There sure have been a lot of material updates lately, but this is not one of them. The new version of Flipboard is nothing to sneeze at, though. It brings a ton of new topics to follow, an updated look, and different ways to find interesting stories. There's even some special stuff to make the phone experience better.

Here's the changelog from Flipboard v3.

  • Over 30,000 new topics to follow, powered by best stories across publishers and 10 million+ Flipboard magazines.
  • Start your day with The Daily Edition, with articles selected by our team at 7 a.m.
  • Follow people to stay up-to-date on what they’re collecting into their magazines.
  • New design, everywhere.
  • Phones only: New top tab bar to quickly navigate between your Flipboard, everything you're following, search, notifications and your profile.

Perhaps you think that 30,000 number is an exaggeration? Probably not. It's a huge list of things. I searched for "troll" and got results for "patent trolls" and "trolling." Some seriously fine-grained control of interests here. The topic tags also pop up in some stories. The curated daily edition is neat for people who don't get a lot of content through social feeds. You can also follow users who are curating stories.

The new interface is still very much what you'd expect from Flipboard, but it's less thrown together. Buttons aren't strewn all over, and the top tab bar on phones makes navigation less awkward. If you didn't like Flipboard before, you're probably still not going to get it now, but for others it's a better experience.
