. In Strategy & Tactics: Medieval Wars you are to lead the armies of England and France as well as the armies of crusaders in three campaigns and try to win the biggest wars and battles of European medieval history.

Spectrum

Spectrum is a platformer, at least in the broad sense of the genre - it might be more accurate to call it an "avoider" game. You control a little antimatter critter doing his (her? its?) best to avoid the various walls and obstacles in the levels. Since said walls move around, sometimes actively trying to crush you, that's more easily said than done. The game uses 3D graphics and 2D gameplay with options for touch or tilt controls, and there are no ads or in-app purchases.

FLOAT AND DODGE. Spectrum is a platform game set in an abstract world of stylized shapes and bright colors. Control a dark three-eyed entity attempting to reach portals while avoiding unforgiving obstacles and elements. Escape from 60 levels spread in 6 mysterious environments each with their own unique identities. Master gravity by acing exclusive endless jump and dive mechanics to make it to the end. Two control modes are available to suit every styles: tilt-based or touch-only controls.

SOL INVICTUS: The Gamebook

What's this? A gamebook adventure title that's not produced by Tin Man Games? Indeed, this sci-fi adventure uses its own system based more on choices and minigames than tabletop dice battles, but fans of the genre should enjoy it either way. It's also a little more active and, well, "video gamey" than most of the gamebooks we feature on Android Police. It has an interesting art style and a system with multiple save slots (because eventually you WILL die).

A POWERFUL SCI-FI STORY THAT YOU CONTROL. The second part of Kyle B. Stiff’s legendary adventure gamebook series has been brought to life as never before. Get ready for the ride of your life as you become the hero of your very own journey.

  • Multiple save slots: Play in up to three stories at once

Galaxy Trucker

Galaxy Trucker might not look the part, but it's actually a digital port of a well-known board game. The objective is to build the best ship out of various cards, mostly the detritus and junk of careless spacefaring civilizations, and battle it against either the colorful AI or human opponents. Turn-based multiplayer is available in an online mode or via a single device "hot potato" mode. It's pricey at $5 (like most board game apps) but there are no in-app purchases.

Galaxy Truckers Wanted. Can you build a space ship from sewer pipes? Are you willing to face meteors, pirates, and smugglers? Can you fly a five-engine ship after four engines have been destroyed? Then you are our kind of trucker. We offer good pay, a xenologically diverse crew, and a dynamic work environment. Bonuses paid for prompt delivery. Sign up to be a galaxy trucker today.

Bloodbones

Tin Man Games is another developer that has basically perfected its niche: Choose Your Own Adventure-style RPG gamebooks. The latest one is an adaptation of pen and paper gamebook Bloodbones, originally released in 2006. The story is a mix of Lovecraftian horror and sailing adventure, but as always, the outcome is up to you. Some of the included illustrations are full color, you can choose the difficulty, and the game engine lets you shake your phone to roll the dice and read horizontally on tablets.

Set off on a journey of revenge against the dread pirate Cinnabar, who killed your parents, and sail the high seas. The dreaded pirate-lord Cinnabar, scourge of the twelve seas, plagued the seafarers of the Old World in a bloody reign of terror until a brave adventurer put an end to his evil. But now he is back from the dead, seeking revenge, with the dark powers of voodoo at his command. A fantasy adventure from Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone in which YOU are the hero.

Specular

Specular looks like someone decided to port Geometry Wars to the Nintendo Virtual Boy. OK, perhaps that's not fair - this game isn't guaranteed to give you headaches, it just borrows the monochrome aesthetic for a little sci-fi fun. If you've played a twin-stick shooter you know what to expect, but Specular's gameplay is particularly smooth, and it includes an optional Facebook leaderboard. Not bad for a free student game with no in-app purchases.

Specular is a arcade twin stick shooter inspired by Waves, with swarming enemies, lots of insane power-ups, ridiculous combos, glowing graphics and pounding music. The game gives you a fast paced short term experience perfect for mobile gaming, pick up and play. Wield ludicrous fire-power, trigger colourful explosions on your screen and experience a both fun and beautiful game. This project has allowed us to learn about game design and production, and is a completely free must download with no ads.

Secret Files Sam Peters

This adventure-mystery title comes from Deep Silver, of Galaxy on Fire fame. Secret Files is an established franchise on the PC, and this is its second outing on Android. The titular heroine Sam Peters must unravel a mystery surrounding some sci-fi weirdness going on in the African jungle. Graphics are solid and the title is fully voice-acted, and it includes multiplayer co-op for certain locations - an interesting novelty for an adventure game.

When alien DNA is spotted in the genetic code of algae living at a crater site in Ghana, sassy reporter Sam Peters goes after the story of her lifetime. Before she can start her research at Lake Bosumtwi, however, she has to cleave through the wilderness and escape feisty jungle animals by day and demon-like creatures from African folklore by night. And soon she has to ask herself, whether a creditable article on the front page of an esteemed science magazine is really worth risking her life.

