There's an update to Hangouts Dialer rolling today to make those Google VoIP calls a little more useful. The dialer's new trick is that it can handle phone call intents from the system. That makes it easier than ever to place calls through Hangouts with your Google Voice number.
After this update, you'll be able to select Hangouts Dialer as the default app for phone calls. Simply tap a phone number in a browser, Maps, or any other app, and you'll get that familiar "Complete action" dialog. You can select manually each time, or set either Hangouts or the regular phone app as your default.
