Fossil announced Q Wander and Q Marshal Android Wear watches way back in March, but neglected to provide basic details like release date or price. I'd almost given up hope they'd actually come out, but now the date has been set—both watches go on sale August 29th, but you can pre-order them this Friday.
One of the reasons the Samsung Gear S2 was quite so interesting was its primary input method. Similar to the Apple Watch's 'crown' button, the bezel around the watch's screen could be used to navigate menus and perform other functions. Even now, it's one of the best input methods I've seen on a smartwatch. But if a research project from the University of St Andrews holds practical promise, similar interactions - really, even more powerful ones - could be implemented on Android Wear, and without any new hardware.
WatchMI is a new technology being developed by computer scientists at St Andrews. The WatchMI software hooks into the smartwatch's accelerometer, gyro, and magnetometer sensors to detect pressure and twisting motions.
For the past two years, Samsung has unveiled its Tizen-powered Gear smartwatches at IFA Berlin; the Gear S was shown off for the first time at IFA 2014, and the Gear S2 and S2 Classic were released at IFA 2015. Judging from the watch hands on the press invite the company sent us, it intends to continue this trend.
We caught wind of an FCC filing for the ZenWatch 3 the other day with an interesting quirk—the label was round. That would imply a round watch, but the device was being kept confidential. The Chinese version of the FCC, known as TENAA, was not as careful and has leaked images of the ZenWatch 3 in all its round, grainy glory.
Samsung Pay has been available for almost a year, but it's only worked on Samsung's phones. Now, the company is looking at expanding Pay to its line of Gear watches. Anyone in the US with a Samsung phone and a Gear S2 can give Samsung Pay a shot, but it's not as robust as the phone version.
As we reported last week, Google is in the process of building two Android Wear smartwatches. At the time, we were unable to show you the watches themselves. Today, that changes - what you see in the image above could be codename and "Swordfish" and "Angelfish," Google's two Assistant-enabled wearables that we believe will be released after the new Nexus phones.
Disclaimer: No matter the confidence level, there's always a chance product updates, features, and some or all details will be changed or cancelled altogether.
It's coming up on a year old at this point, but the Huawei Watch is still considered by many to be the best Android Wear device you can get. The pricing has always been high, but sales are happening more often lately. Right now, you can get the stainless steel band version for $269.99 from Daily Steals.
If you've been holding off on Android Wear in anticipation of a good deal, this might be it. The Huawei Watch is on sale again, and some of the discounts on the more spendy versions are as much as $200. The deals are live on the Google Store, Amazon, Best Buy, and more.
Samsung is whipping its accessory offerings into shape today with two new fitness-oriented products. The Gear Fit2 is about what you'd expect, a followup to the original Gear Fit smart sports band. The Gear IconX is something new from Samsung. It's a pair of completely wireless earbuds that include some standalone fitness tracking features. If this sounds familiar, that's because both products leaked in April.
There are many opinions about wearable technology, but most criticisms focus on the awkwardness – or just plain unattractiveness – of many products that have come thus far. One of the more interesting presentations from I/O 2015 came during the ATAP session, in which Project Jacquard was introduced. This is a touch-sensitive fabric that can be woven into regular clothing and used a bit like a trackpad. This technology is being put to real use, and in a partnership with Levi Strauss, the first product using Jacquard will be launching next Spring.
Levi's is calling it the Commuter Trucker Jacket, a denim jacket with Jacquard woven into the left sleeve.