Air Control 2

Air traffic control games are surprisingly common on mobile platforms, but this one has some interesting twists, including landing planes on aircraft carriers and super-fast aircraft like the SR-71. There are also multiplayer maps with double airports meant for playing on a single tablet. That said, the basic flight line gameplay hasn't evolved in any noticeable fashion, and in-app purchases for collision alerts (which could just as easily be a core component of a $1-3 game) are not appreciated.

The long awaited sequel to the multi million download hit Air Control is finally here. In this simple yet surprisingly addictive game you take on the role of Air Traffic Controller. It is your job to direct airplanes to runways while avoiding collisions.

  • Worldwide locations: From scorching deserts to freezing mountains
  • Multiplayer coop maps: Play with your friend on the same tablet
  • Tons of different planes and choppers
  • World's fastest plane: The SR-71 Black Bird
  • Avoid blazing storms
  • Make snappy decisions when radio jam hits a plane

Infinite Warrior Battle Mage

Infinite Warrior Battle Mage, a title that cries out for a prosthetic colon, is a surprisingly unique take on tower defense. Incorporating turret shooter elements into a top-down style, it tasks players with defending just one tower against waves of enemies. The game gives you a limited number of spell slots, World of Warcraft-style, which you can upgrade or swap out as things get more difficult. Finally your special attacks call in huge and powerful units to wipe the battlefield clean. The game has cheat codes, and amazingly, you don't have to pay extra for them.

You are the Infinite Warrior Battle Mage, gifted with the power of ancient magics and trained in the art of sorcerous combat. As the first line of defense against the Tyrant King’s hordes, you and your brethren must repel the onslaught before it engulfs all of the Freelands. Your Watchtowers, magical structures long since abandoned during many ages of peace, amplify your abilities to levels rarely seen outside their walls: a simple spark can ignite into a meteor shower, a drip of water transmutes into a hailstorm.

Blaze and the Monster Machines

Blaze and the Monster Machines is Nickelodeon's answer to Cars. In this licensed game kids can race through a series of tracks allegedly learning some basic physics concepts at the same time thanks to some odd special items. There's also a mode that lets them build their own track out of pre-assembled components in a sort of digital Hot Wheels manner. The game has no in-app purchases (always good for kids), but it's pricey at $6.99 for just 15 levels.

Get ready to race along with Blaze and The Monster Machines, Nick Jr.’s newest show. It’s time to tear up the track with Blaze and his best friend AJ. The Blaze and the Monster Machines app introduces preschoolers to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts as they race along pre-set courses or build their own tracks. Each mode – race and build – encourages children to apply critical thinking skills and explore scientific principles, including acceleration, adhesion, force, traction and more.

Defenders of Suntoria

Defenders of Suntoria is essentially a tower defense game without the towers. You recruit fantasy characters that stand perfectly still while they attack, but which can be moved around to better accommodate the rushing hoards. (Oh, and there are some towers too, just to keep you confused.) Both this $2 version and the free version feature in-app purchases for currency, so I'm not sure what the point of a premium edition is.

Defend your kingdom from hordes of devilish goblins in this challenging tower defense game. Summon mighty forces and head into battle right now in the epic Defenders of Suntoria. Hurl back the enemy assault and save your Kingdom. Recruit invincible heroes, issue your orders and guide your warriors during battle. Upgrade and equip your mercenaries with the best weapons and thwart the invaders with ingenious traps. Make your diabolical enemies cut and run for their lives.

Big Win Football 2015

This is a pretty typical football game in the style of the pixelated classics from the 90s. Unlike a lot of alleged football games on mobile platforms, it uses full control for "real" matches. Unfortunately it also uses a card system for players and dual currencies for new cards and upgrades with, you guessed it, in-app purchases to refill your coffers. Prepare for online matches more one-sided than a Patriots-Jaguars game.

WTF Game(s) Of The Week

Football with Patrick Willis

See that Big Win football game right up there? This game is very much like that one, except every player is some linebacker named Patrick Willis, who's good enough to get his own mobile title but not good enough to get his team to the playoffs this year. This despite the fact that he can magically play both offense and defense. The obligatory in-game currency is called "Willis Bucks." Yeah, we basically included Football with Patrick Willis in this roundup for entertainment value... which is not to suggest that playing Football with Patrick Willis is in any way entertaining.

Feel the excitement with the fast-paced, 5-on-5 football arcade challenge featuring football’s most feared Linebacker Patrick Willis. NO playbook, NO flags, NO penalties, just pure action, power and skill as you mow down your opponents in the adrenaline-fuelled race to the BOWL. Bring on the PAIN with over-the-top hits and tackles, impossible plays made possible and much more, as you try to dominate the gridiron. Playing HARD gets you paid, son.
