[appbrain_app name="Video Locker Pro" pname='com.handyapps.videolocker10' video='']

Today's roundup is sponsored by Handy Apps' newest addition to its privacy and security stable, Video Locker and Video Locker Pro.

The principle is the same as their Photo Locker apps featured in many of our previous roundups: protect the videos stored locally on your device with a PIN, and keep them away from prying eyes.

The protection goes beyond mere denial of access. Video Locker will not appear in your list of recent apps, and the Pro version has an option to hide it from your app drawer as well.

Should you choose to enable it, the only way to access Video Locker Pro will be via an inconspicuous calculator widget and your personal PIN code. Speaking of which, you can recover your PIN via email if you forget it in either version.

Other features include a tablet-friendly user interface, 128-bit AES encryption, bulk video hiding, and folder-level locking. The standard app is free, while Video Locker Pro is advertisement-free and hidden from your app drawer for a reasonable $2.99.

[appbrain_app name="Servers Ultimate" pname='com.icecoldapps.serversultimate' video='']

If you've got an Android phone or tablet that you're not using, there are a few options. Turn it into a media remote, or a dedicated e-reader, or a Google Music streaming box. But why aim so low, when an Android device is really nothing less than a tiny, full-featured computer? Servers Ultimate takes this to its logical extreme, running as a standard web, FTP, or media server over a Wi-Fi or mobile broadband connection.

--

Run your own free DLNA, DNS, Dynamic DNS, Email, FTP(S), Proxy, SMS Gateway, Time, HTTP(S) and/or (secure) WebDAV server (yes, 10 different servers). From one all-including app: Servers Ultimate. You can even run multiple instances of the same server type at the same time for most. We can’t list all the features because of the limited amount of text, so below you can find a summary of most of the features. In this version you can only add a maximum of two servers, and if supported by a server: three users, three allowed IP's, three rules, three roots. If you want to be able to add unlimited items, see no advertisement and support development, please buy Servers Ultimate Pro.

  • Features:
  • Add a Dynamic DNS Updater using the local or public IP of your device
  • Start/Stop servers automatically when connected/disconnected from a specified WIFI network, or on boot, or directly when the app starts
  • Set a custom name and port per server
  • No rooted device is needed
  • Set a WIFI lock, keep the device alive and/or keep the device fully awake (including the screen)
  • Optionally save all the server data to the sdcard to prevent removal during upgrades
  • View all IP addresses of your device, including the public IP
  • Automatically email and clear the log when the maximum amount is reached
  • Verbose log (filter, email, etc)

Android Police coverage: Dolphin Browser Beta Hits The Play Store, Boasts Major HTML5 Rendering Speed Improvements

If you're a long-time Android user, you know Dolphin. The creators insist that their latest beta is the best ever, and we tend to agree with them. With Chrome and the standard Android browser better than ever, they've got plenty of competition, but a much-tweaked HTML 5 engine should make current users happy while gaining a fair amount of new converts.

--

Dolphin Browser Beta (with Dolphin Engine) is an improved webkit version with extensive canvas enhancement and behind-the-scenes technology that makes it our fastest Dolphin yet.

How fast? Dolphin Browser Beta's HTML-5 rendering is:

• 5 - 10X faster than the default Android browser

• 100% faster than Chrome (at times)

• Initially scored over 450 when tested on HTML5test.com. (HTML5test.com is an industry respected tool for testing a browser’s support of HTML5)

With a score of over 450, the highest tested, Dolphin has:

• Full support for Web Worker

• Full support for Web Socket

• Full support for Web Audio

• Support of Camera real-time video display

• Support of Web Notification

• Support of Web GL

• Support of Web application customization

Android Police coverage: Wi-Fi Shoot (Beta) Lets Users Share Photos And Videos Via Wi-Fi Direct

WiFi Shoot is more of a concept app at this point, showing off the capabilities of the Wi-Fi Direct standard by "shooting" photos from one Android 4.0+ device to another. (Ah, brings back memories of "beaming" on my old Palm M100.) Currently it's pretty buggy, with compatibility issues on the Galaxy Nexus and some Asus tablets.

--

WiFi Shoot it is the first (and only to the moment) app in the Google Play to use the WiFi Direct technology to wireless transmit photos and videos directly from device to device. WiFi Shoot uses the default built-in Android WiFi Direct API. WiFi direct was first introduce in Ice Cream Sandwich but it's not a requirement for a Ice Cream Sandwich device to be certified by Google to operate with the Google Play (meaning, a device can be ICS without WiFi Direct).

Android Police coverage: Splashtop 2 HD Arrives In The Play Store, Is Free For A Limited Time

Splashtop is arguably the best remote access app on Android, and the 2.0 version seems to improve on speed, stability, and security. Right now the app is free, but it will cost $10 at some indeterminate time in the future. Android Police coverage: Tasker Updated To Add Support For 'AutoRemote', An Insanely Powerful Remote Control Utility

Tasker is well-known among the more dedicated and technical members of the Android modding community. AutoRemote is a separate app that adds the ability to perform any of the tens of thousands of actions available in Tasker through a remote website, from any device... even another Android phone.

Here's a more advanced example of a task:

Let your wife send you a spoken shopping list when you get off work:

You can use AutoRemote with other Tasker conditions, such as the Date and Time conditions. Create a "shop=:=" command and combine it with a 5PM condition. Then, share your personal AutoRemote URL with your wife and have her send stuff she needs you to buy like "shop=:=carrots and ice cream". Then, at 5PM your phone could say that list out loud: "You need to go shopping! You need to buy carrots and ice cream"

For those already obsessed with Tasker, this one's indispensible.

--

With AutoRemote you have full control of your phone, from wherever you are by sending push notifications to your phone and reacting to them in Tasker.

(WARNING: TASKER IS AN ANDROID APP THAT AUTOMATES TASKS ON YOUR PHONE. THIS APP ONLY WORKS WITH TASKER INSTALLED)

This is how it works:

Step 1: Open AutoRemote on your phone and see what your personal URL is.

Step 2: Navigate to that URL on any browser (on your phone, PC, mac, TV, anywhere...)

Step 3: go to Tasker, add a new profile and set up a message filter. Assign that state to a Task of your choosing.

Step 4: On your personal page, input a message and hit "Send".

The task you configured in Tasker should now be executed. If it hasn't, check the logs in AutoRemote to see if anything went wrong.

To start out, check the Quickstart here.

[appbrain_app name="Toon Goggles for Sony Tablet" pname='com.toongoggles.b' video='']

Every tech-savvy parent knows that gadgets make great (if expensive, fragile, and incredibly irresponsible) babysitters. It might not be a good idea to throw your Tablet S to your 4-year-old and tell them to go wild on Netflix, where they can find Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds. Toon Goggles is Netflix, for barely-licensed cartoons, for Sony tablets. For free. Hey, one out of four ain't bad.

--

[appbrain_app name="F-Stop Media Gallery" pname='com.fstop.photo' video='']

Most viewer apps focus on photos or videos. F-Stop goes beyond this, viewing and organizing every possible file format, complete with thumbnails and metadata. The latter is important, since filtering by obscure tags like Album, Date Taken, and rating is a neat trick that should help those with large collections. The interface shifts for tablets, something that's all too uncommon.

--

Browse, organize and password protect your media. Finally. One application that lets you Quickly Browse, Easily Organize, and Safely Protect all of your photos and videos on your Android™ phone or tablet for FREE. F-Stop Media Gallery allows you to browse your media by folder, album, tag, rating, protection status, viewing frequency, and more. Thumbnails display instantaneously no matter how you choose to view your images and videos. Organizing your media becomes effortless when using the Albums feature. Create your own Albums by selecting the media you want to add or use the Smart Albums feature. [appbrain_app name="Impressionist Fingerpaint" pname='com.superfiretruck.impressionistfingerpaint' video='']

The filters in Instagram leave a lot to be desired, not the least of which is taste. If you're looking for something a little more classical in your "artistic" photos of that incredible cheese Danish, try Impressionist Fingerpaint. It won't make you the next Van Goh or Mucha, but it will add some interesting effects to your snapshots.

--

Turn any photo into an impressionist masterpiece. Impressionist Fingerpaint is an interactive painting application that lets you transform any photo into a work of art. Use different painterly brush styles to recreate your photo as if it were done in pencil, pastel, or paint. We've optimized the fingerpainting experience for tablet devices, but we've tested it on older, smaller phones, too. The two-finger pan and zoom controls allowing you to focus on the fine details or make extra-broad strokes across the entire image. The brush strokes are speed-sensitive, giving you exceptional expressive power.

--

Florian is a new type of a diary. Why is it different? Each activity is represented by a colorful pictogram, which makes their selection much more comfortable and effective. Imagine all your activities – swimming, biking or going to the cinema. Would you put them down in your diary? There is no need to. Simply select an appropriate icon and save it with only one tap or add a note.

[appbrain_app name="Bangstyle" pname='com.Bangstyle.Main' video='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8RmichGCdI']

Bangstyle is an app that shows off hairstyles. As someone who's worn a comb-over since he was six, that's about all that I can confidently say. Presumably it includes bangs, which may or may not be in style. Mention is made of photos shared in a social capacity. Make of it what you will - maybe you or your significant other will figure out the next do by perusing the app or the site.

--

Can you imagine in this day and age that we all still rifle thru magazines ripping out hairstyle photos and jamming them into our pockets? Sheesh. There's gotta be a better way. We're not saying that we're geniuses for solving that problem with the awesome new Bangstyle Hair app but others sure are some of them unpaid. Hair stylists can shoot and share the latest from their own chairs. Users can browse recently posted articles, instantly upload hair pictures and locate the nearest hair salon at their fingertips. The interactive element allows hair stylists to immediately share and store their work, creating instant "living" portfolios for users to explore in real time.
